Working with an editor is a great way to improve your writing, except for the part where they want to change your undeniably perfect sentences.

MargaretSefton,

@jamesthomson Editors have helped me, but sometimes I get a little worked up when it comes to a debate about content. Here's one about a short story set on the Florida NW coast: Did you put an Australian pine in this piece because you're submitted to an Australian journal? Me, containing my anger and the assumption that I am really that stupid and unprofessional: "No, these grow in Florida where the story is set." And, unable to help myself, I provide a link to substantiate my claim and choice.

This album really gives me chills every time I listen to it.

"The official audio of 'Precious Memories' by Aretha Franklin with James Cleveland and The Southern California Community Choir from the album 'Amazing Grace' (1972). 'Amazing Grace' earned Aretha a Grammy in 1973 for Best Soul Gospel Performance and remains the best-selling Gospel album of all time." YouTube description

As a woman, receiving the command/wish to smile, however gently phrased and well-intended, feels like an overwhelming burden. It also reminds me of performing for the family business---the ministry. So, let's just say, I don't want anyone messing with my resting face. lols.

"I want you to think about how you would react if another man asked you to smile, especially if you didn't want to. Besides, wouldn't you want a woman to smile at you because she wants to?"

A close up of the flowers described in the first picture.

A little mini drama has unfolded as I sit on the porch as night approaches. (Sorry about the low-quality photos, taken through a screen with a Trac phone in fading light.) A dove is feeling territorial about their spot in the palm "bark." Maybe they keep their food there, or maybe a nest, or maybe they're meeting their mate there later. (I frequently hear the call of a mourning dove and now I think I know the source.) A squirrel invades, the dove flies away in a huff, then returns. Repeat.

The dove pictured in the previous photo is flying to an adjacent palm tree.

Thank you, Issa Lopez for breathing new life into this series and making such a wonderful bridge between the old and new.

I'm so excited for what she'll create, the people she'll bring along with her, and for the opportunities this creates FOR her. 🖤

I'm gonna be honest y'all, it's felt dark lately, and for good reason, LGBTQ+ rights in the balance, an election coming up, women struggling to get basic Healthcare, mass shootings, SCOTUS, the environment. The list goes on and on, and the media twists everything to sound even worse, or just straight up ignores actual news. But here's the thing, I know a lot of you, and the fact that you exist in the world gives me hope. You care about the future and you want good things, and so do I, and as long as that spark is there, we have hope. So, let's focus on some good today! Share a good headline, some positive news either on a larger scale or just something personal, a nice picture you took, a funny meme or video, whatever made you feel good or at least, gave you a smile. Let's share some joy!

For a movie description to note that no one was killed in the making of the movie is a guarantee many people were hurt---Rollerball. And the first major Hollywood motion picture to credit its stuntmen. Also, a portrayal of corporate-controlled sports, cities, governments, and even libraries. A then-dystopian vision that is even closer to reality today. This cracked me up: An announcement before a Rollerball match---"Ladies and Gentleman, please rise for the playing of our Corporate hymn." Yikes

As an old lady, I have to remind myself that not everyone wants to talk to me. Some seem to welcome it and seem to relax, like the beleaguered parents in the Target line yesterday whose four-year-old girl wanted all the candy because it was her birthday as well as the tired cashier with the fantastic earrings. Some not so much? Or it just depends? A man and dog lover walking his dog before my porch: We greet each other frequently but maybe it's disconcerting when someone is behind a screen? lols

If you write, you need to read this. There's a lot here, but I am always a fool for a great metaphor, and here is one for that sense of stagnation one sometimes feels, but can better be understood as follows:
"I now think of this phenomenon as a slack tide, the space between high and low tides on the inland marshes, when the water ceases to move in either direction. It’s a momentary lapse in momentum, before it reverses and goes the other way..."

I love this book. It's the first time I've read anything by Ottesa Oshfegh. I'm 20 pages short of completion. It was a quick read though I did not like the first chapter and debated going on. Luckily, it got more descriptive, and the narrative voice became unique and interesting. The subject matter is on the darker or grittier side, but the narrative voice is relatable somehow. I don't know if I want to see the movie. I'd want it to live up to the book. 🖤
