I have just seen a modern version of a traditional instrument described as "folkternative" and I'm sure that civilisations have been toppled over less.

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@BigJackBrass I go with Leslie Fish's old definition: it's a folk instrument if you can grab it up and run away with it when the police raid comes in.

The StackOverflow controversy reminds me of the CDDB/Gracenote situation from, geez, 25 or so years ago. There was no AI, but CDDB:

  • Built a CD recognition database using the work of unpaid volunteers
  • Shared this freely-- for a while
  • Decided that their open-source pledge had been in error
  • Switched to incompatible data formats
  • Sold out to a new owner and started charging for access
  • Filed patents and sued competitors

It's currently property of Nielsen Holdings.

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@atomicbird Similarly IMDb, built on volunteer work, which until 2017 used to have all their data for download (promised in perpetuity), and now offer only a limited subset (e.g. you can't construct someone's full list of credits, only films in which they had a major role). They first tried to make even this a requester-pays S3 bucket, then backed down.

To be honest, there is no way a starship captain directs the ship using "degrees mark degrees". It would not be precise enough, for a start, and no way that it would make sense.

It would be like steering a car by constantly having to say "set course 243 degrees" and the like, rather than simply setting the sat nav.

It is one of the strangest features of I have tolerated.

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@revk Yes, well, Gene was an Air Force man not a Navy man, and that was how you flew a plane. (Even to some extent now, though you'd more usually feed a set of waypoints to the FMS and it would calculate the right bearing to fly on including wind correction.)

Inevitably, the part about skipping today and taking a rest from the Cliff Edwards Project can be safely ignored.

A popular Irving Berlin number this time, covered by all manner of people over the years including Cliff on the "Shakin' the Blues Away" LP.

Ukulele songsheet for "Everybody Step" by Irving Berlin (1921). Lyrics and chord diagrams, unfortunately too much for alt-text.

Tea break this morning involved a spot of plinking and strumming on my Ohana O'Nino sopranissimo. I've settled on CDAF tuning for this one, which sounds good and has also improved the intonation (always a problem with fretted instruments of this size). Pretty happy with it.
