@atomicpoet I’ve already seen posts from you on calckey. You could have just moved and I never would have noticed. This is a cool feature to this newer user of Mastodon/Fediverse 👍
I don't want to dump on mastodon at all here, but calckey is what I imagined the fediverse microblogging platforms to be like before I checked them/mastodon out.
It's what you'd expect from OSS social media, right? Features, options, hackability, and fun.
Again, not to be critical, but mastodon feels like it's coming from a different place.
I got a #Calckey account and it seems pretty straightforward. I love the Galleries and would definitely use that. Is there a blog feature or some other way to present longer articles?
@atomicpoet@Are0h@fediversenews I just spun up a VPS (the $6/month one at Vultr) to test the new (to me) Calckey install scripts, and holy crap that is a time saver compared to what I had to do to get that running in December. I think I might even retire the Akkoma single-user if this performs adequately for my single-user needs at $6/month.
@atomicpoet@Are0h@fediversenews Anyone know if there's a trick to importing my followed user list? It doesn't appear to actually do anything when I upload it, and it was pretty straightforward when I did it a few months back. #Calckey#Migration
Some people think #Bluesky is “fun”. However, I find it anxiety-inducing and stressful. I’m not the only one who thinks so. A few autistic people say the same thing.
#Calckey seems “fun” to me because I can make it be what I need it to be. For example, it’s nice that I can create antennas devoted to my special interests.
@atomicpoet@fediversenews#Explore section could be more vivid and versatile. By adding a couple deft options for sorting/showing recently viral/ish posts for those eagar to browse faved/boosted and yet unseen content, would decently compensate the complete lack of algos on feeds
@Ozzy On Discord, "server" is newspeak for "chatroom".
There are no separate Discord servers run by third-party individuals like Fediverse servers/instances. All Discord "servers" actually run on the very same central server farm owned and operated by Discord.
I guess the reason why they chose the term "server" was to appeal to the cool TeamSpeak kids who actually do run their own servers on their own machines.
So no, you don't get to choose which instance run by whom you join. There is only one instance, and it's run by Discord.
@atomicpoet but that's the point... Linux has won everywhere EXCEPT the desktop? It is the appliance-os of choice that can only ever be exposed to techies or hidden behind proprietary front ends. It leads on penetration, but only when it sacrifices the dream of democratising the desktop. Would this kind of 'backend success' be a win for the fediverse? Yes... But only if my 'digital footprint' can be nomadic and idempotent. It's VERY exciting...but a lot of problems still to solve.
@atomicpoet@ablackcatstail Gruber gets a lot of shit wrong; but it’s obvious that he was refering to the “petulant nannyism” and not the ability defederate.
@atomicpoet You have to understand where he's coming from.
He's very used to attaching himself to something, and then strongly identifying with that thing. This is of course true for the Apple stuff, but for the longest time it was Twitter, until it wasn't tenable anymore.
Twitter really suited him, since it very well matches his blogging style (quite something and add a few sentences of sometimes snarky commentary)
Twitter was definitely part of his "rise to fame" so to speak, since it amplified his blog posts, so being forced off the platform cannot have been easy.
I remember when G+ came out, and he made a single post on there pretty early, with a single sentence where he proclaimed he didn't enjoy it. Note that this was long before G+ actually failed.
So what do you do when your megaphone has been shut off? You go looking for another one. If your replacement megaphone has the property that it can be silenced by a nearby neighbourhood that doesn't want to hear it, you'll be upset.
What will be the tangible difference between the BGS that #Bluesky is making for AT protocol and a really well-connected relay operated with #ActivityPub?
@darnell@atomicpoet I believe the ATProtocol is exactly as complex as is required for what they are really trying to do. Which is, I believe, extend surveillance capitalism but escape the (already minimal) regulations surrounding it while outsourcing a bunch of the running costs.
