Just some wannabe,suppose I could do better. Middled aged Canadian, child of immigrants who can't relate to them. Attempting every day to be a good person to all walks of folks and life. I don't always succeed. Love all things computer related, admirer of engineers professional and amateurs especially. Hoping your motivation rubs off on me.

I think i want to get into incident response and recovery.. i don't know much about it, any advice or resources that I can read up on?

Toxic_Flange,

@C8H10N4O2 oh what timing, thanks!

briankrebs, to random

There's a huge disconnect for me rn in the IT space. Companies love to talk about an increasing deficit of smart, talented and skillful people available to help defend the cybers. Welp, a lot of those people are somehow now seeking gainful employment bc they've been laid off. Which is just nuts to me given the sheer scale, resources and effort our adversaries are throwing at everything now.

p.s. AI isn't going to fix anyone's security problems. If anything, it's going to compound them by orders of magnitude (at least in terms of data governance).

Toxic_Flange,

@briankrebs For all the headlines, take a look at the aftermath. Who goes to jail, who actually pays out a significant amount to the people affected? How's the stock price 6-12 months later? There's no consequences from a profit PoV for poor security practice and incidents.

Tim Horton's gathered too much private info, and the penalty? For everyone who used their apps and had their info taken, got a free coffee and doughnut..thats the price of individual info being slurped up.

once a week i drive my wife to a dance class, and i have an hour to kill before she’s done. i head over to a local thrift shop and dig through books and piles of junk. last time I found a dead TI-84 calculator that got rebuilt.

today, I found Red Mars.

i wish I could say that when I was in grad school that Taylor or Heidegger or Bachelard or Freud had left the most profound shift in my understanding of the world.

but no, for some reason it was this book that did. Robinson’s portrait of a settler-scientist society in extreme conflict from within and without, provides this reflection of where we’re at now - here, on Earth. i know of no fuller anthropological study of life on another planet that rings truer than this one.

so now, I have one very grateful hour every week where I can sit in the car and read. 😃

Toxic_Flange,

@vga256 this was one of my all time favourite series and authors. I go back and read this from time to time. The Science in the Captial series is another that stood out to me as well.

So I currently work for an "ad-tech" company. I don't care for it but it pays the bills.
Anyways I've been sitting through some of the presentations on their data collections part and suddenly I realized that the Malware/ransomware industry and the online advertising industry are similar.

With the industry, there are groups that specialize in writing the exploits, another that specializes in its delivery, another group that deals with routing the C2 traffic, another that will do the tech support to get the pay off (sales???) etc etc.

When delivering an Ad to your browser, there's not just one or two groups you deal with, there are sooooo many. One group that speaks with the client, one that creates the advertising campaigns, another group that deals with metric gathering, another that deals with the delivery and when and how to target it (C2??, TDS), Ad exchanges (bitcoin exchanges?) , a specialized group that deals with the CDN (TDS again?)..

All this.. and one of these is legal :)

Rick Howe, a beloved Nova Scotia radio host, has died, sources say.

Howe retired in 2021 after a nearly 50-year career as a reporter and broadcaster.

He was best-known for hosting “The Hotline" on CJCH as well as “The Rick Howe Show” on CityNews 95.7, formerly News 95.7.

@Rasta Oh sad news.. Frank and now him.. both people I respected.

So, should I avoid async rust or not?

Toxic_Flange,

@drwhax I'm curious too!

I feel like there have been more IT workers laid off in the past year than there were IT workers 10 years ago. Totally unscientific observation

Toxic_Flange,

@jerry i wonder how this compares to the dot.com bomb era in the early 2000's..

Toxic_Flange,

@jerry also makes me miss f*ckedCompany :)

@janbeta I'm looking to get a replacement printer cartridge for the MPS-801, if you don't mind, where did you find the new ones that you mentioned in your video? Is there a specific model printer or type thats compatible that you might know of?

Toxic_Flange,

@janbeta Thanks! Apparently this is a compatible one, cheap enough to give it a shot :)

Been spending a couple of days with and I can see why people would prefer to use VMware.. the UI/UX and doing some basic things like using an NFS mount point for ISOs is counterintuitive. Why must iso's live under a fixed directory structure?! This is dumb.

Hah oh wow to replace the ink in this think you just take out the “reinker” instead of replacing the entire thing.. so many third party replacements used to be out there.

image/jpeg

Toxic_Flange,

@paulrickards Yeah like a small sharpie to transfer the ink :) I'd spend some time trying to open it up and see if i could re-charge it but the ribbon itself has got holes worn in it, making it a lost cause IMO.

from the MPS801 manual.

Toxic_Flange,

@paulrickards yeah it’s pretty cool. I’m still gonna save it. Maybe I can get a third party replacement and transplant a ribbon. I love that the ink in this is a kind of blue/purple as well.

Made a riser for the desk. Getting there :)

Toxic_Flange, to mathematics

Trying to get a 10 year old do study and practice for his math quiz at school for multiplication of 2 digit numbers. Whatever method they're teaching at school confuses me.. Thank goodness for Kahn Academy!

What was so wrong with old math? damn kids and their new maths.

Toxic_Flange,

@meejah fair point.. i like the kahn academy method but this particular 10 year old seems to get confused about which method to apply in which situation, single digits vs double vs triple. I honestly have no idea about what they're teaching at his school because they don't really send home the methods with the homework equations. SO most of the time i'm struggling to figure out the method they taught, to re-enforce the lessons for homework.

Toxic_Flange,

@meejah yeah that’s exactly it! For me it was rote memorization of some things and applying one method to all the variations . I get that’s not for everyone hence all these new methods .. it’s the “throw it at the kids and see what sticks” method :)

Toxic_Flange,

@Rajiv @da_667 yeah but how is that different from “licensing” Microsoft enterprise products, Orcacle which charges per cpu core or Redhat, IBM etc etc

Just checked the second replacement keycap set I ordered and it is flawless (replacements for the keycaps with the slightly tilted printing are provided). The incorrectly shaped "@" keycap from the set I showed in my recent video is going to be replaced by Jim, too. It’s already in the mail. Jan is happy. 😊

Toxic_Flange,

@janbeta Hey Jan, would you happen to know if the full replacement keyboard ever came about? do you have a link to where we can watch for news about it?
