"Dolores Mary Eileen O'Riordan (6 September 1971 – 15 January 2018) was an Irish singer, songwriter, and musician. She was the lead vocalist and lyricist of alternative rock band The Cranberries. One of the most recognizable voices in rock in the 1990s, she was known for her lilting mezzo-soprano voice, signature yodel, emphasized use of keening, and strong Limerick accent." Wikipedia

I am receiving to my new dark fiction journal on Medium: A Dark Wood. I have turned away a few but enjoy finding writers who have talent and who are willing to work with picky ole me when it comes to their stories. 🖤 If you are a dark fiction writer and are a Medium member or would like to join, consider A Dark Wood. When you are accepted to become a writer for a journal, you may submit more than once to that journal.

I love when the public bathroom toliet is in a fully enclosed little room, so no one can look at my feet or peak through the cracks. Stay away you bathroom voyeurs!

MargaretSefton,
@MargaretSefton@writing.exchange avatar

@RickiTarr A Buc'ee's bathroom is not an entirely enclosed room, but close enough for me. I love it. Nice and large and always clean. I was just in the Buc'ee's north of Daytona a couple of days ago. If you need a bathroom while on the road, plan your breaks accordingly. 💜

MargaretSefton,
@MargaretSefton@writing.exchange avatar

@RickiTarr When my sister and I recently went to Buc'ee's and picked up a brisket taco for my Dad who is in SC, I told my sister I must have a Buc'ee's tchotchke. I am jealous of your stuffed Buc'ee but will work hard to rectify the situation. ❤️ A picture will be forthcoming.

I've learned from experience that death and tragedy do not change the dynamics of a family system entrenched in narcissism and conservative religious beliefs. As much as I want the Hallmark movie ending, I do not hold illusions. Sometimes I think Hollywood does us no favors. Then again, we have darker literature and movies which deal with certain realities often swept away by those in a triumphant religion. It feels good to have access to cultural product that is more realistic.

What kind of high-school experience did you have? Were you in a clique? Were you popular, unpopular, the coolest kid in your Homeschool? Did you have a sweet jean jacket with patches, or maybe a leather vest? Were you an evil villain or a Mary Sue?

MargaretSefton,
@MargaretSefton@writing.exchange avatar

@RickiTarr I did achievement-oriented things, and ergo was not popular. Most of the popular kids partied all day during school and one had an affair with her teacher. Sometimes teachers toked it up with students. I was clueless about these things, a goody two shoes, trying to please my impossible to please parents. It was lonely, but I did have a small set of friends. We did things together, which was nice. I wouldn't go back for anything.

What do I do when I'm depressed? I write my about aliens and disaffected seminarians, and I post a picture of the fountain down my breezeway upon which I based a story recently submitted. A woman becomes convinced the fountain is her father ordering her to do something terrible. I describe the fountain in such lurid detail and yesterday, I noticed how unimpressive it is. But the imagination rules. 😂 I did try to add a filter that helps it look sinister. lols.

My father emailed and said things have gotten so bad with my Mom's Alzheimer's, they're taking her off of some meds that are not helping her improve. He along with the retirement community staff will be moving her into a full-time nursing facility. I think things went down so much quicker than anyone anticipated. I'm so glad my sister and I went up for a visit when we did a few weeks ago. That will have been the last time to be with her in any meaningful way. Many feelings about all this. 💜

MargaretSefton,
@MargaretSefton@writing.exchange avatar

@wordsmith That is an excellent point. Thank you. My father feels he has "failed" in some way, but my sister and I are campaigning hard that he has done everything humanly possible. I'm sure it's just a wrenching thing to go through as a spouse. Thank you for your kind words.

MargaretSefton,
@MargaretSefton@writing.exchange avatar

@purplepadma @wordsmith That is a good question. He does live in a social community where retirees come together for meals and other events. And luckily, he is a social butterfly. Though there will be a period of adjustment for him. The two of them have been together for over fifty years. And she was pretty much the organizer on the home front. So, I know it's been hard on him. Thank you for asking. We will be going up there again in a couple of weeks. I'm so grateful there is a hands-on staff.

Up late at night, hoping sleep will call for me. I suggested edits on a story and am reading a book I purchased from Thrift Books. I read Alice McDermott's Charming Billy for a book club moons ago and loved it. Now I am reading her book The Ninth Hour.

Every time I tell myself, "Ok, today is the last day I'll post to Medium for a while," I later find myself posting to Medium. A motivator is having started a dark fiction publication. I'm working to find contributors while posting example stories of my own. Cheers, everyone. If you know of someone who publishes dark fiction, please send them my way. 🖤 https://medium.com/a-dark-wood/unease-in-muck-city-a-story-and-an-invitation-05b7f163114c?source=friends_link&sk=838ee2eda25aef566991805813a1dc56

There are many popular Gillian Welch songs to choose from, but I love this one from the "Lost Songs"---so quiet and winsome, closer to classic American country music than mainstream folk.

Your suffering is not unique to you, whatever you're going through someone else has to. Feelings of depression, loneliness, isolation, or just feeling different are universal.

If you feel like people aren't understanding or empathizing it's either because you are not telling them about the real you, or they are choosing not to treat you like a complicated feeling person.

MargaretSefton,
@MargaretSefton@writing.exchange avatar

@RickiTarr I think especially now, when the country and world is going through so much, it is good to remember that feelings of sadness, depression, loss, anger, ennui, etc, are very much shared. We're not special. But sometimes I wish there was a special person around to provide some answers, lols. However, in this case, there is no "store manager."
I also think it's easy to feel alone in our feelings because people put on masks for convenience-sake, or just to get through the day.

@Well_Worth_A_Read @KentuckyConjurer Yeah, I think so too. Very sad. All that time that father and daughter will never get back and at such a tender age in her life. Was the 2nd wife still in the picture at the time of the making of the documentary? I can't remember. I also think the father was probably crushed when he began to realize the full weight of things. He maybe was naive but I didn't pick up that he was narcissistic. He seemed to be open to the suggestion that what he did was awful.

MargaretSefton,
@MargaretSefton@writing.exchange avatar

@KentuckyConjurer @Well_Worth_A_Read Yes, that is a truly wonderful aspect of this story. To be believed and supported by someone who has been raised in the same family is huge.

MargaretSefton,
@MargaretSefton@writing.exchange avatar

@KentuckyConjurer @Well_Worth_A_Read What can make things more complicated is that an abusive parent will triangulate with children, thus isolating children from each other. To this day, my sister says to me, now that she's catching on, "Is this the kind of thing she says?" And I'm like, um yeah, the tip of the iceberg.

Jamaican Easter Traditions:

In the past, it was traditional to set egg white in a glass cup on Holy Thursday evening. On Good Friday morning, predictions would be made based on the pattern or shape of the egg white. For example, a ship meant travel.

We used to have a dogwood tree in our yard in South Carolina where my father had been a pastor. When I asked him about it a couple of weeks ago when my sister and I went to visit, he said the cross had been made of dogwood. Here's a little more about the legend, some of which he conveyed to us. I liked reading about Jamaican traditions. (One of my fave cakes to make was Hummingbird cake--Jamaican I believe?)
