Since 1970, there has been a:

49% decline in marine life

50% decline in insects

66% decline in wildlife

69% decline in vertebrates

83% decline in freshwater species

Birds: 60% decline in Ireland in 50 years

Lions: 90% decline in Ghana in 40 years

Forest elephant: 60% decline in 12 years

Leatherback turtle: 95% decline in 20 years

SEI whale: 50% decline in 20 years (47 left)

Earthworms: 33% decline in UK in 20 years

Mammals:

3% wildlife

97% humans and livestock

Is this progress?

YakyuNightOwl,

@gerrymcgovern Looking at population statistics, the western world was reacting to genocide in the 1940s like a forest full of lodgepole pines after a forest fire. By 1970, the largest generation of consumers in history were choking on their own tailpipes.

99.9% of jobs do not require urgency of any kind, really they don't. We've all had a boss who acts like someone will die if we don't hit some made up deadline by people who don't even do the job. No one needs their meal 1 minute faster or the paperwork before tomorrow morning. Your time off actually doesn't need to wait. Sometimes I think about how legitimately bad most businesses are at time management and hiring, and I wonder how they manage to exist at all.

YakyuNightOwl,
@YakyuNightOwl@mastodon.world avatar

@RickiTarr Live radio was 24/7 urgency, but it doesn't exist that way anymore.

Newspapers don't have the 24/7 urgency of unmovable print deadlines like they did in the past.

There's a lot of hurry out there, but like you said, it isn't as if everyone is part of a Coast Guard rescue, or an EMT rushing to a car accident.

Would you rather be alone in a Space Ship with Darth Vader or the Queen Alien from Alien?

Please support the your answer if you feel like it.

35 years ago, a friend and I went to his house and his father met us at the door. He commanded us to sit on the couch and went to the kitchen to get us something cold to drink.

CNN was covering the events at Tiananmen Square, and the peaceful protest was being met with unspeakable violence. We sat together and spoke of past state violence like Yugoslavia in 1968.

Mark Zuckerberg was 5 years old, and was not raised in a culture that treasures democracy, so exactly nobody was surprised by a jog.

@YakyuNightOwl@mastodon.world avatar

How do you remember the events of 1989?

How many white techbros do you need to see doing this shit before it's kinda obvious how they're wired?

Rest all the souls who perished for democracy.

@darcher You don't have to love your neighbor if you've got to curry favor with a country where starvation is a weapon.

Ethnonationalists and Zionists don't care about Oregonians. It's probably time to reciprocate. We don't need white supremacy playing games with our food bank.

Never made the connection that actor Allan Arbus was married to photographer Diane Arbus.

YakyuNightOwl,
@YakyuNightOwl@mastodon.world avatar

@billyjoebowers One of the lived experiences that made his role as Dr. Sidney Freedman so believable. Such a sad story.

Although he will be forever in the shadow of Diane, Allan was a brilliant photographer too.

In happier times, the couple was part of a New York circle that included Garry Winogrand.

@billyjoebowers Such a damn good actor, one could be forgiven for not knowing.

That's a lot easier for his flock of adorers. They just have to take the Staten Island Ferry to Fulton St and the 2 or 3 train to the Garden.

Or the LIRR/Metro North to Grand Central,the shuttle and the 1/2/3.

All hell will break loose. https://www.cnbc.com/2024/05/30/trump-guilty-crime-felony-what-happens-next.html

This was a fun one, so let's do it again. What is something you've learned that seems unlikely, even though you know it's true? Here's one I think about a lot:

Sight, while being something something many people are born with, is not an innate ability, but something we learn to do. People who were born blind or were blind for a long time, who get sight, have to learn to see.

Major League Baseball wasn't desegregated to a bare minimum of a single Black player on the roster of every team for one game until Elijah Green debuted on July 21, 1959.

Major League Baseball didn't have a Black umpire work a game until Emmett Ashford debuted on April 11, 1966.

Major League Baseball didn't have a single Black manager lead a team until Frank Robinson debuted at the helm on April 8, 1975.

MLB would like fans to forget the pace of progress. Negro Leagues stats are a token move.

YakyuNightOwl,
@YakyuNightOwl@mastodon.world avatar

The one benefit of MLB accepting the statistics of the Negro Leagues is how three women can finally be inducted at Cooperstown.

Peanut Johnson, Toni Stone, and Connie Morgan are all eligible now without hearing a litany of patriarchal excuses.

If the institution of baseball wants to be taken seriously as a game for everyone, a good start would be inducting these three pioneers.

"A League of Their Own" was for "their own" alone. These women were forced to play with the men and earned a plaque.

YakyuNightOwl,
@YakyuNightOwl@mastodon.world avatar

@msquebanh Too many people are comfortable with the fact that Black women were excluded, and the lack of outreach to HBCUs while trying to grow the game is rather familiar.

Mo'ne Davis went to Hampton while everyone scrambled to promote Melissa Mayeux. Sometimes the game loudly tells on itself.

Peanut Johnson shared the story of going to an AAGPBL tryout, and being turned away.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iw-ACi9TPBc

The AAGPBL was segregated wire to wire, and no amount of pinkwashing changes those facts.
