Ōtepoti resident, Tāmaki Makaurau raised. Covid protection cult proselytiser. I like tramping, reading, cycling, crafting and cooking, but don't seem to get around to doing them a lot.
Very keen on plants.

One of the truly remarkable things about "The Mother's Day Aurora" was that, here in New Zealand, we tend to see the aurora low in the southern sky. Not this time! This was the view looking NORTH at 7:58pm! The whole sky was green!

@iangriffin
There was a house away up behind my viewing spot with lights on and curtains open.
I thought it wouldn't matter too much as it was directly north.

Hey @plants and gardeners of . Today was a big day - the first time this year where I went outside right after work to pull weeds. YAY 🤣🤣 (partially I am genuinely happy, but OTOH.... weeds 😫)

Question, can someone help me ID the (young) plant in the picture? It's spread widely already and is heavily rhizomatous.

If your answer is Campanula rapunculoides, I might cry

Doesn’t “traditional” wife mean SUBJUGATED wife.

RedRobyn,
@RedRobyn@mastodon.nz avatar

@CStamp
In Aotearoa we have a small conservative Christian community where babies go to childcare at 2 weeks old so the mother's can return to labour in traditional roles like cooking, laundry and sewing the community's "traditional" clothing. The babes are even breastfed- the women are summonsed by radio and allowed a half hour break to dash to the creche and feed and change their infant.
@KitsuneSeele @StillIRise1963

RedRobyn,
@RedRobyn@mastodon.nz avatar

@StillIRise1963
I don't think it's possible to have a general feeling, it's incredibly context dependent. For women who have no contact with the community it runs the gamut from "I guess they seem to be happy" through smugness or pity to burning rage on behalf. For Leavers there's a degree of anger - they took an Employment Court case to get themselves declared "employees" rather than "volunteers" Those testifying against them included women still in the community.

RedRobyn,

@StillIRise1963
But it's a multi generation high demand, high cost cult. Women who have been brought up in it later say they didn't have the language to really think about how they felt, so patronising as it sounds I don't think we can give much weight to the women who say they are happy with it. I have also heard a trustee in the Leavers' trust say that the women who are on the record as saying they are happy have a different place in the hierarchy.

RedRobyn,
@RedRobyn@mastodon.nz avatar

@strypey
Absolutely agree. I was disgusted, but not surprised when I heard about it. I s'pose after the Douglas/Prebble antics lurching the fiscal policy towards an ideology that hadn't really been campaigned on Labour might have decided they need to listen to the people. But focus grouping a bunch of people who sign up to do it for grocery vouchers then get chosen by a market research co. isn't how you that

RedRobyn,

@strypey
To be fair my Intel isn't as detailed as my speculation here. But yes one can definitely manage outcomes by careful selection of participants. It's why we changed the rules on jury challenges after the Crewe murder trials, where the prosecution had unlimited challenges and used them to rid the jury of educated people. Thf type of people might have the skill set to question the police evidence

    I don't want an EV car for daily driving, I have the motorcycle for that. What I want is something for roadtripping places. I know with something cheap I wouldn't have great range, but I don't mind charging regularly (tho I wouldn't want the range to be under 100km, lol).

    My experience with the 30 differs, but they really are the worst of the air-cooled leafs for overheating. (Same battery chemistry and architecture as the 24, but with an unnecessarily greedy BMS that asks for a faster charge rate than is good for it)

    Do not under any circumstance buy a 30 kWh leaf for roadies in the South, especially not now there are so many rebate converts stressing thf charging infrastructure

    It's not the strangers staring. It's the friends and friends of friends making it clear, usually without words, that they think I am neurotic, but will politely tolerate it. I'm getting slightly more confident bluntly bringing it up. That's easier in public spaces because they can tell themselves it's other people I think are germy and recklessly don't give a shit. But in private homes it's clearly them I don't trust to let me know if they get sick. Wearying.

    I think the major thing I'm hearing from other NZ EV owners (and I agree with it, alongside the fact that the 2% threshold is too low) is that we all knew that Road User Charges (RUCs) would be coming, and we agree with paying them, but what they're set at is quite unfair & counterproductive.

    RedRobyn,
    @RedRobyn@mastodon.nz avatar

    @lisafox

    Surely there is a threshold below which it’s pointless to collect a damage based RUC? Back of envelope calculation shows the 40t 8 axle behemoth causing 50 million times the damage of a 100 kg bicycle + rider combination.

    I’d be unhappy to say the least to pay the admin and registration fees required to collect the fractions of a cent per1000km that are proportional to the RUCs trucks pay

    A reply to my post uses an offensive term in the heat of the moment. I don't want to feed the trolls by replying, but I don't want people thinking I endorse that kind of hateful language. So I click Mute Post, and and anyone who views my account on Mastodon.nzoss.nz won't see it.

    Whilst I would like to be able to show that I do not condone the words or sentiment in a post, and wanting a tool to stop people using highly boosted threads to amplify the reach of vileness; making reply posts vanish from all visibility might be a step too far. I can’t think of a way to explain why I think it’s right for me to mask without the implication that I therefore think it would be helpful if others did too. It doesn’t matter that I don’t say it. It hangs there like an accusation that I think they don’t give a damn. Which is not at all what I think or want to say (thoug the complicated part where I understand how hard it is to go against our new norm isn’t exactly flattering to non-mask wearers either)

    Those bottom lines def a problem for them keeping swing voters, coupled with the fear tactics. I'm afraid I have a pearl clutching suspicion that a bunch of the left vote couldn't stomach voting green or TPM because of te Tiriti so just didn't vote.
    But the most important left Labour have lost is in themselves. Robertson and Hopkins used to attend demos demanding free education. Now they preside over tertiary funding cuts. Ardern was the president of a socialist youth union. And now?
