Annals of awesomeness in interface design: Ultima III has an "A–M" menu for commands that start with those letters

Of course there's an "N–Z" menu too. How else would you check your ... [squints] ... ztats

Unity (the game engine) is just really ruining my week. This program is crashing in a way that the actual Unity process (standalone exe or the Editor) just crashes, hard C crashes inside Unity's closed source code. I'm reduced to turning objects on and off and seeing the minimal set of objects to cause a crash, but I still have no idea what [my] C# code was doing before [Unity's] C++ code crashed!

I wish I could get, like… a trace of every unmanaged to managed transition. Every C# entry point.

As there is some interest in the game itself, here are some screenshots from "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai: Across the 8th Dimension" for Apple II, ©1985 Adventure International. The company had many successful releases on a number of platforms and had moved heavily into licensing deals with major films including Marvel. They went bankrupt the next year.

Note that no one has yet preserved an original disk of the Apple II version of "Buckaroo Banzai". We have low-quality, defaced disk images of the cracked version that was passed around back in the day. If anyone has an original of this game and would be willing to let me borrow it for, like, 10 minutes, let me know.

@a2_4am@mastodon.social avatar

Apropos of nothing, "Buckaroo Banzai" has one location that is a beach (pictured) and uses the Red Cross Big-Red-Plus-On-White-Background mark on a normal lifeguard shack, which is a war crime.

Today is my birthday!

If you'd like to do something for me for my birthday, would you please reply to this with—or by other means send me— something with colors you liked? Like an image or a video or a link. Music would also be acceptable if it gives you a strong synesthesiac association with color.

If this request confuses you, here are some examples of images with colors I found striking [Artists: Laurie Barmore, Vian Borchert, Erica Aurahack]. But your reply can be whatever colors you like.

@mcc Happy birthday Andi. Here is a castle rendered in Apple II "hi-res graphics," which is a graphics mode that only barely "supports" color at all by exploiting quirks in NTSC (called "artifact color") to allow plotting six different colors, none of them gray.

If you've played a pirated version of Prince of Persia 2, there's a really good chance you've played the pre-release version which is a lot more difficult that subsequent releases (which also have their own issues).

Pressing ALT+V won't display a version number in it, but instead just the title "PRINCE OF PERSIA 2" will appear at the bottom.

I have decided that Adventure Replay will have a screensaver mode (like Total Replay). But since the games don't have built-in demos like arcade games, I am adding hooks to each game to take commands from an external text file, then writing scripts where you die as quickly as possible.

I got an untested SyQuest 88MB removable SCSI drive and some 88MB cartridges are coming soon. I had one of these in the past so this scratching a retro itch for me.

Anyone have modern experience with them? How likely is the drive to work? Do they always fail over time, have known issues, etc?

@mcc AFAICT it's the same list as you would get in Explore > People, but I agree that it feels much different to have it injected into the home feed.

The thing that even I forget — because I mostly use modern tools for developing and emulators for testing and I turn off "authentic" drive speed — is that 8-bit computers were terribly slow because media storage was terribly slow, way out of proportion to how those things evolved just a few years later.

I said this in 2018 when we first released Pitch Dark, and it's still true: if you have a real Apple II, the best bang-for-the-buck upgrade you can get for it is a mass storage device.
