My local bike shop guy heard about my quixotic quest to adapt a 40 spoke Sturmey Archer hub to a 36 spoke rim with machined adapter plates, and give me another hub to play with.

It looked nice on the outside, but it did not make the expected ratcheting sound that a freewheeling hub should make when spun. It also did not work correctly.

I thought maybe it would just be full of gummed up grease inside so I poured a bunch of paint thinner in there and let it sit, but that did not fix it, so I disassembled it and found it to be extremely crusty, rusty, and gunky inside.

I'm going to try to make it work again, even though this hub still won't work on my bike because it's drilled for 28 spokes lol. It just seems fun to see if I can clean it up and fix it.

I was disappointed that I couldn't get my combat robot, Footloose, ready in time for the Robobrawl tournament last month. However, I found a plastic antweight tournament in Southern California that takes place today and will finally get a chance to put Footloose to the test. Had to modify the weapon, as there is no metal allowed here. It's a single elimination tournament, so it could be over quickly, but there are lots of bots here and it should be a fun event regardless.

A quick box model this morning in ! Anyone recognise the shape?

It needs to be as low poly as possible (for ), and the circles do look a bit blocky. I was thinking of creating a high resolution version, baking the normals, and using these for the blocky version.

@MLE_online

TIL about MW broadcast via the photo Emily forwarded from her father of the Emerson Model 400 "Aristocrat" or "Patriot"! (2-band broadcast receiver)

8- o

Each of the beautiful radios in the pictures receives the "classic" AM band ( 550 - 1610 KHz) which many of us know and is still active today.

The dial on the yellow radio with red speaker grille of the Emerson Model 400 (released in 1940) showed an extra set of frequency "channels" and I dove head-first into that "rabbit-hole"!

The "250-500"* along the bottom of the dial refers to 120-meter Medium-Wave (MW) broadcast band (~ 2300 - 2495 KHz).

Some sources incorrectly put the 120-meter band in "Short-Wave" instead of "Medium-Wave" or "Medium Frequency " band which spans 300-3000 KHz.

The 120-meter band is less active today, especially with FM broadcast band ( 88-108 MHz) and TV broadcast channels which span VHF & UHF, including both the older analog signals & the now "standard" digital signals.

I had seen radio dials with one or more of the 7 short-wave (SW) frequency bands, and the Emerson Model 400 is the 1st with MW bands!

Thanks for reading this far!! :- )

( * 250 & 500 assume a prefix of "2".
Thus, "250" tunes to 2250 KHz & "500" tunes to 2500 KHz. These are just outside the "official" band to receive signals by broadcast stations on the edges. :- )

"Jellyfish can't do much besides swim, sting, eat, and breed. They don't even have brains. Yet, these simple creatures can easily journey to the depths of the oceans in a way that humans, despite all our sophistication, cannot.

But what if humans could have jellyfish explore the oceans on our behalf, reporting back what they find? New research conducted at Caltech aims to make that a reality through the creation of what researchers call biohybrid robotic jellyfish."

The Eyes on Exoplanets is beautifully done, with imagined artistic graphics for each extrasolar planet (although remember in most cases, we're basing these visuals purely from a mass or radius measurement!).

However... whoever wrote that CT Cha b could orbit its star at 440 au (440 x 🌏 ↔️ 🌞 distance) in 365 days... was smoking something BIG while they were typing 🤣

(True period should be about 11,000 years. I have reported the error via their feedback form!)

SaguaroLynx,
@SaguaroLynx@c.im avatar

Oh good! 8- }

I clicked on the link before reading your text. Even my amateur understanding made me stop to consider how big is 1 AU?

Your note confirms that we all correctly detect an issue with the computed value for orbital period! 8- )

This brings a question to mind: what kind of equation(s ) does one use to calculate orbital period? I assume that one needs at least the radius (e.g. 440 AU). Do the masses of the star & planet factor in?

SaguaroLynx,
@SaguaroLynx@c.im avatar

@elizabethtasker

Can one use the same equation to calculate orbital periods of moons or satellites around a planet?

In these cases, I assume that we use the planet's mass for M.

( I've long been curious about LEO & geosynchronous satellites! 8- )
