Got my small unit with me ( 110v is fine) - but finally after 3months using it now for tonight's prep. (no not ) Australian this looked ok - salted + touch soy overnight, touch of peated whisky and blk pepper + hint of cumin then at my preferred 54.5 ⁰C [will let this go 1+ h]
No big pot here, so just using the rice cooker pot.
Should turn out ok... for one of many courses

A fair bit of train(s) rides this morning - to get to in
Will grab lunch first and then some walk around. Original plan was to spend a couple of days - perhaps in Shirahama but the cold wasn't too helpful for the beach or camping so just a day trip

Lazy late decadence!
I can't get over these yolks in (I really want to know what they put in the feed!).
Partner goes for 2 eggs on toast, I finish up some leftover smoked tuna takaki (via Costco) that I chopped & doctored with & chili oil (lao gan ma), topped w aonori & sesame seeds.
😮 soda, sweet averse partner has fanta, as I decide to go with sake (I heard whispers that it goes well with seafood; it does!) - ok this is !

Two eggs fried on a round pan with liberal pepper on them
Two pieces of toast - one with a peppered fried egg on top and the other with chopped pieces of dark tuna a reddish mayonnaise and fleckd of green aonori and sesame seeds
A plastic cup of yellow fanta on ice and a small glass cup of sake.

Spur of yesterday's moment, decided to carpe today and weekend (thanks to good hotel deal) - to show my visiting in laws DC (they'd never been). We and kids were here in April 2016 last to see things.
Left this morning and first a stop for gas at Reston VA Costco and somewhat random pick nearby for Soul food turned out to be a real winner
Steak fries, fish, fried liver, and good sides particularly collards w smoked turkey

A leftover egg yolk from a couple of days ago and partner + kids are putting on a masterclass in
This all purpose flour (via Gyomu; no idea of protein content; ingredients just wheat flour) behaves quite different from AP flour in the US. With a touch of salt & bit of chili powder, thin the batter down by feel till it just coats. The slices of kabocha squash (skin on!) then get fried - our camp pots/pans have not seen this much action!

Continuing* exploration of #sake .
Another small bottle (and among the nicest bottles) but will definitely get bigger! Fridge cold - could taste the umami & slight syrupiness that thinned out and turned sweeter by the next glass. First sake I've had I could imagine how it might be warm (and it'd be good).
Maybe it helped I had fried fish and fried rice just before but this Kenbishi is terrific.
h/t @takosix & @YamaguchiSake for turning me on to this!

This is in south of but away from the other places we'd visited* a few times. So a different set of trains & a bit of a walk (nice sunny morning with cool weather).
We'd seen info on chusen and at the Sakai traditional crafts museum - that had nice displays and videos. But we wanted to dig a bit deeper, especially for the kids to see

An entire afternoon most excellently spent with family yesterday at in Mitaka
It's mostly just a large building with 3 floors. A whimsical and beautiful space - no pics allowed inside just in the outside portions. Leaven/MrDough & the Egg Princess was the short in the theatre. Seeing the drawings and paintings of scenes was quite amazing. Highly recommend (book in advance - get tickets via Lawson)

Opened Door with stained glass with Princess Mononoke art . Outside is a building wall completely covered with ivy with just 2 yellow small windows showing.

What.A.Day!
Great day at Univ. Q&A after seminar went in for 40mins - maybe because you can encourage even college students to speak up if you offer stickers (hot tip, let the shy kids at the back who stay on, come & get stickers after anyway)
Then a most fabulous shabu shabu dinner with Kagoshima pork (+ sake) in an amazing environ

Sorry no more details now - going to bed - I have to wake up for a 6am zoom panel (4pm US) 😳

Stickers (not stuck) on the top of a desk with fingers pointing and picking out. The stickers are science themed. One is a test tube with the text "" , another is a picture of a dog in a lab coa with text "Science Lab", another is a beaker with blue liquid and bubbles and text Quit Overreacting

Home/apt now - and the last 2 things I picked up shikuwasa citrus (at airport) and umi budo (sea grapes). My host at OIST mentioned the umi budo at dinner and said I'd get it at the airport but I found a shop selling sea stuff on my walk. Not to be refrigerated (they shrink)
These are very interesting - crunchy, pop & dissolve in mouth and taste like seawater and oysters

Strolling 100 yen shops (Daiso, Seria) as a break from packing, trying not to get more stuff.
But so many convenient useful tools here - easier to say no if it's plastic, also easier to say no if it's heavy 😅
I guess I like grocery and local stores as touristic entertainment...

Anyways here's a pic of another did not buy item, just saw and kept myself entertained

Living the best apartment life for my kids!
Picked up this tray of cut salmon from the Daimaru last night - kids love salmon for
And we had sushi rice from dinner (will fill you in on that in a bit), so et voila

I must say this zojirushi cooker (carted from Japan) makes terrific rice - jasmine now, what we have at home in Pittsburgh and it's way better than our old (Aroma) cooker. A touch dry/hard (on normal setting - will use 'soft' next) but fragrant and fluffy, distinct grains (not as bunched as old).

Great meal with my partner's genius freezer long-marinated thrown together with frozen (if you will). Non chopstick this

This time around in Oxford Mississippi for the 4 day conference, I had the time for a quick stop at a grocery store. It's the best place to pick up local items/foods.

Initially I was a bit dismayed at the grits offerings at Kroger. Besides the Quaker brand 'instant', these were the only others. Being a self respecting type

  • I only picked up one pack. Should have picked up more! This is quick (not instant!) - but that 'cooks in 5 mins", nope - takes 15 and is very good! (see next)
