Good morning, I slept better thank goodness. The weather is sunny despite some big dark clouds, we’ve got one load of washing out on the line and another lined up to do. Today is going to be a quiet day, no plans except maybe a run later. You?

RolloTreadway,
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

@purplepadma Also slept well, but another awfully stressful day ahead for me. Weather is very grey here but fingers crossed it'll be better after lunch.

Y'all I just made myself feel so old, hubs looked up top 100 music from 2001, 2011, 2021, and today and the amount of music I could recognize decreased by significantly. I recognized probably 70% of 2001 and decreasing as I went on. BUT I blame the internet, I can listen to exactly the kind of music I want with no dependence on the radio, but also I'm old!

RolloTreadway,
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr No, I'm not having this.

Music charts are irrelevant now and have been for ages. Hell, the high point of 'everyone listening to the same things' wasn't even 2001ish, it was in the first decade or so of the rock'n'roll boom, mid-50s to late-60s.

Everything has become more disparate since then. Always more branches on the tree, year on year. What the internet did was to break down the walls that separated different areas of music.

So young people today who are listening to Taylor Swift or BTS will also be listening to myriad other things, from any point in time or any place in the world, in any kind of genre. Hell, even the success of BTS is striking because, when we were younger, who would've imagined a Korean group becoming global megastars?

The charts, the 'top 100 songs' are just industry statistics. You might as well base your shopping on buying only the 100 most popular foodstuffs, ignoring the fact that you can get whatever you want and a million other things you've not tried yet.

One of the most remarkable things about music in this globally-connected era is that artists no longer need the big labels to be heard. Don't get me wrong, the labels are still there and still as utterly rotten as ever. But now they follow trends rather than directing them. What was popular on the charts back in the day was very much decided by the major labels (which, of course, is why genres like punk and techno etc branched away from the industry entirely to do their own thing).

Consequently, whether you know or don't know what's on the charts in 2024 means nothing. You listen to what you want! The kids are also listening to whatever they want. The only people who are in any way limited are those who stick to some big radio station and then say 'there's no good music out there blah blah blah'.

I'm getting old too. I obsess over finding new things to listen to. 2023 was, for my tastes, an amazing year. One of the best ever. The diversity of creativity was astonishing! There's so much out there!

And the albums that I adored included all sorts of things from all over the world, and it also included a big pop star (Lana Del Rey). I love that I can do that now, just listen to anything.

'Anything', which includes, as well as the new stuff, Lead Belly and Bessie Smith (oh, I do love Bessie) and everything else you might find within the last hundred years.

It doesn't matter what age you are, it doesn't matter if you know which artist happens to have made the most revenue for some label, it doesn't matter if you're adhering to some notion of 'popular' or 'cool' that I can guarantee has been made by marketing executives somewhere, that I can guarantee is at least two or three years behind what is actually cool right now. It doesn't matter whether your current favourite was made in 2024 or 1924.

All that matters is that you keep enjoying and enthusing about and caring about whatever music it is that works for you. So long as you do that, you're not old or tired or out of touch. You're only an old listener if you reach that point where you listen to the same radio station and complain that there's nothing good any more.

Long rant ends.

(I care about this matter a lot.)

Don't know what to do with myself this evening. Probably go to bed soon. Decided to have a belated think about this week's , for which @neurothing wants - five favourite opening songs of albums.

I'm not sure I can think of five that I'd say are my favourites. I'm far too tired and there's far too much music.

So here's five that came immediately to mind as being particularly good.

Anna Meredith - Nautilus
(from the album Varmints)

The Selecter - Three Minute Hero

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in a relationship?

Mine might sound kind of dark in relation to the question, but here goes:

People change, and they should, it's part of being a person. Some people are lucky, and they change in the same direction, but some don't, and that's okay too. There's no shame in leaving a relationship or changing the nature of a relationship that no longer serves you. We are all taught that every relationship, whether romantic or friendship, is supposed to last forever, but nothing is forever, and forcing something that no longer works, just ends in anger and bitterness. Knowing when to let go is as important as knowing when to hold on through a rough patch, and how to know either of those things is the most cliché advice of all, COMMUNICATE.

RolloTreadway,
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr Know what red flags are for you, and stick to them resolutely. And expect your partner(s) to do the same.

