Talk rejected for iosdevuk this year. Slightly surprised; I thought this topic would be a banger. Oh well, i guess sufficient other people also had great proposals.

Well this is fun! I finally got my Apple Vision Pro in Glasgow, but it turns out it's not actually my Apple Vision Pro.

It's in the right box, but it's a 256GB model, not a 512GB, and the serial number of the device doesn't match my order. I have to assume that the store in San Francisco mixed up devices when they were packing them. And somebody in SF got a free upgrade to a 512GB one.

I suspect they would say “just bring it back”, but that's kinda hard now that I'm 5,000 miles away. Fuck.

@amyworrall@mastodon.social avatar

@jamesthomson the purchaser of this Vision Pro is in FUCKING SCOTLAND!

Going to rejoin Apple, work my way into the Photos team for iOS, add a top level button to rotate a photo, then quit the next day knowing I have improved the lives of billions.

amyworrall,
@amyworrall@mastodon.social avatar

@jamesthomson I added such a button to Workplace Chat. That was my last act before leaving the team. Same vibes (but many fewer users!)

Product idea: a button. You press it, it lights up green. It turns off again at midnight. Nothing else.

Useful for things like “have I taken my meds today?”

Has anyone here used a smart plug to detect when an electrical appliance has finished doing something?

For example, I want to plug in my rice cooker and get an alert on my phone when its electrical use drops to zero.

Ideally using something like - but I'm not fussed.

(Looking for people with direct & personal experience; I know how to use Google. Also, not looking for your criticisms of .)

amyworrall,
@amyworrall@mastodon.social avatar

@Edent back at uni 20 years ago, some friends built that for their house, so that whenever the kettle finished boiling it’d message all the house inhabitants that they should come down for a cup of tea.

You know I don't ask for favors very often, but if you have a friend who REALLY loves crosswords and has possibly ever complained that there isn't a great iOS app for solving puzzles from MULTIPLE SOURCES, then I would appreciate if you spread the word. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/black-ink-crosswords/id312142427

@danielpunkass @hollie Do you have any good sources of English cryptic crosswords?

Some people might question how I justify buying a first generation Apple device with unproven utility. Honestly, I don't know, I just feel like I have to have it. It's one of those times in history.

amyworrall,
@amyworrall@mastodon.social avatar

@danielpunkass if you want it, and you can afford it, why would you need to justify anything else?

TIL It’s not possible to transfer money between bank accounts in the US. This feels like one of those ‘lobbyists bribed politicians to make the customer experience worse so they can sell an unnecessary solution’ things.

Edit: I did not foresee this being such a thing. Please stop explaining banking systems, I think I now know in minute detail exactly where this post is and isn’t completely accurate. Thank you.

amyworrall,
@amyworrall@mastodon.social avatar

@RobW wait, what? How do you send someone some money?

amyworrall,
@amyworrall@mastodon.social avatar

@cocoaphony @krzyzanowskim @RobW @rene Not disagreeing, but how can knowing someone’s bank account number let you defraud them? You can’t take stuff out of the account just by knowing that, right?

Just used my 12 mini to pay with Apple Pay at drive-thru, and the worker was so amazed at how small it was she showed it to all her coworkers lol

amyworrall,
@amyworrall@mastodon.social avatar

@rileytestut when you say showed it to her coworkers, she didn’t end up holding your phone did she? The phone should never leave your hand when paying!

amyworrall,
@amyworrall@mastodon.social avatar

@rileytestut ah, I’m used to them holding it out on the end of a stick, so it is right by your car window.

As an Apple shareholder, I wish Apple wouldn’t push for services revenue. How much better of a company would they be, if it was mostly about selling cool devices that everybody wanted to use? Would they make less money? Yes. Would they still be insanely profitable? Also yes!

@schwa @jamesthomson @Migueldeicaza

My thoughts on what is “fair” would be:

  • Apple must make a way to allow any developer to build and sign apps without any form of approval or business relationship with Apple.

  • they must also allow any user to install such an app.

@Migueldeicaza @schwa @jamesthomson

I was saying what I think should be the case. My opinion is that after a business crosses a certain amount of market control, they should be compelled to be more consumer friendly than it would otherwise be in their interest to be.

If anyone wants any 1:1 tuition for iOS interviews at big tech (coding or system design interviews), message me. I work at Meta (of course I won’t be sharing any confidential info, but the principles are fair game!).

“Apple’s commission will be 27% on proceeds you earn from sales (“transactions“) to the user for digital goods or services on your website after a link out (i.e., they tap “Continue” on the system disclosure sheet), provided that the sale was initiated within seven days and the digital goods or services can be used in an app.” - and there it is. 27% commission to Apple if you use an external purchasing system. Not unexpected, but wow.

https://developer.apple.com/support/storekit-external-entitlement-us/

amyworrall,
@amyworrall@mastodon.social avatar

@fahrni They need to be smacked down by regulation. It’s not in consumers interest to allow apple to get a cut here.

amyworrall,
@amyworrall@mastodon.social avatar

@fahrni yeah, I get that apple see it that way. They’re not gonna change out of the goodness of their hearts. That’s why I think a regulator should tell them “no, you’re not entitled to any money or control here”.

Can people who post links to Apple News please add the hashtag, to make it easier for those of us who don’t subscribe to it to mute those posts?

Here’s a weird little app I’ve been working on. It’s a calculator, but instead of choosing digits, you choose dice.

Why? That’s a great question! 😅

It’s been a lot of fun putting together so far, though!

3D Touch was one of those times when (very expensive) hardware was put into production, and software was forced to produce something—anything—to showcase it.

The 3D Touch strain gauge was impressive. It measured grams-force so accurately that you could use it as a scale. Problem was, humans aren’t that good at applying precise amounts of force, especially when operating a bar of soap single-handed.

In fact, having force sensitivity turned out to be detrimental to the UX because people would accidentally press too hard and trigger something unintended. It made operating a touch screen device harder for many people, especially those with less-than-excellent fine motor control.

amyworrall,

@drahardja it was good for moving the caret in a text field. You could move then start a selection using only one hand, unlike now.
