PowerPoint and Team people, I haven't had a in 9 years until recently when PP and teams powers combine... to screw my machine SPECTACULARLY.

RayNewman,

@timdnewman oh no! Have you tried turning it off and on again? (Passers by: he's my little brother, I'm allowed to be annoying like this.)

RayNewman, to Trains

Finally rode the Wuppertal Schwebebahn.

RayNewman, to filmsFr

Cool that the last issue of Sight & Sound came with a fun Martin Scorsese mask for every reader.

And the award for most Avant Garde Bristol pavement parking 2023 goes to...

Out for a walk with my camera. A man just jumped down from a tree and sang “Take a picture of ME!” I said, “No, you're alright, cheers.” To which his response was “Hmm, but why not of this beautiful tree, though?” Either off his tits or a woodland sprite. Not sure which.

RayNewman, to ai

Weird to have one foot in tech consultancy where everyone is very excited about the amazing potential of AI; and another in the creative world where everyone is furious about it. I'm floating about in the middle annoying both sides by going "Well, actually..."

One of the all-time great descriptions of a cat, from the story ‘Child’s Play’ by Elizabeth Jane Howard, 1975.

Not sure I’m going to win my argument that “office clean desk policies are ableist, actually”.

RayNewman,

@Nickiquote I wonder if we'll look back at the push to open plan hot desking in years to come with some collective embarrassment. Really not great for people who are neurodivergent or have anxiety conditions. Another problem basically solved by home working where your office can be as weird as you like/need.

  • RayNewman,

    @sarajw Amazon, weirdly, does both.

“Make it dirty...” This usage must stop.

    RayNewman, to writing

I need a month off work to write all the short stories and blog posts on my to-do list. As it is, I have a few hours this morning to write one or two things and I'm frozen with indecision.

Woken by the sound of footsteps on the stairs. Then an invisible presence in the bedroom. Sat up, ready to fight or fly. At which point the neighbour's tiny black cat emerged from the shadows at the foot of the bed, ran back to the attic, and scrambled out of the skylight.

My favourite photo from my walk through central London yesterday.

My dad is getting old. A trip to the pub the other day felt like a real expedition with lots of grumbling about the hills and the distance. (It's 10 mins from my house, with barely a slope.)

He has an industrial lung condition which is catching up with him in his seventies... or, the latest thinking, asthma he's had since he was a baby that was just never diagnosed.

So I worry about him quite a bit.

    Then, last Friday... 🧵

    RayNewman,

Last Friday, he played three 45-minute sets with his blue band in a busy pub, finishing well after midnight. I was worried about how he'd handle this, to be honest. Might it finish him off?

But when I spoke to him the next day, he was like a new man (no pun intended): buzzing, and looking years younger.

There's something here, I think, about hanging onto your passions and hobbies.

I swear there's a bit of him that thinks, even now, that he might still make it big.

    RayNewman,

It made me think of this piece by Xan Brooks for The Guardian about the actor Michael Caine's new novel:

    https://www.theguardian.com/film/2023/jun/08/michael-caine-novel-deadly-game-rubbish-happy-ending

    RayNewman,

“When the interview was over, I played back the recording. It was like listening to two separate conversations with two separate men. The first man was old. He complained about his gammy leg and his failing memory... The other man was different and the contrast was striking. Time and again, Caine brought the subject back around to his book. The years fell away. He was lively, enthusiastic, self-deprecating.”

    RayNewman,

This is making me ask myself what makes me feel like that. What is the thing that turns me from a morose, introverted, middle-aged grump into an excitable, ambitious twentysomething?

I've been posting photos on Instagram, mostly using my Ricoh GRIII with, lately, a vivid Kodak-ish film simulation.
