@ada@blahaj.zone

I'm an Australian woman, based in Meanjin / Brisbane, but in love with Argentina. In a previous life, I was a Trans activist, runner, and RollerDerby player. Now that we are all "post" covid, I feel like I'm still somehow finding my feet, and working out what I want to keep from my old life, and what I want to add to it! I have the feeling I will never get a final answer :)

I'm co-admin blahaj.zone and lemmy.blahaj.zone.

My photography can be found at @ada https://pixelfed.au/i/portfolio/Ada

I can also be found on matrix at ada:chat.blahaj.zone

Updates on testing MilkTea app for

  • I've found how to drill-back from a post, reply or notification, and open up the whole thread
    2 taps only 😇 and suddenly feels like "game-on" in terms of possible usability

  • UI: You can load a background image and alter the posts opacity on top etc

  • A lot of things are accessed in the UI via swiping sideways, which isn't always obvious so I'm playing around a lot (still haven't found Blocklist maintenance for example)

  • I have two Calckey accounts working on it, fine so far

An example: Trying out how a Quote (-boost) flows between two Calckey servers

social.calckey (me) <-> blahaj.zone (another)

  1. As the creator of the original post (social.calckey) I get a notification 💡 that I have been Quote-boosted (from blahaj.zone)

  2. The layout looks pretty decent too

Any comments and replies back to the Quote-boost (blahaj.zone) go against that, not my original Post so I don't see those comments, but at least I got visibility that I was QB-ed in the first place

As trans 🏳️‍⚧️ this kind of functionality can matter in how it is implemented. TERFs and nutters dogpile us on the birdsite in 95% of cases this way. Also I feel it's a simple courtesy in general anyway to know if one is Quote-boosted - on Mastodon I always manually add in the original poster, for exactly this reason

ada,
@ada@blahaj.zone avatar

@Natasha_Jay Of note, on Calckey you can also choose to watch the quote post (or any other post you like) which will give you notifications when people reply to it.

ada,
@ada@blahaj.zone avatar

@Natasha_Jay @jo Not really. But the tl;dr version is "everything under the Appearance and Behaviour tab of the settings menu"

📰 BIG NEWS! 📰

The Misskey family of server apps just overtook Peertube to become the #2 most used platform on the Fediverse!

  • Peertube: 310,548 accounts
  • Misskey + forks (including Calckey): 315,377 accounts

While Mastodon currently dwarfs the Misskey family by orders of magnitude, Misskey is growing at a faster rate -- particularly in Japan.

But a fork of Misskey, Calckey, is beginning to gain traction in North America and Europe!

@jens @atomicpoet One thing we don't see people talking about with mobile IDs that concerns me is the impact it will have on people's incentive to run instances.

At the moment, an instance is a smaller community in a larger network. It has a flavour of its own, and it has value as an entity. That gives people incentive to maintain them, even at cost to themselves.

But in a world of fully mobile IDs, there will be less people incentivised to provide infrastructure, and it will be harder for the people that do to fundraise to help cover costs.

ada,
@ada@blahaj.zone avatar

@jupiter_rowland So in that setup are the instances federated with each other or do you need to clone on to an instance to interact with it?

maikelthedev, to random

I think I'm going to stop calling it calckey and call it properly, Hajkey.

Give credit where credit's due.

ada,
@ada@blahaj.zone avatar

@Uraael @maikelthedev The majority of the QOL changes live in the Appearance and Behaviour tabs of the settings

Uraael, to random

@ada @maegul @jo You love to see it. ☺️ It definitely feels like Calckey has crossed a wee threshold.

I schlepped an exploratory tendril onto your server yesterday curious about some of the improvements your instance has over default Calckey (I'm a tweaker/fiddler on a cellular level). HajKey mentions Blahaj as well?

ada,
@ada@blahaj.zone avatar

@jo @Uraael @supakaity @maegul It's probably more accurate to say Kaity maintains the fork and lets me hack at it sometimes :P

jo, to fediverse

I saw @Uraael mention how their engagement had really skyrocketed with the influx of folks from at calckey.social and they posted a screenshot of their activity graph. Thought I'd heck mine, too.

