Did your SC once admire their parents?
(Who else did they admire growing up? What about today?)

Darlene did admire her parents, especially her Father. He was the inly man who could provide the townsmen with all the needed necessities for their life, and never took advantage of that.
But this changed at once right after… (way too many spoilers here) …and it never changed back to how it was before.

RIP Mars, 2010 - 2024
This morning I found Mars run over by a car. I miss him very much. We got him from the shelter and he showed his gratitude every day. He was cuddly, playful, a rascal and very curious. Wherever I was, Mars wasn't far away and he spent many cuddly hours on my lap. I am stunned and incredibly sad. My heart is broken and I am crushed 🖤

What is your MC burningly passionate about?

Kessy turns 15 in two weeks, she hasn't decided yet. I mean, sure she's into physics and astronomy and such things, but she knows that she'll never be able to become an astronaut because she's a girl (1965). So, that's off the table.
But she's still dreaming of going to college at a science major, even if it seems very unlikely as she probably can't afford it as an orphan.

Do you plan out your themes or allow them to develop as you write?

For me, the first thought is always “What if?” Then, I outline the beginning and the end. Anything else gets developed as the story is flowing out of my fingers.

Do you write primarily in the same genre you read as a child?

Jules Verne's futuristic phantasms and Karl May's totally made up Native American/Arabian stories were my favorite as a child, so I can say that I stick to that at least to some extent. I never liked to read romance, even not as a teenager or now as a grown-up. But times change, don't they? 😉

How important is social media in promoting your work?

I can tell you about this in a few weeks, when "The Green Light of Arizona" is going to be published. Then I'll see if some more English speaking people than usual are buying or reading it.

(The German versions of my books sell in general at about [insert some decent amount here] copies, but have also gained up to [insert extraordinary amount here] copies. No bragging intended, but I can live from it.)

What are common traps for new authors?

The most important thing to know is that you never have to pay to become published. Everyone who tells you otherwise is lying, so never pay for that.

Also, don't listen to people who are saying "You can make more money with us!" It's only a trick to lure you in their arms. It happened to me, and I only made the money for a year that I've made before in a month.

Any advice for aspiring authors?

1st — Do it! Don't think, just start.

2nd — You don't have to write a specific daily word count.

3rd — Do not use close family to review what you've written.

4th — You don't have to find a publisher, you can become your own.

5th — Don't give up.

6th — Covers are important, but don't overdo it. Sometimes less is more.

7th — Don't listen to me. You do you. Don't let others influence you too much.

What does your MC or SC first notice when meeting new people?

Kessy has a distinct feeling of body language. That's why she doesn't like the colonel, his language doesn't fit with his body's signs. This also is true for Darlene's parents as they try to hide that her daughter isn't very interested in boys.

SC POV: What is something you were insecure about when you were a child?

Darlene:
“You're kidding me right now, aren't you?”

Narrator:

Darlene:
“Nope, you don't. I see. Alright, let's start with the beginning. As I was born, I was born gay. My parents and I didn't notice, and so I was treated like any other girl. But as time did gone by, I myself became aware that I was different from other girls. It took me 13 years to figure that out, very insecure 13 years.”
