Britain’s ‘most dangerous’ years lie ahead, warns Sunak. It’s cheap politics from a floundering PM

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/article/2024/may/13/sunak-most-dangerous-britain-values

Comment is neither free or easy on the Gruaniad. I notice that Jenkins (a Brexit supporting unionist) failed to mention that Scots were included in Sunaks list of threats.

So much for free comment, and another reason I dropped my contribution to this SE England rag.

A taste of things to come in Scotland?

Spanish media are enthusiastically bigging up the 'historic' decline in support for independence parties in Catalunya, which is still at 44%/45% after yesterday's elections.

They're acting as if (1) it's done and dusted for Catalán independence; and (2) the sizeable pro-independence minority will be "pragmatic" and get back in its box.

Stay tuned....

Below the 12th May front page of the "British Gazette" published daily by Westminster for the duration of the 1926 General Strike to counter the strikers message "suggesting" union activity was less than patriotic.

The end of the strike was followed up by draconian laws of association and assembly to try to shackle unions and scare people from unionising.

If we take the train of events where the UKs single biggest source of income at the time, industry, being threatened by the plebs and apply it to modern day UK, dependent on natural resources - it does underline what the UK media is about.

And once Westminster thinks it has majority support expect draconian reversals on the Scottish parliament.

Fwiw I know I don't know everything and that sometimes things aren't straightforward and it can depend on perspective etc etc. As long as people engage with me in good faith and are civil, I'm pretty much always prepared to listen and be open to being educated and potentially changing my mind.

But it is a bit funny that when I complained that the Met Gala raises twenty two million dollars a year simply to store clothes when there are more than thirty four thousand children living homeless in the same city, someone defended it as simply another expression of art, like Shakespeare and space travel.

I mean no disrespect to that person, but I don't think I agree that the fashion industry is on the same page as other art (although I accept some designers are extremely talented). I just think most art is punching up and fashion is punching down and am always going to laugh at celebrities dressing in stupid clothes and taking it incredibly seriously. I'm prepared to accept not everyone will share this opinion and am fine with it.

Y'know when you think the BBC has gone downhill?

In 2022, it was announced that John McAndrew, who was GB News’s founding editorial director, would join the BBC as its director of news programmes. In the role, he also sits on the BBC News board.

Oh but that's ages ago .... but what's this> THE BBC has hired a GB News executive to take on a key role in its media team....

I’m thrilled to be joining the @BBCNewsUK and can’t wait to begin working with the hugely talented teams across the corporation. I first stepped into a BBC News studio at Television Centre in 1994 so 30 years later to return overseeing them ....

I wasn't advocating starting an illegal gambling club involving pitting a woman against a bear.

The meme format is only ever two options - bear or man, woman is the constant, where the answer is of course the bear.

"We still talk in terms of conquest. We still haven't become mature enough to think of ourselves as only a tiny part of a vast and incredible universe. Man's attitude toward nature is today critically important simply because we have now acquired a fateful power to alter and destroy nature. But man is a part of nature, and his war against nature is inevitably a war against himself."

I've been catching up with some games I buy for the kids, and recently played Planet of Lana and Gris on the switch. Both show an interesting trend, in that they're very beautiful games, but strangely empty.

I notice this in particular with the first, because it reminds me a lot in how the character steers of @jmechner 's Prince of Persia, or Flashback. And compared to either of these games, there is very little going on in each screen in terms of obstacles or puzzles.

And then there are...

There is some irony at listening to Starmer urging an election to "Let the people decide", the same Starmer who does not recognise Scotland's right to have a referendum to "Let the people decide". Yes, indeed, we had one in 2014 but materially, the UK has changed. We have elections every five years yet Scotland is continually denied democracy by, in effect, a foreign country, England. Is the union voluntary, yes it is, how then does Scotland leave ?

Theriac,
@Theriac@plasmatrap.com avatar

@Wen @CloudyMrs @Roadwarrior29

this is a view I've come across in varying forms - our grievances are trivial and airing them instead of sucking it up is ruining things for everyone else. Why can't we think of the greater good?

As I've mentioned in other posts Scots have been collectively assigned a series of character traits - part of which mirrors similar tropes given other member states of the Empire, that the locals are backward children who don't know what's best for them.

Today and probably for weeks the news will be full of an endless queue of politicians and press telling the people of Scotland how we should run our affairs. The vast vast majority of these people will be English and will never have lived or worked in Scotland. Can anyone see why the desire for independence doesn't fall?

Theriac,
@Theriac@plasmatrap.com avatar

@failedLyndonLaRouchite @IndyRichard

The same could be said of any country. There must've been severe mismanagement if things have arrived at a point where such a radical change is seen as the only option.

And here in lies the crux - the world people in Scotland want to live in and the world Westminster wants us to have, do not align and haven't aligned for at least a century, if for that, alignment ever existed.

Theriac,
@Theriac@plasmatrap.com avatar

You can go even further back and find members of parliament in influential positions who were from Scotland. But were they representing Scottish interests?

The answer to that is summed up best by the UK parliament's own website on the topic of the dissolution of the old Scottish parliament:

Since Scotland's small electorate would probably have expressed strong dislike of the Union it was decided to avoid a direct election.

I'll let that sink in for a moment.

The individuals pushing the Union forward in Scotland knew if put to a vote they would lose. They intentionally went against the wishes of the people they represented.

Thus it has ever been and thus we are tired of it.
