People keep bringing up the very tired “Linux on the desktop” meme to dismiss the Fediverse.

But a meme is just a meme.

In the real world, Linux dominates.

Your phone? Probably Linux. Your car’s infotainment system? Linux. Your router? Linux.

Chromebook? Linux.

Windows has a Linux Subsystem too.

Linux has won.

The “Linux on the desktop” naysayers don’t even realize it.

The Fediverse should be so lucky.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

Truth be told, the Linux paradigm probably will be what becomes of the Fediverse.

What will happen is that most people will use the thing that gives them familiarity and comfort.

Which is fine.

But soon we’ll see the Fediverse begin to unlock things we didn’t think possible.

Weather trackers will use it. So will video games. It will be used on millions of websites.

Most people won’t know because it will simply power everything.

@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@Turbo_Steve The desktop isn’t even the device most people use nowadays. That honour goes to the smartphone, which is dominated by Linux (Android).

So why dwell on the desktop?

But even with the desktop, I already mentioned Chromebooks and WSL.

It doesn’t matter if people don’t know they’re using Linux.

How the hell have *key apps been so under the radar for 9 years?!

(At least here in the West.)

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@renwillis Misskey, Calckey, Foundkey, that family of apps.

If you want to try one, here’s a server:

I just embedded a search engine into a post.

How did I do that?

By typing the following line into a post:

Calckey [search]

Take a look for yourselves here:

How does anyone not get excited about the Fediverse when they discover they can embed a search engine - with pre-populated search terms -- into a status update?

Did Twitter ever let you do that?

No, Twitter didn't even let you edit a post!

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@thisismissem You do retrieve results, however.

And it's awesome that this can even happen.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@husku I can think of many reasons I might want to do something like this. For example, encouraging someone to go find out stuff for themselves (e.g., LMGTFY).

But the point is, you can do it!

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@pjakobs This is not a web frontend for Mastodon. is something quite different.

There's lots of other things you can do with Calckey, such as animations inside a status update.

@chris No, Twitter became dead to me in March 2022.

I'm so glad Twitter is dying.

jo, to fediverse

I'm a bit fatigued atm, so I haven't replied to a thread I'm in with some of the .social mods about moderation and safety tools, but here a snippet of what I did have prepared to say:

So here's the rub, the fediverse will not let calckey.social get away with the same crap that they begrudgingly let mastodon.social get away with. You will be silenced and Fediblocked long before you get their leverage.

But we're absolutely not at that stage. This is not anything near the whole Pleroma and Gleason thing. It's far, far, far, far from it and I'd hate to think that my public raising of concerns as a neighbour of calckey.social would lead to any platform-based defederations at this stage.

It's real kick in the face to suggest that devs and mods don't care about safety.
Blahaj.zone is actively, not passively, moderated. Our front end admin @ada has decades of cross-platform moderation experience and she puts our safety first, while our backend admin @supakaity has been working to improve safety tools on our instance and many of the other enhancements we've enjoyed here have been PRd and merged into the main Calckey release. I will not stand silent while my friends are tarred as being part of an unresponsive or unconcerned platform, particularly when many of the issues are issues-at-large

atomicpoet,

@jo @supakaity @ada @kainoa @unattributed Adam F. Lawton is clearly speaking from a mastodon instance, and speaking from an experience he’s having on his Mastodon server.

I have not even seen the egregious posts that he’s referring to on calckey.social, and if I did, I’d ban whoever did that.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@jo @supakaity @ada @kainoa @unattributed By the way, speaking of Tucker Carlson, have you considered that he was a big factor in the Jan 6 insurrection?

Speaking as a Jew, watching that happen was one of the scariest situations I’ve ever seen in my life.

I don’t want that behind a CW because that allows people to ignore the threat of Fascism.

Your marginalized experience is not more important than mine.

The best way to explain is to imagine what would happen if (pre-Elon) fell in love with and they had a baby.

That baby would be Calckey.

Twitter + WordPress = Calckey

Let me explain... 🧵

atomicpoet,

@robUx4 What’s wrong with a PWA?

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@Catonauts Glad to have you!

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@robUx4 I know I’m biased but Calckey’s PWA blows native apps out of the water. As a bonus, it’s not tied to a walled garden.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@robUx4 Sure, it’s web-first. But here’s the thing. Mobile users probably won’t care about monkeying around with widgets.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@robUx4 I don’t pay attention to those things, and they’re low priority.

Especially when I can put this in a post:

Jack Dorsey hopes that Bluesky will be “temporary”.

How likely is Bluesky to actually be “temporary”?

@maegul @ActiveCultures But this isn’t my only account. I have great conversations with all my accounts no matter my following.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@maegul @ActiveCultures What it really is, if you don’t mind me saying, is that I’ve become accustomed to how things work here, and I’m willing to adjust to make stuff as easy to grok.

Generally, I try to discover how systems work, and how I can benefit from them.

@SrRochardBunson @ActiveCultures @maegul You are the Linux guy, though. Every day, in fact.

Linux is all around us, and we don’t even need to think about it.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@maegul @ActiveCultures Largely, I don’t think this or that platform matters. The real point is ActivityPub (e.g., “the kernel”, in your analogy), and every other protocol that makes this happen.

It doesn’t matter if someone doesn’t like Mastodon because there’s probably something else that utilizes ActivityPub that will be preferable to them.

Or maybe not ActivityPub. Maybe Zot or AT instead.

Point is, this is where social media is going.

is finally testing federation with "allow-listed servers".

They're finally taking the step of decentralization.

Many people will naysay this. But it's absolutely better that they move to decentralization than not do it.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@acjay @davidgarywood Have you tried ? It has the following feeds:

  1. Home
  2. Local
  3. Social
  4. Global

There’s also Explore > Featured which gives you the zeitgeist.

And there’s lists and antennas to follow stuff you’re interested in.

As a bonus, there’s “Channels” for participating in topical conversations.