Yeah, that's absolutely crazy. 😅

ada,
@ada@blahaj.zone avatar

@Uraael @maegul @jo It got a bit interesting on lahaj.zone as well. We gained about 15 users, but look at this usage data....

20,000 outgoing posts a day a month ago, 100,000 outgoing yesterday!

ZoDoneRightNow, to random

is there a way to change how much of a post is shown by default (so that I don't have to click show more on so many posts)?

ada,
@ada@blahaj.zone avatar

@RiversideBryan @ZoDoneRightNow That's a blahaj.zone only feature at the moment! It hasn't been PR'd back in to the main Calckey branch

Sorry for all the novice questions. A pointer to docs that I can RTFM will work.

I saw under settings there was an import function that mentioned importing posts.

I had read that one of the biggest problems with moving instances was"leaving your posts behind".

Is that not the case with moving to CalcKey?

Thanks also for the warm, new instance welcome.

ada,
@ada@blahaj.zone avatar

@pseudonym Basically, any posts that are included in your post export from your mastdon instance will be imported to your Calckey account

ada,
@ada@blahaj.zone avatar

@pseudonym As @Natasha_Jay pointed out though, Mastodon currently doesn't include image/media in the post export, so those won't be uploaded

Any good clients? Firefox seems to work fine for mobile, but I onboarded to with @Tusky and recently @apps but it seems like the CalcKey web client has more/different features. Wondering if there were recommended clients.

Thanks

ada,
@ada@blahaj.zone avatar

@Natasha_Jay @Uraael @pseudonym My biggest issue with Milktea from memory was that it wouldn't display full reply trees and context. You had to dig post by post up/down the reply chain

fluffery, to random

how do you use calckey in mobile? webapp or not

ada,
@ada@blahaj.zone avatar

@fluffery The PWA is too feature rich for me to consider using a 3rd party app

Right so by having an antenna with the content of the local timelines of Fosstodon and Hachyderm I have a window into the Engineering world.

Now....what other worlds do I want to have a window into...? Is there such thing as a fitness or sports instance?

ada,
@ada@blahaj.zone avatar

@maikelthedev @jcrabapple @supakaity

@jo, you can help with this. I don't have an account on calckey.social. Is this feature available there? I was sure that it had been PR'd in to the main branch, but maybe I'm wrong?

@ada@blahaj.zone avatar

Ok trans fediverse! I need your help!

I'm a straight trans woman, and my timeline is largely sapphic! It's time to even the balance a bit!

So if you've got any queer/trans content that my straight but queer ass might enjoy, please spam me with it! Memes, people/hashtags to follow, stories, I don't care what it is, I'll take it all :)

@rysiek @alberto_cottica @edgeryders Last I saw, this was going to be a one way federation, with AP content getting pulled in to Discourse, but not the other way around.

That was based on a discussion I saw on lemmy several months ago though. I'm not sure if it's still accurate

bloodwrites, to random

Next in my explorations: what the heck are 'clips'?

ada,
@ada@blahaj.zone avatar

@bloodwrites Clips are saved posts. Similar to bookmarks, but you can sort them in to different clip lists, and can share them with others

kainoa, to random
ada,
@ada@blahaj.zone avatar

@kainoa As far as downsides, it doesn't handle image captions, the way it does media in general is painful, and its moderation functionality isn't good enough.

As a platform, it simultaneously feels mature and dated

ada,
@ada@blahaj.zone avatar

@kainoa I wouldn't say limited. It's not designed with AP in mind, but aside from media and captions, it is fully functional. It even handles subject/summaries as distinct from content warnings, which is very uncommon.

Ultimately, it's a microblogging platform comparable with the others on the list.

However, it might be an idea to try it before adding it.

But I tell you, if timelines and groups in Calckey worked like they did in Friendica, I'd be so over the moon.

ada,
@ada@blahaj.zone avatar

@kainoa Here's an example of a relatively heavily threaded comment tree

What's interesting though is that whole comment tree is treated as a single unit in your home timeline, so when a reply happens, you see the whole tree object in your timeline. It's collapsed by default, but can be expanded. And it is only at one place in your timeline at any given time, so if multiple people are replying to different chains, or there is an ongoing conversation, you only see it once as that tree object, rather than having a heap of individual replies scattered in your timeline
