Some people think #Bluesky is “fun”. However, I find it anxiety-inducing and stressful. I’m not the only one who thinks so. A few autistic people say the same thing.
#Calckey seems “fun” to me because I can make it be what I need it to be. For example, it’s nice that I can create antennas devoted to my special interests.
@darnell@fediversenews That's pretty interesting. I know FediDB removes pawoo. And I don't think joindiaspora.com should be counted. It's reached end of life.
I do believe more #mastodon users should use #BlueSky there’s a lot that the team and users in general can learn from those in the #fediverse and clear up misconceptions
@mekkaokereke@supernovae@damonoutlaw For what it’s worth, it seems that folks on Bluesky are becoming more and more excited about decentralization. Which makes me happy. This is absolutely the way social media should go.
But there will be an unavoidable price. And that is communities will need to arise to do the moderating. And these moderators will probably be volunteers.
@supernovae@mekkaokereke@damonoutlaw This is true too, and I’ve noted that. But nevertheless, I’m having more conversations with people about decentralization, where Bluesky says they want to go, and the whole ecosystem that exists outside Bluesky.
Less people are hostile now than they were a few weeks ago.
@supernovae@mekkaokereke@damonoutlaw Yep, and the problem is that some people became religious about certain cultural practices, and that ended up with the HOA aspect Mekka alludes to.
For 8 years, Mastodon (mostly) had a culture that created a safe haven for certain marginalized groups.
Then in November 2022, that culture tried to enforce the rules and they suddenly no longer applied.
@supernovae@mekkaokereke@damonoutlaw Yeah, that’s something I’ve also realized. The longer Bluesky delays decentralization, the harder it will be once they decentralize.
Because the stark reality is that much of Bluesky’s community thinks they’re getting Twitter 2.0. And what they see in Bluesky now may not exist for long (if what Jack says is accurate).
As we’ve already seen here, decentralization is hard to instantly understand once it happens.
There are several members of the Black community that are working on their own implementations of Fediverse apps -- both server and client software. I've seen demos. They look fantastic.
I think it's important to boost what these devs are doing.
By the way, have you spoken with @darnell? He has a lot of expertise about different aspects of the Fediverse. He also runs a #Misskey server, and is also familiar with its forks.
I'm a bit fatigued atm, so I haven't replied to a thread I'm in with some of the #calckey .social mods about moderation and safety tools, but here a snippet of what I did have prepared to say:
So here's the rub, the fediverse will not let calckey.social get away with the same crap that they begrudgingly let mastodon.social get away with. You will be silenced and Fediblocked long before you get their leverage.
But we're absolutely not at that stage. This is not anything near the whole Pleroma and Gleason thing. It's far, far, far, far from it and I'd hate to think that my public raising of concerns as a neighbour of calckey.social would lead to any platform-based defederations at this stage.
It's real kick in the face to suggest that #Calckey devs and mods don't care about safety.
Blahaj.zone is actively, not passively, moderated. Our front end admin @ada has decades of cross-platform moderation experience and she puts our safety first, while our backend admin @supakaity has been working to improve safety tools on our instance and many of the other enhancements we've enjoyed here have been PRd and merged into the main Calckey release. I will not stand silent while my friends are tarred as being part of an unresponsive or unconcerned platform, particularly when many of the issues are #fediverse issues-at-large
