RT @jsrailton: NEW: you can no longer view Twitter profiles via web without login.

Friction increases for disinformation research. https://nitter.nl/jsrailton/status/1674761053635264512

axoplasm,

@kevinrothrock well this was the last way I was interacting with Twitter, so to the extent that they got any advertising revenue from my eyeballs that revenue will now vanish

(usual caveat re: plural of anecdote ofc)

This side street route on 6th off of Terwilliger (south of i5) is maybe a bit steeper at the bottom than going around the curve, but usually seems more pleasant than riding uphill with that car traffic in a painted gutter (which seems to be often neglected, littered with leaves and branches from all of the trees) with poor visibility. #pdxBikes

axoplasm,

@enobacon I never understood why this shortcut felt (and took) longer than staying on Terwilliger. They start and end at the same place!

axoplasm,

@enobacon definitely that, plus its a steady grade

Can you see Mt. Hood from Fred Meyer Burlingame pickup spot 4 on Monday, 2023-06-26 at 14:00 PDT? (Yes.) cc @axoplasm (I should actually use spot 4 so I can get a better picture.)

Structural Engineers carefully calculate the yield vs buckling load and deformation of a specific cross section of a member with a given unbraced length, ensuring that 2x or 3x the worst-case loading won't kill anyone, but kill 40k annually in the us using pseudoscience to justify making it worse, are assuming that drivers will unfailingly deliver best-case scenarios or blaming enforcement for not ensuring compliance with their haphazardly placed signs and paint.

axoplasm,

@enobacon Induced Demand has explanatory power on par with Newtons laws but traffic engineers are all like “maybe THIS time we’ll beat it”

The new wallpaper feature in iOS 17 that lets you pick a person from your iCloud Photos and changes it hourly is gut wrenching when your teeny lil baby just graduated high school and you get these surprises every time you look at your phone

axoplasm,

@mathowie my youngest starts 5th grade next fall & I am already pre-emptively mourning the end of childhood. the way we planned our family means we’ve had 10+ continuous years of elementary school & “School Dad” is a p big part of my identity

my favorite bmx rider died yesterday in a motorcycle crash and as I search for any details, google, twitter, YouTube, and everything else is just wave after wave of bullshit "celebrity death" SEO crap sharing basic demographics information gleaned from Yahoo News that ends up clouding out his friends talking about what actually happened.

Probably my least favorite part of the web today.

axoplasm,

@mathowie I have run into all kinds of weird corners (not just web search) that are getting ruined by SEO or adjacent strategies

the world should be a little LESS optimized IMO

My friend Greg wrote a really cool book about software engineering! I spent some time with it, and here's my report.

@emilygorcenski this book is great, thanks for the recommendation & review!

"There’s a lot of books on programming but fewer books that couple software development with effective and practical use of tools, presenting a language not as a main course but as a part of an engineering ecosystem. Greg Wilson’s book hits all the right notes in bringing together theory, pragmatism, and best practices." - Emily Gorcenski writes about "Software Design by Example" in https://emilygorcenski.com/post/book-report-software-design-by-example-by-greg-wilson/; you can read the book at https://third-bit.com/sdxjs/. Thank you @emilygorcenski

Dear LLM stans, we already have a way to write descriptive text to make software applications.

It’s called programming languages and they work a million times better than your bullshit generators.

axoplasm,

@thomasfuchs I recall a scifi story, a post-cyberpunk thing, where bc of AI or systemic complexity “computer programming” had become something like training animals

kind of predictable, kind of replicable, but with a lot of inbuilt chaos

axoplasm,

@thomasfuchs also I am already thees close to getting a particular non-techie product manager/owner to write specs as pseudocode directly in the repo which feels related somehow

Parallel universes are real! You shall be sent to live in one... forever.

You will get a choice between 5 universes that each have a similar collection of languages though technology & culture may be very, possibly hazardously, different.

To make your choice you may request one (1) kind of typical artifact. This will be fetched from each universe, you may compare to make your choice.

Electronics will be disabled. If the artifact doesn't exist... you get nothing.

What do you request?

Question for anyone—what's the first thing to enter your head when you see or think of me?

Hopefully that thing will be positive and will make me feel good to hear! I am having strange negative emotions that I can't attribute to anything, but which I can't shake.

Thank you in advance 💖

Is there a dating website for people who have been literally reclusive for several years and they just wanna lurk before they're forced to "swipe" or whatever

axoplasm,

@est ok this is kind of the opposite of what you want but too sweet not to share. I recently learned a (US based) coworker met their spouse in Colombia as penpals so they could practice learning a language (Spanish & English, respectively). US friend moved to Colombia for 4 years & now Colombian is moving here. Such a sweet story & gave my cynical heart hope that ppl still connect on the net

@est I rebooted for this just now and it reopened all my apps/windows…but not all the stuff I had open AT THE MOMENT I REBOOTED. It was, like, timeshifted a couple hours back.
