The EU is abandoning its Mastodon project.

I had thought the main way Mastodon could develop into a major social media was by attracting bodies who want to respect EU law and similar regulation. If even the EU institutions themselves don't prioritise it, then that's another nail in the coffin.

@Loukas What gets me is that posting to Mastodon doesn't even require huge effort on their part. Many of us on Mastodon alone are here for a reason. We lose out if the institutions fuck off to commercially-run platforms (which abuse our personal data)

I was critical of the Cass Report earlier, talking about how discounting studies that weren't double blinded RCTs was bad form. Apparently Dr Cass has responded, saying that '"obviously" young people could not be blinded as to whether or not they were on puberty blockers or hormones because "it rapidly becomes obvious to them [...] But that of itself is not an issue because there are many other areas where that would apply"' https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-68863594

Rhetorical question. And she is, of course, wrong about acupuncture. A placebo devised to test its alleged effects was devised some years ago and is described in the book "Trick or Treatment" by Edzard Ernst and Simon Singh.

What is this curious looking device imaged recently by Mars rover Perseverance, which looks like a bunch of circles encased inside a larger circle, which is surrounded by a circular string of beady circles?

It is PIXL, the Planetary Instrument for X-ray Lithochemistry instrument, which is used to measure elemental chemistry of Martian rocks. PIXL is mounted on the rover’s robotic arm, along with other instruments such as SHERLOC and the drilling/abrading tools.

I speak cat. Have always had at least one. When Gavin died over the summer, we brought home Edmund to ensure we maintained the requisite population of 3 housecats. Edmund is...different. He likes the other cats. He wants to be with people too. Always is right there with you or rubbing against your leg (especially while you're navigating stairs!). So he likes everyone in the house. He just does not know how to interact with other life forms that he is not pouncing and actively disemboweling. 1/2

    En ce moment sur , des admins viennent de bloquer définitivement quelqu'un pour avoir critiqué WP su Mastodon. Blocage décidé en moins de 24h, avec 4 votes sur un superbe quorum de 6 admins.

    Une admin qui s'oppose à cette mesure en vient à devoir écrire la phrase incroyable:

    "Comme il a été décidé que comparer les lesbiennes aux skinheads sur le bulletin des admins ne valait aucune sanction par coherence aucune sanction non plus pour des propos hors WP."
