Although it was not a very big tree, it was rather older than it looked, because conditions for growth had never been easy.

The wind was brutal, the rocky soil hard and scrabbly, the location tenuous.

And yet despite the disadvantages, maybe because of them, the tree continued to grow, strong and resolute and tenacious.

Often while traveling we're in some sort of hurry to get there. Being on the road isn't particularly relaxing.

But when we stop -- generally for those bathroom breaks -- it's an opportunity to take a stroll and be pleasantly surprised by our surroundings.

This is a view we encountered in an out of the way, almost hidden, you just about miss it, rest stop in Oregon.

Initially, what she wanted to find was a seer, an oracle or a prophetess who could impart to her teachings of truth. For that reason she traveled to where she thought this person could be.

But in the course of the journey, she realized that what she was searching for was not someone to TELL her the truth, but the truth itself.

And that she could find by seeking.

"Are you a morning person or a night owl?"

How we love to classify things, gather up various elements and tuck them into boxes that we arrange in a neat, modular stack.

I like both morning and night, and sometimes stay up late, other times get up early (but try not to do both simultaneously).

And I find flowers in the morning to be a cheerful way to start the day.

She did not run from the rain but welcomed it, because she knew how infrequently, how rarely and yet how blessedly, it enriched and healed the land.

Some gifts, she mused, are meant to be savored -- revered and treasured deliberately, quietly, with grace and the deepest of gratitude.

And in such a manner, she did.

There are not so many waterfalls in the world that we can adopt an attitude of, "Oh, ho hum. Let's go see something interesting."

Because they ARE interesting, these flowing rushes of water cascading over cliffs and tumbling into a broiling pool below.

From the big guys to the little ones to all those in between, waterfalls demand that we stop and appreciate their existence.

There comes a point when we can eat no more because our bodies simply must have time to digest what we have taken in.

So it is with knowledge, or what passes for knowledge, or facts, or "news," -- there comes a point when we must stop ingesting and take time to review and ponder over, analyze and question, think upon and contemplate what we have taken in.

Often, we want everything to match, to look the same, to be part of a set that goes together.

But it is so much easier, and can be just as beautiful, when things don't match, don't look all the same -- when each piece, though it shares characteristics with others, does not look like an exact copy of the rest.

The buildup of clouds was gradual but unremitting, nature's musing that though an action may be slow, if it is persistent, it amasses to a state of electrifying power.

At this point the storm paused, almost as if waiting, considering whether it wanted to proceed full force to detonating its pent up fury, or to release and break down, dissipating into nothingness.

Cliffs and crags and rocky reaches -- from my perch I see it all.

After climbing to the heights, I stand at the overlook and survey a kingdom of rugged palisades, daring the traveler to traverse.

It is an eagle eye view, and for this moment, I pretend that I flew here, before I turn back to the trail and continue, step by step, to hike.

Alpine landscapes experience their own weather: they are first to see the snow, last to see it leave.

It's a striking reminder that all is not homogeneous in the world. 99 percent of the trees don't agree; it isn't snowy everywhere at the same time.

There is variety and difference, even disagreement. That's what makes the planet such an intriguing place.
