What is the point of littering the feed with "upcoming" videos on youTube? All I ever think is "oh I want to watch that... oh I can't"

Do people really watch youTube like... like it's broadcast TV and IDK plan to turn it on at a ... time... like you have a little thing in your schedule and you have to do it like it's a chore?

I don't get this.

I'm drifting away from youTube anyways. Going back to the newspaper and audiobook lifestyle. Only the ants keep me there...

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@futurebird I watch YouTube channels mostly by RSS feed: the video gets announced, I download it with Naughty Software (tm), and later I watch it. That's what I did with TV back last century when I had a TV. If I couldn't do that, I wouldn't be watching at all.

So, have a ticketing system and a "manage tickets" on their portal.

You can raise a ticket, good.
You can "reply" to a ticket, good.

But when they reply to you, it is email and does not show on the portal. Hmmm

And when you use the "reply" on their portal, they don't even see that!!! Hmmm

Apparently "Regrettably, the feature is currently in the deployment stage and will be available in the upcoming milestone."

Wow, just wow. I think working ticketing may be the first thing I did...

I like immigration. I like not to have serious skills gaps in our services. I like mixing with people who grew up in other countries. I like being enriched by other cultures. I would like the feeling that my country opened its arms to people fleeing terrible situations elsewhere. I don’t understand why other people don’t think like this

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@purplepadma I have heard it suggested that the strongest anti-immigrant sentiment in England is in rural places where immigrants rarely go—my assumption would be that they are exposed to the "scary" messaging, particularly the "taking our jobs" instead of how they've been screwed over by successive governments, and don't have "my friends Ali and Gurpreet" to balance it.

Business meetings exist to share information and coordinate activity: this shit enables you to be apparently present in all but actually not engaged with any. If your calendar is triple-booked then your organization is under-resourced and needs more people, not more AI. Or it's holding unnecessary meetings to make management feel better about being surrounded by minions, in which case it needs to fire the executives responsible.

RogerBW,

@cstross But those things aren't going to happen, so here's a way of pretending to be in a meeting when you're actually doing something useful. And all it costs is all the electricity and drinkable water for people somewhere else.

Good morning folks

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@DarkestKale Larry had this habit of talking to fans, who would present him with a problem in one of his books (e.g. the Ringworld is unstable relative to its star), and then writing the fix into a later book.

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@DarkestKale Yup, that's Larry all right.
(In K B Wagers' otherwise fine NeoG series, one company has exclusive access to life extension tech, and nobody seems to think that this kind of monpooly might have some negative effects on society.)

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@DarkestKale "I don't care about you building your brand, I'm not going to join your patreon, I just came here because I searched for [thing] and all that came up was bloody videos."

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@DarkestKale Well, I mean, it can be. It can also be about apocalyptic Christianity, even though Anno said quite plainly that he put in the Christian trappings because it was a weird religion most of his audience wouldn't be familiar with.

RogerBW,

@DarkestKale And my point is really that there's so much not quite explained that you can make Evangelion be about anything you want, and that is a virtue in itself.

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@DarkestKale Yeah, I remember hearing about a Japanese card game that sounded quite fun, and then I saw it at Essen and "this is just an excuse to put preteen girls in fetishy versions of Axis uniforms isn't it".

So a Screenwriter - selling a course on adapting novels into screenplays - titled his Linked-In article post

"Why is the film always better than the book?"

Aaaaaand I know it's 'I wanna sell you something clickbait'.. but no.

This is demonstrably not true.

What examples immediately spring to mind for you ?

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@Faintdreams An unpopular one, I suspect, but The Running Man. A Stephen King non-horror potboiler that's desperately trying to be dark and edgy, versus a mindless Arnie-a-thon that was the inspiration for American Gladiators (only rather more murdery).

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@Faintdreams Slightly more seriously, my underlying theory is that the medium defines the shapse of story that will work well in it—a novel is not a 2 hour film is not a 6 hour TV season. So an adaptation that's any good is likely to be an adaptation of the core concept first; it may steal cool scenes from the original, but it needs to make them fit into a story shape that works in the medium.
(This is also where I disagree with Robin D. Laws on storytelling in RPGs: he wants to borrow models from linear fiction, thus Hamlet's Hit Points and DramaSystem, while my experience is that RPG sessions have their own story shapes too, and stories from other media need to be adapted to work well.)

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@Faintdreams Oh yes, I tried to watch live-action Initial D having enjoyed the various anime series and it just felt wrong.

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@Faintdreams Yeah, there's a particular way of leaving stuff out which will be filled in by the actors, the set dressers, or the special effects department, which is very hard not to notice once one has spotted it.
