I was listening to a thing about the Wahabists who seized the Grand Mosque for about 2 weeks. They had a guy who they thought was the Mahdi, but he denied it, which made them say "ah, only the Mahdi would deny being the Mahdi. This just proves it." The poor guy ended up getting blasted.

@RolloTreadway @girlonthenet Some banks will allow you to deposit them by scanning them with their app! Absolute life-saver when I was staring at the archaic slip of paper that the tax man had posted to me when I was living in a different country & I was trying to figure out wtf to do with it.
I think that was the 3rd time in my life I've ever had to deal with a cheque... Except the first time I went to the US in 2009 & had to deal with travelers cheques. 🙄

I think there's a part of my brain that keeps parroting some received wisdom that if I do a little bit of everything (tech learning, language practice, creative stuff, cleaning the house, exercise, reading, ...) every day, somehow I won't tire myself out because I'll be using different parts of my brain for each thing, & quite frankly that part can STFU because it's the context switching that kills me.

Started playing on tonight. My first time playing an almost entirely with no/minimal visuals & I'm really enjoying it. The audio-only aspect makes it easier for me to concentrate on the story & action when my brain is tired of processing visual info like it is now after a few hours of reading & watching TV.

@mckra1g @blogdiva @RustyBertrand Funnily enough, I don't think hatcheries would satisfy them. I think subjugating women is a big part of the idealised appeal. But at the same time, the reality of that is having to deal with real life women who aren't real-dolls who treat them like the kings they desperately think they are.

When reading Kurt Vonnegut's Mother Night 20 years ago, it was about the Nazis. Specific. Black and white.

Now, watching the movie, all their catchphrases and hate are echoed from almost every group of humans on earth.

The way Texans talk about immigrants, the way the EU talks about Indiginenous in the melting icecaps, the way kkkops talk about black people, the way Germans talk about Muslims. The way doctors talk about the disabled. The way men talk about women, the way billionaires talk about humans resources. The white Israeli nationalists talk about Palestinians. UK coastguards watching boats full of people drown.

Are we all just out there shoveling each other into ovens to save our own lives? So we can buy more plastic shit?

Why?

The door is not locked. We can walk out anytime.

I'm not sure what, maybe that the more disposable income you have the more power you have, or go broke trying to influence the future - this seems very like the system we already have & that's shit imo.

    A report card from year 10. It reads in part: English, Grade A, Dana is a very able and talented student who does not always give of her best. This failure to invest much energy in her English prevents her from achieving her full potential although this is not the say that this work is of an inferior standard. Also, Mathematics (Advanced), Grade A, Dana is a keen student but her work lacks discipline. She has a lot of ability but this needs further development.

    I'm thinking about today & how it might relate to my intense dislike of dancing.
    I understand that others like dancing & think I can understand why (although it's a very abstract understanding). I even have a version of it in my head where I enjoy the rhythm of it but the moment there's an attempt to translate that from thought to physical act my brain goes from "this is fun" to "I absolutely hate this, make it stop".
    Does anyone else have this?

    @RolloTreadway Yeah, the dancing in my head thing works for me too. Like I can imagine (& enjoy) the instructions I'd need to give my muscles to move, even getting to the point of tensing or relaxing the muscles sometimes in anticipation of the movement, but the moment I actually move it's like my brain nopes out.

    @pathfinder I think there's definitely an element of self-consciousness for me too because of my lack of coordination, but I've been assuming it was that that was making me dislike it. Whereas now that I examine it more, it's actually a dislike for the movement itself. Even when I'm alone & can't be judged, the closest I get to dancing is in my head. Otherwise I just feel very uncomfortable.

    Went to see yesterday at the . Felt like 80% of a good film (if you can get over the "OMG, this is happening in OUR country? 😱" vibe while exactly the same thing happens in countries around the world but they don't have easily recognisable monuments being blown up). But the last 15 minutes just descended into typical sentimental American good-guys-vs-bad-guys drivel & dragged it off course.
    Nice to see 90% of the Devs cast back together though.
