that ambivalent feeling when you fixed something for its main task (yay!) by making it less capable overall (fuck!) albeit in a way you don't really use (yay!) but have done and could again (fuck!) because despite knowing exactly what's wrong (yay!) you are never finding the part (fuck!)

which is why my 1st gen anker soundcore now has a barrel jack and is 100% externally powered.

tho' I suppose I could rig up a battery pack and make it mobile again. fugly, but mobile.

RickRae,

@moira

Out of curiosity, what was the unobtainium part?

RickRae,

@moira

Ouch. I know how that is; I've been there. Most recently it took three rounds of measure/compare against spec drawings/order on faith before I finally found the mate to an onboard JST-like connector. And that was a fraction of the possibilities of your case.

Thanks for explaining!

The "better experience in the app" is actually the same experience but with more tracking and adds.

RickRae,

@erikKroes
Not even as good as "the same" in some cases. One can zoom in/out (with text reflow on most sites) using a browser. Apps are often "You'll take what we give you and like it."

It is read-only Friday. Go home. Do not commit changes to prod unless you like to work on a weekend.

Fridays, and Murphy, trump trustworthy deployment processes.

Trying to look myself up for something online is always like "margaret mitchell -wind".
One day I won't have to subtract the Wind.
One day.

RickRae,

It does seem you're getting there, though! :ablobcatattention:

RickRae,

Well done.

Also, "Ouch".

But that's the sign of a good pun. Follow earned.

OMG. Boomers and their phone that still make noises. I couldn’t even tell you what my ring tone sounds like. 🤷‍♂️

RickRae,

@aallan
Yes, much more pleasant to hear "bzzz-brap" as the phone dances across the table.

I'll take a pleasant ring tone over that any day. :ablobcatwave:

RickRae,

@aallan
Table versus pocket aside, I've never heard a phone you can't hear on vibrate.

Oh, wait... :blobcatThink:

There are multiple reasons why a phone might be on a table versus in a pocket. Off the cuff, you can't see the display in your pocket, you can't take notes in your pocket, and so on.

I do agree with you on the rude factor, and would be delighted for you to come explain that to various coworkers. Not to mention answering a call and having a conversation from a bathroom stall...

RickRae,

@aallan
Just for perspective: We use Teams at my workplace, and despite the IM capability RIGHT THERE, we still have people who insist on TEAMS CALLING me.

Old habits die hard, I guess.

Fictional historical narratives are a big part of authoritarian ideology. The “good old days” Putin and Trump promote might as well include nostalgia for when dinosaurs helped humans with the harvest.

What a great mental image! :ablobcatheart:

Coincidentally, T-Rex came up on a podcast recently and I was surprised to learn they were only about 12' tall. All those museum visits as a little kid, along with the stances originally thought to be more upright, must've really messed with my head.

For all you non-native English speakers out there, “read” is pronounced like “lead”, and “read” is pronounced like “lead”.

RickRae,

@MarkMifsud

Related trivia: Back in the 50s "Unifon" was developed, which used phonetic characters for "spelling." Completely eliminates read/read issues.

And if you read (not read) what someone else wrote in their regional dialect (versus standard pronunciation), you experience what it's like to hear them - it comes out in THEIR accent/dialect.

Never really caught on, though Unicode does (mostly) support it.

@dgar

RickRae,

@markusl

Very cool! :ablobcatattention:

It's interesting how style can come through as well. For example, on the page I linked there is the heading, "a phonetic alphabet for the 21st century", written in Unifon.

They have the initial "a" represented by "U" which is Unifon for "uh".

That's a common pronunciation, but as the article starting the phrase it feels awkward to me, and I would've written/spoken it with a long "a" (Unifon equilateral triangle).

@MarkMifsud @dgar

RickRae,

@markusl
Given the inventor was American - and how US-centric we can be - that makes sense.

Randomness: I'm not much of a languages guy, but I've been nibbling around the edges of Japanese, and it's fascinating to delve into a language that uses non-English sounds AND a syllabary versus an alphabet.

I think I have some idea for my game now, if you have better ideas please!

Okay so the idea is to get from the start point to the magic tree at the 'end of the map'.

But to get there you need to battle scary monsters that are super strong (like in Dark Souls and Elden Ring) and ofc you gotta complete some quests along the way!

There are 3 main ways to get to the end point so you can always chose what you want to do!

The total map is 83 x 83 square kilometers if im correct :blobcatgiggle:

RickRae,

@stux
Looks great!

And my next #C question 🙂

I use a lot, it is great.

I always find some memory issue left over when running , caused by popt. It is always small and so not something I worried much about.

I noticed it seems to be that a string argument to my command from popt is in fact malloc'd. I.e. I can free() it without error, and that fixes the valgrind complaint.

But the man page on popt does not say which things it malloc's.

Does popt always do it?

RickRae,

@dakkar
That was my first thought too, but what if an argument is supplied that happens to be the same as the default?
