The best way to explain is to imagine what would happen if (pre-Elon) fell in love with and they had a baby.

That baby would be Calckey.

Twitter + WordPress = Calckey

Let me explain... 🧵

atomicpoet, (edited )
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

So like , has a timeline feed. Multiple timeline feeds, in fact:

  1. Home
  2. Local
  3. Social
  4. Recommended
  5. Global

It's got more feeds than Twitter. And you can make more of them through lists and antennas!

But Calckey is also like in that it has:

  1. Cloud storage
  2. Galleries
  3. Widgets
  4. Plug-ins
  5. Webpages

You can customize the look and feel. And, like WordPress, there's lots of wonderful admin tools!

Twitter + WordPress = Calckey

atomicpoet, (edited )
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

Again, this feed is -like -- but more futuristic, in my opinion.

If you are coming from Twitter, this should look very familiar to you.

Now this is how gets more WordPress-like because -- just like -- everyone who has a Calckey account can customize their theme.

And by customize, I don't merely mean select from a predetermined set of themes.

Nor do I just mean you can install one.

You can make your own Calckey theme!

You can make a Calckey theme both from a colour picker or through code!

This is very much like WordPress.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

Another way is like : widgets!

That's right, you can add your own widgets to Calckey's dashboard.

As you can see in this dashboard, there's quite a few to choose from:

  • Sticky notes
  • Notifications
  • Calendar
  • User list
  • RSS reader

And much, much more!

Calckey is definitely for microblogging -- but it's also kind of a CMS too!

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@kidehen Do you have Graze installed as an extension on Firefox or Chrome?

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@Mikal Yes, you can migrate your Mastodon social graph to Calckey. If you want to give it a spin, we have a server for you to try out:

https://calckey.social/

atomicpoet, (edited )
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

Another way is similar to is the cloud storage options.

Yes, like , Calckey can store photos and videos.

But like WordPress, Calckey can also host documents, audio, and even zip files on your drive!

How cool is that?

See screenshot.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@kidehen That's likely the problem. Try disabling Graze and that issue should probably go away.

It’s okay to stick with Mastodon.

is just a different way to be on the Fediverse.

Ultimately, Mastodon and Calckey can still talk to each other through .

Think of all the social media software that doesn’t allow conversation outside its walled garden!

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@oliphant You're right. Accessibility on Calckey is not as well developed as Mastodon, and something that the team is working on.

jerry, to random

PSA: if you like calckey on Infosec.town, you may also like akkoma on Infosec.place. The interface on calckey is nicer, but there is a working search on akkoma.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@jerry I had no idea you were hosting an akkoma instance! I may have to try it out.

Just heard a rumour that https://yarn.social is slowly rolling out support for .

https://yarn.social is a decentralised and self-hosted social media platform based on the Twtxt format that has a privacy-first focus.

To find out what it looks like, here's an example of a yarn server:

It's interesting to watch how other decentralized social networks adopt .

Can someone explain why I should try ? Isn't it, well, a lot like ? I barely keep up with one, why would I want two?

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@theotherotherone is actually very different from Mastodon. It has cloud storage, galleries, groups, tree comments, local-only posting, and so much more. The UI is also very different.

It’s okay to stick with Mastodon. Calckey is just another way to be on the Fediverse.

@wx1g @fediversenews Devs are working really hard on improving accessibility. Keyboard navigation is one feature they’re working hard on.

It’s pretty neat to hop on over to https://infosec.town and see a whole new community of people discover for the first time.

If you’re coming from Mastodon, the difference can be shocking!

I didn’t see this coming, but I’m pleased!

@jerry just announced that the infosec community now has their own server! You can join it here:

All the cool kids are playing with calckey. I didn't want to left out, so introducing: https://infosec.town! (a new calckey instance)

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@adamhotep @jerry It’s not based on Mastodon. is a fork of , which is the 2nd most popular server software on the Fediverse.

REMINDER: If you see abuse, don’t boost it. Report it instead.

Boosting creates more reach for the initial abuse, which makes it all the more worse.

Also, please give moderators a chance to respond to reports. During times you’re active on the Fediverse, some of us are literally sleeping 😴

Well, just confirmed that bans on @fediversenews work as they should.

A troll just tried to post here.

Their troll post doesn't display on @fediversenews, nor is their post boosted by the Group.

Even better, they're not notified when they are blocked 😉

Until comment controls come to Friendica, moderation here will mostly have to be reactive.

I will continue using venera.social for groups until a better solution comes along.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@jupiter_rowland How easy would it be to port that to Friendica?

atomicpoet, to random
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

Keep in mind why I opted for using Fediverse groups instead of hashtags: anyone can use a hashtag and therefore hijack it.

There’s no way to block someone from using a hashtag. However, trolls can be blocked from using a group.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@steve Yes, ’s channels are groups. Right now channels do not federate but that’s something that will eventually happen.

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@AbortTheGQPNOW @steve is basically a microblogging platform just like Twitter and Mastodon. However, Calckey has many, many more features than both:

  1. Photo galleries
  2. Groups
  3. Webpages
  4. Cloud storage
  5. Emoji reactions

Best way to understand it, is to try it. Here's a server that you can try out with:
