I've seen a lot of people quoting Tracy Chapman, and she deserves all the love, but the key verse is this. Props to Luke Combs for keeping it in, unlike some other people who've covered it.

I always hoped for better,
Thought maybe together you and me'd find it.
I got no plans, I ain't goin' nowhere,
So take your fast car and keep on driving.

alexisdyslexic,

@capntransit yeah, I always found this song haunting and depressing, in a good way. And then I got into Urbanism, and learned more about red-lining and highway expansion.. next level of depressing.

Better for New Yorkers, and doesn't allow for blatant misuse. Litter baskets are for candy wrappers...not whatever this is.

OM fuckin' G. I just went to meet with my state Rep and a gaggle of Fox Republicans were there. (An hr at the library once a month). They tried to make me go first because of course they planned to monopolise this dudes time for the whole hr. I said no I wanted to see what they were going to say. I think understand their whole tackic it's SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM

The we're 'concerned' about open meeting law. They were convinced that the state legislation was doing buisness 'illegally'.

update the Rep was happy enough that I showed up that he posted on his fb account and Instagram account. I don't he did that for the Republicans..

RealJournalism, to LSD
@RealJournalism@mastodon.social avatar

It turns out that the QAnon Shaman is one of the biggest promoters of #LSD and #Psilocybin as an alternative to gender transitioning. And Jordan Peterson is another big promoter. I'm all for legalizing these substances, but if God (or Flying Spaghetti Monster) made you transgender, that should be between you and your doctor. And you need to consult your doctor before taking such substances, because of potential fatal chemical reactions with drugs you're already taking. https://www.assignedmedia.org/breaking-news/qanon-shaman-chloe-cole-laura-becker-promote-lsd

The Regional Plan Association comes out against the NY State Department of Transportation's anticipated proposal to widen Route 17 in Orange County:

"To achieve the State’s climate goals, to promote choices across the state, and to ensure a healthy future, we must say no to any highway widening, including along Route 17. Investments in safety, transit, bicycle, and walking infrastructure where appropriate, and commitments to alternative land use patterns are essential."

https://rpa.org/latest/lab/evaluating-the-route-17-highway-widening-project

alexisdyslexic,
@alexisdyslexic@urbanists.social avatar

@capntransit I <3 Metropolitan Planning Orginizatione/Regional Plan Associations. If you can participate in yours in any way, I highly recommended it. They were created to stop DOT's from expanding everything into highways. They don't always have the political will to do so but that's where you come in.

alexisdyslexic,
@alexisdyslexic@urbanists.social avatar

@capntransit oh, in MA both RPA's and MPO's are federally regulated & mandated, not nonprofits. They essentially the same thing but it depends on population density. Like any orginization how effective they are depends on who participates. But they were created by Congress as a tool to allow local voices to have a say in highway funding. They are essentially the response to the highway protests of the 60's and 70's.
I've talked to all of them in my state through my work.

alexisdyslexic,
@alexisdyslexic@urbanists.social avatar

@capntransit They are all public meeting and I sit as a bike rep on mine (we have a pedestrian rep too) even if they don't make you an official voting member (which I am). You can at make public comment, respond to surveys, attend meetings, etc. My experience is that they are desperately trying to engage non-car owner and trying to get feedback. Of course this varies agency to agency but most of the staff I've talked to is young and started their role in the last year/five years.

alexisdyslexic,
@alexisdyslexic@urbanists.social avatar

@capntransit have you listened to the Big Dig? (a podcast, it's amazing) essentially congress created MPO's to deal with highway expansion. Does it always work? not absolutely not when ever one on staff is windshield bias. I'm finding the biggest hurdle around here are the local DPWs & sometimes MassDOT (they are so large tho it really depends on what dept and who your working with).

alexisdyslexic,
@alexisdyslexic@urbanists.social avatar

@capntransit i'm not saying it's all sunshine and roses or they haven't been bystanders to our car-centric design. I'm saying it's an avenue for public engagement. And unfortunately one that most advocates don't know about. Often they are often begging for input and they can't lead the charge. The municipalities have to (at least that's how it's set up here) and my understanding that's true is other parts of the country too.

