Book 27, 2024: Hunter in Huskvarna - Sara Stridsberg
Short-story collection by Swedish writer. I picked this up on a whim in a bookshop’s closing-down sale, and I’m glad I did. Many of the stories are in different styles, demonstrating her versatility. It’s great to discover a new writer whose work you want to explore further. @bookstadon

Book 27, 2024: Your Love is Not Good by Johanna Hedva. Best book I’ve read this year, this incendiary novel follows an artist who becomes obsessed with a model, builds a career, fucks up their career, reflects on trauma, whiteness, Berlin, kink, dogs… So good.

day 1 of wearing Mitsouko.
right after spraying, it gives rich old woman because the initial powdery notes are similar to Chanel no. 5. they have similar notes, but Mitsouko is much warmer and spicier.

@reginasbread I was once working in an office in London during a disgustingly hot sticky summer. No air con. I nipped to the loo and sprayed myself with a Penhaligon’s lime cologne. When I got back my colleague sniffed the air, and said, approvingly: “Good idea; insect repellent.”

Sir Peter Alexander Baron von Ustinov, CBE, FRSA würde heute seinen 103. Geburtstag feiern.

@NatureMC @Emathion CBE is Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. Basically a category of Knighthood, meaning he was Sir Peter.

@arratoon@beige.party avatar

@NatureMC @Emathion FRSA means he was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

@NatureMC @Emathion Ustinov was one of the great raconteurs who would often be on UK TV when I was a child, just talking marvellously. Kenneth Williams could be relied upon for that too.

Book 26, 2024: 561 by Katherine Heiny

Turns out this was a short story, and not the novel I took it for when I opened ed it on my phone’s Kindle app. No matter, it’s funny, as you’d expect from the American writer, and deals with a woman helping her husband help his ex-wife move house. Enjoyable. @bookstodon

@Jaden3 Sounds like a plan. (I ran for 7km, did lots of cooking, watched two bike races on TV. I think you’ve had the better idea.)

I have no idea why people are so obsessed with train seats that are like 2 and 2 with a table between them. those are literally the worst, in my opinion. I prefer not to be seated vis a vis strangers and not to arrange my legs between theirs.

@reginasbread Nor bang your knee on the table leg…

Someone I know lives in Cape Town. Because of fires, animals’ habitats have been destroyed, meaning they are moving closer to where people live.

The other day her daughter walked into the kitchen to find a baboon sitting on the countertop, happily eating one of her bananas.

Book 25, 2024: When Women Kill: Four Crimes Retold - Alia Trabucco Zerán (tr Sophie Hughes)

The writer of The Remainder charts four infamous murders in Chile throughout the 20th Century, looking at the women’s motivations for murder, and how they were treated by the media in a patriarchal country. Another excellent release from the always reliable And Other Stories. @bookstodon

Book 23, 2024: Requiem A Hallucination – Antonio Tabucchi

This slim volume by the Italian writer who spent a lot of time in Portugal was written in Portuguese, and features a narrator walking around Lisbon, and other places, looking for memories and ghosts, including Fernando Pessoa. It’s a dreamlike novella, and features a lot of food.

It’s the first of his novels I’ve read, and now I need to go deeper.
