An interesting article on the time line of the universe.

The Universe passed through many epochs, from free quarks and gluons to stable protons and neutrons to neutral atoms to stars, galaxies, planets, and more. The precise time at which these various epochs occurred, including the (current) dark energy-dominated era, can be pinpointed with precision. Here’s how we know.

Interesting. From the article:

"Chemistry’s image problem

By the age of six, many children already have negative feelings about the word “chemical”.

Ask the average person what a chemical is, and they’re likely to tell you it’s something bad. Products advertise themselves as “chemical-free” – an assertion that makes no scientific sense (since everything in the world is made of chemicals) but resonates with the consumer."

Despite promises of reform, exploitation remains endemic in India’s sandstone industry, with children doing dangerous work for low pay – often to decorate driveways and gardens thousands of miles away.

‘A declaration of war on the Ecuadorian state’
A live news broadcast on an Ecuadorian TV channel was interrupted by a group of masked men carrying guns, grenades, and dynamite. The broadcast continued for at least 15 minutes. Then the signal was cut off. The astonishing scenes in the city of Guayaquil were part of a series of audacious coordinated attacks by members of Ecuadorian gangs.

@pivic @bookstodon I am actually reading the P&V translation. I had heard this critique about their translation being too literal, thus making the English sound weird. Now I don’t know Russian, and I am not a native English speaker. So I cannot really give an informed opinion of their translation. However, I have read and enjoyed their translations of Crime and Punishment, The Brothers Karamazov, The Master And Margarita and more. I don't remember finding their English to be clunky or... 1/2

Narayoni,
@Narayoni@mastodon.social avatar

@pivic @bookstodon or weird sounding, or hard to understand. I have found that I prefer their translation over some others that I have tried. I think since I unfortunately can't read in the original language, I better read a translation that is at least accurate and also enjoyable. However, which English translation would you suggest?

Mort is a funny, heartwarming introduction to Death, one of the major Discworld characters. It starts off with Death deciding to take on an apprentice, Mort. Turns out, Death loves curry, has an adopted daughter, Ysabell, and gets REALLY UPSET and VERY ANGRY indeed when people harm or kill cats and kittens. And he rides a horse who is most adorably named Binky.
