Trump has said FOUR times that he will withhold federal funding from schools that require vaccines. Not just COVID. ALL.

This is most schools. This is hitting me where I work. This will lead to children dead from measles. It's obvious, inevitable.

Someone on here said they just couldn't bear to vote for Biden to keep Trump from office since at least under Trump there were better masking rules.

I hope that person sees this.

Worse is worse.

edit: because I don't know measles from smallpox

It's nuts in Star Trek that they postulate nobody would know how to cook anymore bc of replicators. True cooking perverts would love the opportunity to have a kitchen where you could get any quantity of any ingredient instantly, AND (maybe more impressive) any cooking implement.

I could use a huge wok or waffle iron or food processor without worrying about where to put it. Just chuck it back in the replicator with the dishes when you're done

New levels of food perversion unlocked

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@InternetEh And every version you make, you scan it in, so people can eat that whenever they want to without you having to cook it again. So you can spend your cooking time on experimenting and making it better.

Good morning folks

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@blind_mapmaker @DarkestKale The Skinner-box treadmill of "I did an adventure, number go up" is at the root of the problem, and can partly be solved by not playing that sort of game—rather than generic Hero's Journey, one can start with a competent character and progress slowly if at all.

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@DarkestKale @blind_mapmaker I still remember Mike Pondsmith ranting at GenCon about how all these Cyberpunk 2020 players were playing his game wrong and the new thing (Cybergeneration) would show them.

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@blind_mapmaker @DarkestKale Yeah, I think D&D 3e and later makes this very obvious with its steady escalation of foe parameters so that you're facing basically the same difficulty of fight for you even as your abilities increase.
I agree, absolute power level doesn't matter. What makes for interesting games IMO is a bit of ability to affect the world and stakes that make it worth the risk. (Which is why a Kids With Bikes game is playable even if you say "there will be no death or serious injury".)

@blind_mapmaker @DarkestKale For me interesting games in the long term come from doing different things, not from doing the same things with bigger numbers.

@drandrewv2 This pretty much happened at BT in the 90s, they wanted to get rid of some of their older technical people so offered a moderately generous early retirement package… which was oversubscribed by about 3×. So they they had to decide who got it.

The company that's contracted to do security education has these little multiple choice tests, and it annoys me that they are confusing on purpose ... or they require you to listen to the wording of their videos carefully. eg:

Which URL is suspicious?

a. http : //www.gmail.com
b. https : //www.google.com/email

Um. The domain is valid for both. https is nice, but the later is a google 404... the former will re-load as https:

They wanted you to say the second one? Bad question.

Looking for modern (so 2000's onwards or at least no older than mid 1990's) Mystery / Romance that DOES NOT involve murder.

Does such a thing exist?

Reccs please !

I assume that Mystery / Romance as a hybrid genre already exists but am not sure... 🤷🏿‍♀️

I know that ' Romance & ' as a genre is a far spanning horizon...

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@Faintdreams Hmm, tricky. I think mystery tends to gravitate towards murder, or at least plausible murder, because of its shockingness.
Romances probably tend to happen in mystery stories more than mysteries tend to happen in romance stories. (van Dine was complaining that "There must be no love interest" in 1928.)

Random thought… let's say I find an open source application for Android or iOS. It has prebuilt packages in the relevant store.
How do I check that the packages have been built from the source I can see?
I think I can install Android Studio (or whatever), compile the whole thing, and compare the apk I get to the apk on my phone (already messy because extracting it from my phone is not always trivial, plus I can't do a simple binary diff because the store apk is signed…)
What about iOS?

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@dakkar If you use F-Droid, you know that they did this already.

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@dakkar The flow for F-Droid packages is: author sends F-Droid the build recipe, F-Droid builds the package from that recipe, that's what gets uploaded.

If someone offers you funding to research the military potential of N, the morally correct response is to spend the grant money on a team of assassins to take out those funders.

If we keep doing this long enough perhaps we can stop all this pointless military research and spend money on things that are good and useful.

@DarkestKale @BigJackBrass I've read interviews with Scott Derrickson, who directed the 2008 remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still. He also talks about how much he cares about the original story. I assume there's a lot of coded blinking going on.
