need ~30 lbs of cobalt, so the US needs millions of tons for the EV boom, which will continue to push 1000s of Black women, men, and children into pits and tunnels.

Of the 255,000 Congolese mining for cobalt, 40,000 are children. They might work for around $2USD/day.

No one knows how many have been killed in the mines.

The Congo has over 90x the amount of cobalt in the U.S., where people are exploited for it.

This needs to be shared widely. The cost of these so-called items that are going to save the environment are wrecking havoc on the places with the resources. Why are they living in poverty when they have what we want? And why are children doing these jobs?

1924: an man hunts a deer on treaty-reserved land. Gets criminally convicted.

The ruling said tribal nations are not sovereign or independent, "the Indians being mere occupants of the land.”

The hunter died decades ago. The family member who continued his case died in 2007. But a tribal attorney kept pushing to get the unjust, demeaning conviction reversed.

On Thursday, nearly a century later, the state Supreme Court admitted it was wrong.

How could anyone speak these words without their head exploding before they even finished the sentence?

The point of solar panels is not to ensure "solar profitability," but to make for a greener, better world. Its profitability is only justified insofar as it moves us towards that goal. If we want to switch to renewables, then sometimes we're going to have surplus, because of how renewables work. This is well known and discussed ad nauseam. If that makes power markets unstable, then the problem is with markets, not with there being too many solar panels.

As extractive “wildcrafting” has become popular, supposedly treaty-protected access to ancestral gathering sites has diminished, says Michelle Week (Sinixt, Arrow Lakes), who runs x̌ast sq̓it, an Indigenous foods farm near .

“You have the privilege to go out and gather these things without fear of harassment, but my community, who’s native to this place, we just don’t have that luxury.”

@Toastie It's happened with salal & many other Indigenous wild foods. When I used to work in local parks here - I'd have to stop/seize & report illegal harvesting from white folks who ignored signs to not harvest. Outside of parks, in more remote areas, it's very difficult to enforce ongoing exploitive over harvesting of edible & medicinal plants, for profits by non-native peoples. Some selfish settlers have decimated several longtime native wild food gardens here for greedy purposes.

In Cheboygan, Michigan, there are no local journalists to report news.

Local residents are turning to Facebook for local news. (Personal note: argh, Facebook isn't a reliable or trustworthy resource to learn what's happening in your community.)

The issue with training AIs on the internet is that AIs don't understand humor or sarcasm and thus will take sarcastic answers as truth, Anyway the best way to deal with a flat tire is to make Mustard Gas. Here's how you do it!

Sigh.

So look.

The "press" and the "media" are not the problem people. That so many of you think this is by design.

The press and the media are supposed to be the 4th estate.

The watchdogs of government.

The intelligence wing of the people.

Corporate media is a problem, yes, but the press as an institution are not.

But because so many people remain ignorant to the role of the press, I've no doubt that we will be without them in total sooner rather than later.

inquiline,

@Adam_Cadmon1 There's something going on where too many people here have essentially a superiority complex and it leads to weird judgments & contrarian takes that are not fully thought out. IMO.

Yesterday @majorlinux made an observation after years of raising money for charities through gaming: "The fact that charities exist because Capitalists horde all the wealth leaving the working class to pick up the slack by begging one another to donate while simultaneously providing the Capitalists to make themselves look good isn't great." Today I will talk about the nonprofit industrial compelx (NPIC). 1/8

Police shot and killed a student in Wisconsin after receiving a report of someone with a weapon while class was in session.
https://www.jsonline.com/story/news/crime/2024/05/01/police-kill-mount-horeb-student-to-prevent-school-shooting/73533915007/

Infoseepage,
@Infoseepage@mastodon.social avatar

@peachfront @w7voa What was the source/origin of the initial report? Did the student in fact have a gun on him? Was it drawn at the time he was shot by police? What attempts were made to de-escalate the situation? Were body cameras worn and do they have footage? These are all VERY basic questions.

For all we know, this could have been some poor 12 yo kid getting swatted by school bullies. We do not know, because the media has not asked and received answers to extremely basic questions.
