If the country you live in decides to exit the EU, then my advice (as an EU citizen who is realising she really should have left the UK as soon as the referendum was announced) is to run rather than walk.
The longer you leave it, the greater the pain will be. They won't know how their own processes are supposed to work & they won't have enough resources to figure them out because everyone useful will have already left or burned out.

For some reason, Wordpress weirdly forgot how to title posts clearly.

Instead of the opaque, milquetoast ”More Control Over the Content You Share”, which is really about opting out of sharing content with AI model trainers, why didn't Wordpress use titles like these?

  • Excluding your Content from AI Training
  • Opting Out from AI Training

Oh wait, this is a rhetorical question.

The choice of title is a signal and a sign of underlying intent.

@actuallyautistic The hardest part of my job as a manager is leading the team meeting each week. I'm really good with all of my employees one on one, but I am awkward and anxious when presenting to the whole group at once.

My team is fully remote, so the team meeting is over the phone. Everyone puts themselves on Mute so I can talk, which makes it worse because I don't hear any reactions, no laughs for my jokes, no nothing.

Every week after the meeting, I am pacing and muttering to myself about how bad I am (I work from home, so no one sees this). Hopefully my team thinks I have it together, but this meeting is just crushing for me.

If you need to request your medical records from via your GP's surgery, say in advance of moving to another non-UK country, you may want to do so a couple of months in advance. I tried today & was told it's currently a 6 week wait time & they require me to come in to collect the records in person. Can't provide them electronically & don't trust them to the mail.

I always think it's funny when right-wing types get mad at Star Wars for becoming "woke." They didn't notice the obvious fascist imagery? They didn't realize that they were the villains in this whole cinematic universe? So unobservant! I would never make that mistake! I'd know if I was the villain in a whole cinematic universe!

Anyway, I can't wait to watch the second installment of Dune! What'll happen next in Arrakis(Iraq)? Will the spice(oil) flow? Will Paul's Jihad topple the empire(us)?

To me, this dance that politicians are doing seems to be down to wanting to be on the right side of history. Or at least being perceived to be on it. But they're hedging their bets re what the right side actually is. Weak words to to stop massacring vs the actions of continuing to supply arms. The politicians can't have their cake & eat it too.

Great rock pub, used to be packed Fri & Sat with folk before they all went to Madison's Rock Club nights by the Playhouse. I've heard of mainly in the context of starting or switching tasks, but I wonder if it could apply to environments too. One thing I've found is that every time we move flat, I find the flat hunt the most stressful part because I have to invest in the potential new place we apply for. I have to see myself living there & I start imagining how my life will change to accommodate it. And until the contract is signed, I'm all nervy because my new reality might shatter at any moment.

@weirdwriter I'm not an author but one I've heard good things about is LibroFM. It seems like Author's Republic is the one they recommend although they have other partners too.

A space opera that failed to find its audience, but which has the merit of having attempted to bring Flash Gordon (kind of) into the 21st century. And not to have been pulled out of a IP.

My husband and I are both left-handed.

There are approximately 708 million left-handers in the world.

Over 9% of people are left-handed.

Apparently these numbers do not meet the threshold for inclusion in product design.

My former Mr. Coffee coffeemaker had ambidextrous functionality. The flap over the water reservoir opened to the back, allowing someone to pour water easily from either side.

My new Mr. Coffee coffeemaker includes a design change. The flap over the water reservoir opens to the left, making it almost impossible for me pour water into it.

I just bought a new electric water kettle. The first time I filled it with water, I guessed at the fill limit because I saw no markings inside.

Then I read the instruction manual that referenced the maximum fill line. What? Turns out, I can only see the fill line markings if I fill the kettle while holding it in my right hand. 🤦‍♀️

If you are a product designer, you commit design malpractice if you fail to acknowledge the existence of left-handers.

@artemis @shansterable Me neither but I'd happily buy a well-designed product that works for both, or from a line of products that comes in multiple versions (without charging left-handed people more).
Next time I replace our kettle I must look for one like this. Though I'm right-handed, the tap is to the right of the kitchen sink so I have to hold the kettle in my left hand to fill it. And then put it down & rotate it to see the external fill indicator. 🤷‍♀️

Nearly a year ago I put up a video on TikTok about how to open a terry’s chocolate orange using physics so you don’t have to bash it on anything, you just squeeze it and it falls apart.

Every day since then at least someone has liked and favourited it, and about once per month or so someone replies going “This didn’t work!” And then a few minutes later “yes it did, never mind” I think all but 2 later deleted their comments 😂