@MsHearthWitch 100% I like it for the same thing. Also I have induction cooktop and all the recipes be like 'preheat your pot with oil & rise and chop ur onions'. Or boil the water then start chopping. It only take 2 mins for water to boil on my stove.

RT @estherxlwang Eater NY has published stories in recent days warning of the threat that congestion pricing poses to Manhattan restaurants.

But how real is that threat? @k80way spoke to restaurant owners—and did a lot of math—to find some answers.

I just had to turn a coworker down today for work lunch invite saying 'yeah i'll take a rain check until were over the current holiday spike..' an hour later I found out that the third person on the invite is currently in isolation because their partner currently has covid from international holiday travel. 😷

Great: Local news mag show Chronicle just aired a piece on Northampton MA, and featured the city’s planned redesign of Main Street for ped and bike safety!

Greater: That proposed redesign includes the sweet double-tree-row portico for bicyclists!

alexisdyslexic,
@alexisdyslexic@urbanists.social avatar

@bikepedantic also Northampton is an ultra-progressive university city. They have Smith College. (One of the 5 colleges in the area) Easthampton (next door) has a private highschool that costs $90k a yr.

Not to rain on your parade. I'm really excited too, it's just been a lot. There's a ton of other awesome in the pipeline for the Pioneer Valley. Holyoke should look like this in 5+ years too. The progress being made in Hadley is also impressive.

Now if we could just get Springfield on board.

alexisdyslexic, (edited )
@alexisdyslexic@urbanists.social avatar

@enobacon @bikepedantic we finally actually started talking about vision zero in our last meeting & the MPO just won $1 million for planning. So maybe we might actually do something ??

I actually mentioned Jersey City in the last meeting. And they said they had read about it.

alexisdyslexic,
@alexisdyslexic@urbanists.social avatar

@enobacon @bikepedantic Northampton is actually removing parking spaces (which is what the business store owners are up in arms about) and started charging more per hour on Main St then in the parking garage (one block away) the stuff people are saying tho... someone said in a meeting 'parking garages are abilest' (there's 4 handicap parking spots right next to a sky ramp into the shopping center).

The parking garage is .75 cents an hour and never full. Usually have 200 hundred extra spots.

alexisdyslexic,
@alexisdyslexic@urbanists.social avatar

@enobacon @colby @bikepedantic there's like 6 giantic surface parking lots + the parking garage. Within a 5 block radius.
If they are driving around looking for parking it's because they are lazy bones.
Unfortunately Northampton has the most happening downtown for a county of 20+ rural towns so everyone drive in with their Ford 150's to go to dinner. The Hill towns their called.

Another new blog post - I remembered the National Transit Database before the end of the year!

The big winner of 2022 is New York Waterway, which earned $1.43 for every dollar they spent. That makes sense because you can usually isolate on the upper deck. They charge $9, but they run every twenty minutes, and they know how to load and unload passengers efficiently, unlike the Hornblower crews who run the East River Ferries!

@capntransit Peter Pan has activity been blocking trains to Western Mass for 20+ years. Fortunately 'blue' Massachusetts finnaly got a dem in as governor (for nearly the first time in 30 yrs) And our new transportation secretary is awesome. It's rumored that Baker (last governor) was friends with the owners of Peter pan. Anyway all that to say I wouldn't be suprised if they were lying. And low and behold we're supposed to get more train service this year (2024).

alexisdyslexic,
@alexisdyslexic@urbanists.social avatar

@capntransit on the upside Springfield to Boston is supposed to increase to 3x a day this year with a goal of 8x a day. Currently it's once a day.

alexisdyslexic,
@alexisdyslexic@urbanists.social avatar

@capntransit they probably did! It was down to one every other day during the pandemic.

The housing crisis (and congestion on the Pike) is pushing the state to improve rail conditions & frequency. You can still find a ton of afordable homes in western mass & the Berkshire were the only place losing population in MA as recently as 2019. Trains could help with all of those problems.
