@aral I'm looking to move off of wordpress and was looking at Kitten.

The amount of documentation is truly impressive.

Would I be right in assuming kitten could take the place of wordpress (if i export all pages / posts to a plain text format)

@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@david That sounds like a much better idea :)

Let me know how you get on and ping me if you run into any issues :)

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@david Sorry it’s all in tutorial format and in the readme. I’m working on a separate site and that’s going to have a reference guide too :)

Cached US Kindle giveaway: 10 copies of @ursulav's THE SEVENTH BRIDE, which is a lovely retelling of Bluebeard. (I've been spinning the random book picker until I see books I have an upbeat association with.)

I'm a bit distracted right now, so it's hard for me to write things about it, but it is good, as are all of the author's classic story retellings. You should read them all, I think.

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@kithrup Clicked out of curiosity — this might explain why :)

(I’m in Ireland, by the way.)

@cferdinandi They don’t offer it to under 80s, so effectively, yes :)

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@cferdinandi Logic? You presume too much :)

(You can’t even pay for it. The easiest option is to drive to Belfast and pay for it in the North. It’s mind-blowing.)

1980s: Personal computers! So you don't have to use a mainframe! Independence!

2000s: Web services! So you're dependent on a handful of mainframes! Annoying if one is offline, but you can still get stuff done.

2020s: AI! So you're dependent on a single mainframe that serves everyone world-wide! Too bad if it goes down.

So! Many! Kittens!

(Going to record a demo of the new interactive shell – REPL to some – and multi-page Settings this afternoon, just planning it out now.)

Oh and is that me creating and calling web routes interactively in the REPL on a live server? Why yes, yes it is.

Jason Fried from 37Signals announces a “web-based books” product, which I must admit does sound intriguing, even though I already made my own custom book serialization site with Eleventy + Buttondown. Sounds like business books is their main use case, but still, good idea. -> “Workbook […] They have covers, they can have title pages, they can have picture pages, and they can have text pages. Each book gets its own URL, and navigating and keeping track of your progress is all built right in.”

@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@ricmac Yeah, no thanks. Not buying anything from “no politics in the workspace” / “DEI is bad, actually” 37Signals.

Duck Duck Go is down because Bing is down.

(Also, you saw the recent AI stuff, right?)

Folks, I know… I use Duck Duck Go also but remember they have venture capital. Enjoy it while it lasts (or let’s fund and build alternatives differently that aren’t temporary businesses with profit motives and exits but commons-owned institutions working for the common good).

🇦🇺 Australia: COVID keeps killing more people every month than flu does in a year.

“In other words, there were three times as many confirmed Covid-19 cases as influenza cases,” Adrian Esterman, professor of biostatistics at the University of South Australia, told TND.

“And the death rate associated with Covid-19 was about four times as high as for influenza.”

He said it was “completely crazy that face masks are not mandatory in all health care, hospital and aged-care settings”.

@DenisCOVIDinfoguy @auscovid19 Funny, I can get a flu jab here tomorrow but if I want a Covid booster, I have to wait over thirty years.

(Boosters only available to over 80s in #ireland.)

It remains fucking absurd that the U.S. sold off most of its rail lines, so Amtrak has to pull over and let freight trains pass, as those are the companies who bought them. I’m sitting here stuck outside of town for the last 30 minutes because of this fuckery.

After four and a half months and almost 34,000 stitches, I’ve finished my cross-stitch 1-bit version of Hokusai’s Great Wave. It’s big, 25”x 17” (pen in the first photo for scale). Thanks to @hypertalking for letting me use his wonderful original 1-bit art.
