Funniest thing I've read all day:

"the United States is committed to serving as a model in the international community in promoting and protecting the collective rights of #indigenous peoples as well as the human rights of all individuals."

https://www.achp.gov/sites/default/files/whitepapers/2018-09/AnnouncementofUSSupportfortheUNDRIP.pdf

@gooba42 Maybe they think that if we believe it hard enough it'll come true (or at least that we'll stop resisting. STOP RESISTING!!)

Toastie,
@Toastie@journa.host avatar

@sarae KUMBAYA GUYS we made it.

Toastie,
@Toastie@journa.host avatar

Imagine a guy telling this to his date.

Listen, I understand the SIGNIFICANCE of people SAYING we should all RECOGNIZE consent. And because I'm an ally, I understand consent to mean CONSULTATION BUT NOT AGREEMENT. Now, let's consult about the action I'm about to take.

Toastie,
@Toastie@journa.host avatar

OMG.

"The United States recognizes the SIGNIFICANCE of the Declaration’s provisions on free, prior and informed consent, which the United States understands to call for a process of meaningful
CONSULTATION with tribal leaders, but not necessarily the AGREEMENT of those leaders, before the
actions addressed in those consultations are taken." [emphasis added]

So in the U.S. consent = consultation but not agreement?

LOVE THAT COLONIZER DOUBLESPEAK. 🙃 💀

@paninid Yes. This. ☝️

Also, the ceded lands were acquired fraudulently, or under duress or threat of violence, or all of these.

Toastie,
@Toastie@journa.host avatar

Never forget:

When the UN introduced its Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Ppl (UNDRIP) in 2007, which included the right to consent to development on their lands and resources, 144 countries voted YES.

Only four countries (all white colonizer countries), including the US, voted no.

More recently, the US has said they now ✨ embrace ✨ UNDRIP, but it's not legally enforceable & there's no US law protecting or even acknowledging the right to consent.

@RiaResists The entire international community and most of America is like "sure, Jan."

Toastie,
@Toastie@journa.host avatar

@DivineKestrel @Lachesis It's like they took marketing lessons from shitty American corporations OH WAIT.

Toastie,
@Toastie@journa.host avatar

Imagine a foreign power said they were gonna bulldoze Gettysburg or Arlington Nat'l Cemetary to extract minerals for their economy back home. Told, not asked.

Say the US objected, and the foreign power invited the US to fill out a complaint form explaining why these are traditionally considered "sacred" lands to the local people.

Then the foreign power bulldozed them anyway, offering Americans bulldozing jobs as "mitigation."

This is what the US does to people. TODAY. Every day.

After the protests and the library occupation at State, the university wanted police to monitor the 51st annual Naimuma Powwow, which was scheduled on campus for May 04. Organizers didn’t love that idea of having police there, so they rescheduled the powwow for May 25th.

Then something special happened: students and community members showed up on May 04 anyway, in the park blocks by the university, and held a spontaneous Powwow for .

"This July, I will turn 100 years old. I was born in 1924 in one of the last encampments and raised in Blacktail. When we were young girls, my sister, who was 10 at the time, and I, just 8 years old, attended a mission school for a year and a half."

Tribes have long been among the staunchest advocates of wildlife crossings. But grant funding stipulations, as well as some state agencies like the #NewMexico Dept. of Transportation, can work against them.

Nevertheless, tribes like the Stillaguamish, the Upper Skagit, the Santa Ana Pueblo, the Burns Paiute, and the Salish and Kootenai are taking the lead on connecting habitat and reducing the harms of American highways and interstates.

@ArrowbearMoore Haaland has not taken a clear public stance, to my knowledge, and I'd be interested to know what's going on behind the scenes, too.

From an AP story last year on Thacker Pass:

"Haaland, whose department oversees Thacker Pass, said that while she supports the right to peaceful protests, her agency is in favor of the mine because 'the need for our clean energy economy to move forward is definitely important.'”

@ZillaMon @1dalm Maybe they just think "THOSE PEOPLE" should roll over and stop resisting.

Somebody has to pay the price for white people's eco crimes. And it sure as hell isn't gonna be white people!

@ZillaMon Thank you, but this take belongs to Dr. Doliwura Zakaria.

@krystyna The empire wants you to believe you only have two options. Indigenous people know both options are empire.

Toastie,
@Toastie@journa.host avatar

@krystyna Also 'liberals can abuse people however they want because at least they're not fascists' is an unbelievably common shit take.

And it's why so many Indigenous people don't trust liberals.

Toastie,
@Toastie@journa.host avatar

@krystyna For you these might be purity tests. For Indigenous people, this is the unchecked pillaging of our lands---again.

Your democracy does not serve us.
