Can anyone recommend the app for practice?
I'm at intermediate level with . Reading comprehension & speaking are ok, but I'm struggling when listening to others - it's like my ear/brain is not primed for it outside of certain scenarios, e.g. at the shops.
I tried an online intercambio yesterday but it was a bit too advanced for me & most of the others I can find on meetup.com where the times work for me are either beginner or advanced.

There seems to be a gap in the market for intermediate learners there.
I'm introverted so tire quickly with more than a few people & would ideally want to practice 1-on-1.
Alternatively an activity based online meetup would be good as I do better at events that aren't so focussed on speaking. E.g. I've a Stitch & Bitch in a couple of weeks that I'm looking forward to but they only meet once a month so a more regular online call would be helpful.

@maco Oh good idea! I've been listening to slow Spanish podcasts & starting to transition from watching films with subtitles to without (I'm way more confident in reading Spanish than hearing it so I tend to rely on the subs if available - audiobooks may help with that).
I do think my brain just shuts down a bit in IRL conversations (tbh that can happen in English too 🤷‍♀️) so I feel like I'm doing a lot of nodding along but not understanding. Getting over that blocker is a significant hurdle.

Was there a gas leak on Mastodon? 'Cause the replies I'm getting are extra trippy

So far I've been compared to a Chinese emperor and a loom smasher just for having the gall for suggesting that LLMs might end up being regulated like leaded petrol or asbestos.

(I.e. mostly banned for end users but allowed for specific uses with limitations. Pointing this out is repeating my point back to me, not countering it.)

@feorag @darkling @Menhit Our old vet refused to clip our cat's claws unless she (the cat) was unconscious. 🫤
You can imagine my delight when I found out she (again, the cat) would have to wear a harness for 12+ hours as part of moving country via a couple of flights. It took a few tries but we eventually found a harness she didn't immediately melt down over. But those jacket-style ones are a no-go for her - anything across her chest has her losing her absolute shit.

So far, when people have asked me what prompted me to move country, the (short) answer has been . But having come back for a week to deal with the final aspects of the move after a fortnight in our new home, I think a more accurate answer would be that I just don't want to be in the any more. The country's a bit shit & it's getting steadily worse. And I'm not the only one of my friends with good passports to hold that opinion & make plans to leave.

    Less than reassuring that is showing tomorrow's flights as an hour later than they actually are, presumably because their system hasn't been set up to handle DST/BST correctly. No indication on the site re what timezone they're displayed in & I wonder how many people will miss or be scrambling for their early morning flights as a result of this. And of course it filters through to a bunch of 3rd party sites that scrape from the airport departures data. 🙄

    The US forked British Monarchy™ in 1776, but froze the dev branch with Constitution 1.0, so didn't bother to backport any of the subsequent bugfixes and security patches (1831, 1918, 1938, etc.) from the main British branch.

    Anyway, you've got a bunch of British Monarchy™ users who instinctively want to tug the forelock but don't have anyone to tug it at and it upsets them because homebrew is no good—it takes 700 years of inbreeding to roll your own nobility.

    @cstross To be fair, some of us just grew up next to monarchies but are similarly fond of guillotines. That said, being on the wrong end of said monarchy's attempts at colonising every place they can get their grubby little mitts on does help with the guillotine appreciation.
