In a sense, I am a beekeeper, hence the username.

I work in the rail industry trying to secure all the things: tons of legacy infrastructure which is now being networked.

Never forget: there is no cloud, there is only other people's computers.

I break shit for fun. Sometimes I even fix it afterwards!

They say that "life is what happens while we're busy making other plans", and they're right; tot i que la vida m'ha allunyat de Catalunya, tinc moltes ganes de tornar a casa.

An NPR reporter collected samples of raw milk from 4 farms in Texas, and asked a USDA-authorized lab to test for bird flu. The lab refused to do it, because the farms wouldn't give them permission to test, even though permission isn't required. Wow.

@luckytran Sounds like they should name and shame the lab, and then give the samples to one who will.

Fun demo of the difference that galvanizing makes. The left stack of nails are bright finish, where the right stack are galvanized, so the zinc kept them from rusting when I left them out overnight

RIP Laurence Victoria Taranto Mercier

My mum passed away on Thursday 25 April 2024. She was found on Monday 29 April. She died in her bed, in her sleep, and didn’t suffer. I don’t remember when I last spoke to her. Probably over a year ago. The last time I wrote about her, 8 months ago, to put into words that I had finally given up hope to get along with her, we had stopped speaking to each other 6 or so months prior.

Ha

If only my knowledge of EU law had the desired impact this fast every time 🙂

My father wanted to pay a EDF French electricity bill from a Belgian bank account, and was told that this was not possible because the bank was outside France

I formulated a stern email to EDF for him, in French, stipulating this was not allowed as a reason within the Single European Payment Area (SEPA), and within a few hours they relented in a grovelling email!

May it serve you (and your father) well.

Trying to help a friend get from Madrid to Paris 8 June. And I want to 😭

€122 for the best timed TGV train to Paris €97 is the cheapest
Cheapest flights from €43
Other flights €54 - €74

apicultor,
@apicultor@hachyderm.io avatar

@jon Yes, but one of those choices is going to be fucking misery, and the other one is going to be beautiful views, free internet access, and a picnic which can contain a bottle of wine and a corkscrew.

apicultor,
@apicultor@hachyderm.io avatar

@jon Don't forget to add a few euro in Madrid and at least twelve in Paris to actually get back into the city.

If you are booking very close to departure, then the price isn't great either way.

Did you look at Madrid-Lyon via Renfe and then a Freccia or Ouigo from there to Paris?

this applet is written idiomatically and with no modification of the core USB framework (using the abstractions every other applet is using, rather than direct access to libusb or something), in a single-threaded CPython 3.12 asyncio event loop

Trenitalia seeking more business in France

Good trains. Sensible company. Thoughtful offer. I wish them well! And some international trains - to Genova and Madrid - are being considered, as well as operation of 16 carriage trains to Lyon

Great trains, too.

Wouldn't it be embarrassing if FS started serving Paris-Madrid before Renfe? Yikes.

apicultor,

@jon AFAIK Renfe has been waiting for authorisation from the EPSF, which issues same on a sector-by-sector basis.

They're dragging their heels to maintain SNCF's monopoly on the route as long as possible.

3 - Lithuania 🇱🇹 - 4 Towers, 2.7m people, 1.48 per million
4 - Macau 🇲🇴 - 1 Tower, 0.7m people, 1.43 per million

suspect a hard short across 12V0 rail on the GPU, but need to check. but too much back pain to carry on with diagnostics today.

4 offers shown to me on the homepage

You're offering me a reduction card (pic 1) that's not valid on your OUIGO trains (pic 4), and that OUIGO offer sounds like something Ryanair would do

And pic 2 is trying to sell me Flixbus, although you also sell BlaBlaCar Bus (that's ex-SNCF), but do not sell Flixtrain (in Germany)

April release of the Pixel boot chain firmware includes fixes for 2 vulnerabilities reported by GrapheneOS which are being actively exploited in the wild by forensic companies:

https://source.android.com/docs/security/bulletin/pixel/2024-04-01
https://source.android.com/docs/security/overview/acknowledgements

These are assigned CVE-2024-29745 and CVE-2024-29748.

apicultor,
@apicultor@hachyderm.io avatar

@GrapheneOS Has the Pixel 5 received (or will it receive) the fix(es) for CVE-2024-29745 and CVE-2024-29748?

apicultor,
@apicultor@hachyderm.io avatar

@c @GrapheneOS I'm still getting updates on my Pixel 5, just not as often.

Low-level updates (like drivers and firmware) for EOL devices are not available anywhere because they are not provided in source form, so no other OS is going to offer them either.

I would stay on GrapheneOS... and I am.

apicultor,
@apicultor@hachyderm.io avatar

@c @GrapheneOS If you look through the GrapheneOS release notes, you'll see that the Pixel 5 is still being updated, but not as often and not as completely.

I plan to upgrade to the Pixel 9 when it is released this autumn, or the Pixel 8 if the delta between the 8 and 9 doesn't justify the extra cost.
