Pleased to announce that I will be Quantifying Nebraska at North Bay Python next month, where we'll try to find protects in your dependency graphs that might be in need of a little help.

(Also, I hear tickets went on sale today. Come for the cutest conference in Petaluma, stay for the friendly barn cats.)

@chrisjrn Nevertheless, I like their old stuff better than their new stuff.

The coolest thing about Rust Nation UK 2024 confirmed all my worst fears about software supply chain security (and then xz made things worse) https://tim.mcnamara.nz/post/746402277639782400/supply-chain

@timClicks @carol I'm working on something kinda like this, albeit more for suspicious new crates than large ones. (You know, in amongst the 20 other spinning plates I'm trying to keep spinning.)

Practically, though, resourcing is a huge problem here โ€” it's one thing to say "this should be audited" and quite another to actually have it happen.

The pkgx.dev thing was doing the rounds yesterday and today, and it turns out that it's related to something else I've seen this week, which is tea.xyz, which tries to incentivise FOSS contributions with magic beans cryptocurrency.

Anyway, it turns out that if you make that incentive, you also make an incentive for spammy PRs and hamfisted attempts to fork and typosquat known packages to get some of those magic beans based on hopefully tricking people into installing your fork rather than the upstream.

At least the crates.io typosquatting detection seems to be doing its job. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Rust is participating in the Google Summer of Code!

https://blog.rust-lang.org/2024/02/21/Rust-participates-in-GSoC-2024.html

If you're eligible as a student or FOSS beginner, I highly recommend looking into applying for this, whether for Rust or another project. I took part in GSoC in (gulp) 2007, and it was totally worthwhile. You get experience, the FOSS world gets code, and you get paid. Win, win, win.

The Rust Foundation is hiring an Infrastructure Engineer to work on... well, shockingly enough, Rust infrastructure.

A fringe benefit is that you get to work closely with @jdno. He's great! (You also get to work less closely with me; YMMV on that one.)

Details: https://foundation.rust-lang.org/careers/ (make sure you click through to the actual vacancy, since it includes a bunch more detail on the specific position)

Willow TV had a nice, subtle snow effect on their Christmas "watermark". (I'm not sure it's a "watermark" if it's an animated, opaque overlay, but whatever.)

Their New Year's version isโ€ฆ less subtle.

Can't imagine this being annoying at all over the next few days.

A clip from a cricket match, featuring an animated firework display behind the channel logo in the top right corner. It is not small.

OK, so there's this toot from @mhoye showing that Bing doesn't think Australia exists: https://mastodon.social/@mhoye/111455407450469108

What's not in that toot are that there are follow up questions you can ask about Australia's non-existence!

And now I weirdly feel bad for an LLM, because all the answers start with an apology for the previous response.

A Bing Chat response, which starts with: "I apologize for my previous response. It was not accurate and | should not have said that. Australia is a real country and it does exist." It goes on with citations to describe some evidence that Australia does, in fact, exist.