@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

Today has been a disaster and I've not even gone to the dentist yet.

Lots of things went wrong with the computer when I was in the office, and through a series of tedious but unpleasant events that I won't try to describe, I've lost some really important data. Specifically: the cardiac arrest data that I've been working on and now need to redo in only two days.

And what's more, I've lost most of the formulae and mechanisms that I've developed to make that arrest work a whole lot easier.

And my internet is on the blink.

What is the thing(s) that attracts you to a person romantically or otherwise?

RolloTreadway,
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr Being caring and thoughtful.

Always seems odd to me that people use "they've got a nice personality" as a euphemism for being unattractive. Nice personalities - well, genuinely nice personalities, not the pretence that some affect when they want something - are the most attractive thing!

Morning! I’m having so much trouble getting to sleep since I changed my med timings. I was up until 1am again last night, even a sleep meditation didn’t do the trick. Still I had nothing particular to get up for, so I slept until 9am. Social worker coming round this afternoon, I can tell her that I’m much improved and probably don’t need her anymore - but! I want to ensure I can get timely support if things go bad again! What’s on your agenda?

RolloTreadway,
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

@purplepadma Yes, make sure you don't cut off the social support too soon. Glad you're still improved though!

My agenda today isn't a lot. I'll go for a walk in a bit, maybe some gardening, but I'm not feeling great today so there'll probably be a lot of sofa time.

Just seen a post with a content warning because it contained a mention of food.

I have opinions, but it would be uncharitable to share them.

RolloTreadway,
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

@DJDarren This is a complicated and delicate issue.

There are people here with eating disorders, for whom being unexpectedly exposed to food pictures and discussion is very problematic.

There are also people here with eating disorders, for whom seeing food behind a CW gives the impression that food is itself the problem, and this too is harmful.

There's no right answer here. The option I lean towards, after discussing this a lot with people who are affected in both ways, is to use a food hashtag that makes it easy to mute or ignore. But that too is not a perfect answer.

Folk are just trying their best to be as considerate as possible, and there are various different ways to approach this.

Morning everyone. Four day weeks are such a good thing, and I wish more people had the ability to do them (where appropriate and desirable).

Unfortunately, some things have given me the 'despair at my life having been taken away' feelings, so I'm not doing well right now. I shan't wang on about them here again because it's the same story as many times before.

Also, I had a dream about my Dad being an alcoholic, which is weird, because Dad drank very sparingly and I never saw him even slightly tipsy. Dreams, eh? Odd things.

RolloTreadway,
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr There's a lot of evidence that people are indeed more efficient and productive. The obsession with 5 days, 9-5, is arbitrary and pointless.

I've been doing four days for about seven years now, it's made a big difference.

Okay, since I'm on laundry today, a little story.

When hubs and I first got married, we were very much enjoying our little Honeymoon Bubble, and we were being lazy as Hell. We didn't do many chores, but the laundry we really let go. We weren't wearing many clothes at home anyway, so why bother. Anyhow, after weeks we finally reached the swimming suit bottoms situation, and decided it was time. It was loads and loads of laundry that needed done, so I had my husband back the trunk of the car up to a window of the house, then he popped the trunk, and I started tossing laundry out of the window into the trunk. We went to the bank, got about $30 bucks in quarters, and found the emptiest laundry mat we could, and did it all in one fell swoop. We folded it all and loaded it back into the car using those wheeled laundry carts. We never let it get that bad again, and decided it was time to be adults, and do regular chores, but it still makes me laugh imagining what the neighbors and the laundry attendant thought.

Feel free to share your own laundry story, if you feel like it, I love hearing people's stories!

RolloTreadway,
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr I've only ever used a laundromat once in my life (unless you count the communal laundry facilities when I was in university halls). And that once was when I didn't have anywhere to live for a brief while.

They seem very uncommon here nowadays (although I've heard of some being set up outside big supermarkets, particularly the extra large machines for duvets - but I don't go to big supermarkets or drive so that's not something I have direct experience of).

Otherwise, I've always had a washer at home and I'm very glad of that.

RolloTreadway,
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr And the very first time I went back home from uni, I took all my washing with me, because that's what I'd always heard of students doing. But it was a bloody nuisance carrying it, so I never did it again.
