Some autistic people find making phone calls extremely stressful and unpleasant and will avoid them at all costs.

Please don’t try and force your communication preferences on others.

You can make phone calls without talking using real-time text (RTT). It sends text messages immediately as you type them, without requiring you to hit send. You can enable it under Accessibility settings.

I’m barefoot most of the time. If I need more protection I wear my flip flops.

I used to get made fun of in school for wearing them all the time. I can wear socks and shoes but prefer not to.

Does it bother you to wear things on your feet?

What martial arts were you involved with? I really like Kali.

Very cool! That’s a big list and a lot of training.

I asked a friend of mine who studied martial arts in Canada to help me find a school. And I got really lucky to find a place with fantastic training in a lot of different arts. I miss it. But I don’t miss the mullet hair style I rocked back then. 😅

Representation matters.

And that goes for autistic people too.

I tend to avoid social media. I don't even really know how to use it; but when I'm on here, I see that whole "community" thing that I'm not very familiar with.
Like people getting support when they're down and all that.
Sometimes I try to imagine
myself getting that.

"You are a great person."
"You are worthy of love."
etc.

But if it were me, I know it would just feel empty. How could any of you possibly know me?

This can't be just me, right?

You aren’t alone in your perspective. There are of course levels of knowing someone else, and spending time chatting with someone online and reading their thoughts and communications is such a level.

“Know thyself” is the beginning of wisdom according to the Oracle of Delphi which is hard enough. To truly know another person seems impossible to me.

It is for me. I get sleepy and relaxed after drinking coffee. Apparently that is a common reaction for adhd brains.

2/3 But...why? Because you or your loved one will be an undue burden on them you see. The cost for you to use their health services and to go to school is too much.

As @ajesusjoseph points out, "migration has always been a disability justice issue."

Some Autistic people feel much more comfortable around animals than people. I have always had a strong connection with animals.

Ableism at its core is discrimination or prejudice against individuals with disabilities. Ableism characterizes people as defined by their disabilities and inferior to the non-disabled.

Have you ever wondered why people in the autistic community will often congratulate someone on discovering they are autistic?

It’s because they finally understand why they have felt different from others their entire life.

Being autistic does not mean we have an illness or disease, it means our brains developed differently.

We are autistic our whole lives. We don’t “grow out of it”.

Many autistics have ADHD too. When you see the hashtag #AuDHD that is just a portmanteau of Autism + ADHD.

Since “Au” is gold on the periodic table, you will often see autism represented as a gold infinity symbol.

I see many neurodivergent people worry if they don’t identify with a trait someone else describes. Don’t. We are all different. And if I describe something that doesn’t resonate with you…that’s ok. It doesn’t mean you aren’t neurodivergent. 💛

It is easy to get overcommitted, which can lead to autistic burnout. Learn to say no to some things. That is exercising good self-care.
