Not linking directly because I don't want to shit on projects I believe are genuinely trying to make the web better, but every time I see a post about "the small web" or a more "humane" web or whatever that includes phrases like this about content: "created without the motivation of financial gain" I sigh so deeply lol

I am begging ethical web enthusiasts to understand what an extreme privilege it is to spend time working on something without worrying about money

This kind of thing has been around the block for a bit -- the reality in my opinion is that "programming ability" is simply not something we've defined and possibly not a single thing. The many decades of interest in predicting programming ability have sometimes succeeded at pushing against our stereotypes that it is math associated (as this work), but "math ability" is ALSO a fraught measure. It's important to bring a lot of context to the prediction of ability...

@grimalkina as someone who covers science papers, the term "natural language ability" is also . . . weasel words to me. the same way computer comfort and skill has been linked with those who just had computers from childhood, it's wild to call something natural that you're measuring in the late teens or adulthood (using the MLAT).

One thing I’ve struggled with a bit in my career is, I’ve been a generalist who is really good at a very large number of things instead of a specialist who is very good at a small number of things.

That wasn’t always a positive thing early on, but at a senior level it is absolutely something that differentiates you.

I’m exceptionally good at explaining computers to people, and people to computer people.

@skinnylatte this is so interesting!! Thank you for explaining it this way. Have you ever worked in the hierarchies of unions? I don't know firsthand but am curious how this compares with places where you're like "Assistant Tier 1," "Assistant Tier 2," etc. with a set pay scale and skills.

question for people outside the u.s. (or people here who've lived elsewhere!):

do you have a version of instant jello (jelly? gelatin dessert? haha), and/or instant pudding or custard made by adding milk? or anything else similar?

my local mexican supermarket has a brand with flavors like horchata and mango, and i just put some coconut jello (with frozen fruit!) into the fridge.

@KissAnne @RandyNose that's so cool, thank you for sharing! i think i may have @'d you before to say the only finnish word i know (kissa! cat!), from a friend long ago and her very finnish mom (from michigan here in the u.s.)

eugene levy also visited for his travel show! he was with farmers in the rural north and it was beautiful. i'm from the rural u.s. but finland puts any other "rural" to shame!

What’s cuter than an oak tit? Oak tit fledglings of course! There has been an absolute explosion, the pine is full of them and it’s delightful to watch them. The oak tit parents really have their hands full feeding their very smiley demanding little ones, it looks exhausting 😅

Where does the idea of "rising above it" come from, this idea that folk on the receiving end of nonsense are only deserving of sympathy if they are somehow unaffected by it..? It seems christian, turn the other cheek and all that, so am guessing it's a relic of some patriarchal crap, you're supposed to take whatever is dished out to you and not fight back.. Surely that can only benefit those who hold the balance of power! 👎🏻

I keep seeing people I like on here posting and needing to add big disclaimers that you shouldn't shame them for using Google services. Jesus, my Gmail account is 20 years old, of course I don't want to change it. And the alternatives people suggest for other services are almost always clunkier and/or more technical. That decision absolutely isn't easy at all. If you're shaming people over this stuff, shut the fuck up.

This black cat keeps bothering me and my cats. It acts like our backyard and the small forest close to us is its territory. My cat makes friendly "kur" noises to calm him down but he follows us everywhere we go. He even run behind us on the sidewalk.

i'm overall okay, but i've been having a tough time lately. the kind of thing where you look back and are like "oh yeah okay. i've been struggling to do things, sleeping poorly, etc." and the thing with the admin over the weekend exacerbated it all so i'm having a Struggle One today. just trying to relax, while also being . . . so tired i can't sleep. i love my large adult human body. also trying to get more steps intentionally and throughout the day. if you're having a hard day, i see you.

a few weeks ago i was run off my previous instance because the man who owns it decided it was against the rules for me to call an extreme may december romance with a freshly 18 year old "gross" -- that's it. i used the word "gross" and that got me in trouble that spiraled into a full mod meltdown

I'm listening to an otherwise fine book where the main character has had relationships with men and women but conclusively rules someone else out if the mystery when she sees she dated a woman -- she couldn't possibly be jealous of a man, she likes women! This potent mix of biphobia and bad story management is hurting me personally

This event with Black Girls Code sounds neat: virtual workshop for ages 10-13, using Scratch to design a dodgeball game. I'd encourage any Black parents or relatives to piggyback with your kids, because Scratch is a really wonderful learning tool for all ages -- I've taught it to humanities grad students as well.
