Wooden removable bollards put in places to protect human life.

Metal permanent bollards put at a corner of a building to protect property.

This is what "Platinum Bike-Friendly" looks like at UC Davis.

alexisdyslexic,
@alexisdyslexic@urbanists.social avatar

@meganL @cycling wow, I applied to go to UC Davis and thought it was cool because it was the 'bike school'. Reading ur posts it's more like oh, it's warm and flat so people bike, which is not the same as a biking utopia.
I ended up at Santa Cruz. Hilly and cold in comparison.

alexisdyslexic,
@alexisdyslexic@urbanists.social avatar

@meganL @cycling the best in North America is probably Montreal. But Not Just Bike just made a clap back video about how poorly Montreal stand up to European cities. I don't think we have a good infrastructure anywhere in North America.

But I think we're at an inflexion point and a lot is going to be built out soon.

@RustyRaven @briongloid i've seen versions of this on my family and my mother wanted me to fit into this role when my dad died.
My cousin was adopted for this reason inmind basically an indentured servant to her adopted family. She had 4 older siblings with a ton of money that could easily afforded to put mom in a nursing home. Instead she had to do elder care until my auntie passed away from Alzheimer's. No family of her own, worked in retail for a day job to support herself.

alexisdyslexic,
@alexisdyslexic@urbanists.social avatar

@RustyRaven yeah we villianize nursing homes but I've yet to see a situation where elder care turns out to be an actually a healthy relationship between the adult children and thier parents.
I want it work, if I had a better relationship with my mother I'd do more if it.

Also this lenses given more meaning to the 'old maids' of previous centuries. We're they unmarriageable? or did thier parents intend on having a full time caregiver in thier dotage and 'groom' them to become caregivers?

alexisdyslexic,
@alexisdyslexic@urbanists.social avatar

@RustyRaven yeah i'm the youngest daughter but I don't get along with my mother and never have and now I live 3,000 miles away with my own life.

My cousin was the youngest 'daughter' in airquote because she was adopted for this task in mind. Also there was no family home. They were renting, in Tahoe which is super expensive.

My neighbor did this and she did get the family home but i'm pretty sure her brothers still have say in the matter even tho they didn't do any work.

alexisdyslexic,
@alexisdyslexic@urbanists.social avatar

@RustyRaven we do have Society Security but this only works if you have a paying job that tracks your hours. And I've heard of programs attempting to address all these issues. In WA State there's a 'home health' program where these family members can take a certification course and get paid minimum wage for doing the work they are already doing for free. And they get basic training on first aid & elder care.
The US is really 50+ different countries in some ways ( as the name itself implies).

alexisdyslexic,
@alexisdyslexic@urbanists.social avatar

@fastfinge they tried to brick everything a few years ago and stop supporting older models but they got so much pushback that they walked back thier statement.
And it's very, very difficult to use or sell anything on the second market. I had a used sonos and they refused to help me make it work without some mysterious orginal factory pin number.

I'm taking the Amtrak's Vermonter into NYC. The ride goes back and forth between wetland, rivers, and urban decay. It's beautiful and depressing all at the same time.

Boat dock somewhere along the Long Island Sound
Wetlands along the train tracks in Connecticut. I saw at least 2 snowy egrets in the water.

Not only do EV owners save money for themselves, they also help thousands of Americans save money on energy bills by balancing demand on the electric grid. Consumers will save even more as more people drive EVs and the U.S. produces more renewable energy.

I don’t recommend replacing things just for the sake of it, but EVs are the smart way to go if you’re looking.

@CatHerder @TonyStark for the life of the ownership they are cheaper because less maintaince and fuel. Consumer Reports has articles on this. Also you can by used.

Also all cars and car infrastructure are expensive. But that's another conversation.

alexisdyslexic,
@alexisdyslexic@urbanists.social avatar

@GreenFire @TonyStark @CatHerder for the record folks, I didn't say eliminate cars, I said eveything about them is expensive. And I live in the US, own a hybrid and work in transportation advocacy.
In my state alone we loose one person a day to road deaths and it cost the state 6 billion a year property damage. ( the second figure i'd have to dig around for but i'm pretty sure I read that in the last year)
Like I said, it's a different converstation.

alexisdyslexic,
@alexisdyslexic@urbanists.social avatar

@TonyStark @GreenFire @CatHerder yeah, I think the 'War on Cars' is about the same as ACBA. Pithy shorthand for a nuanced conversation about the fabric of our society.
Personnally I'm looking forward to the the Aptera going into production. Solar-powered 3 wheel that supposed to have a 1,000 mile range!

Dentist Office: 1 block away
Auto body shop: 1 block away
3 coffee shop & 8 restaurants within 5 blocks

My go too are; frozen dumplings, dolmas, canned mussels, canned chili, and the all time classic: Mac & cheese.

@capntransit I live near the Vermonter train line. I wanted to just take the train up. But it only leaves once a day :(

Would have had to leave Sunday and not return till Tuesday to make it work and rent a place to stay for 2 nights. Which I've done before and the cheapest I could find in non-eclipse times was $200 a night.

@pluralistic While I'm enjoying Lost Cause for the story, biggest best take-away is mention of using a skillet to warm up left-over pizza.

Damn, game-changer. (Assuming one plays games with pizza. I just eat it.)

The cast-iron skillet I found by the side of the road and refurbed fits three slices.

Denver people!

I'm writing a piece for Mother Jone about how Denver is subsidizing the price of buying an e-bike ...

... and what impact these programs (several other cities are doing 'em now too) have on urban mobility

I'd love to talk to someone in Denver who bought an ebike using Denver's subsidies

Any Mastodon people know someone who fits that bill?

If so, tell 'em to ping me -- love to hear their experience!

I'm clive@clivethompson.net, feel free to forward my email
