Parallel universes are real! You shall be sent to live in one... forever.

You will get a choice between 5 universes that each have a similar collection of languages though technology & culture may be very, possibly hazardously, different.

To make your choice you may request one (1) kind of typical artifact. This will be fetched from each universe, you may compare to make your choice.

Electronics will be disabled. If the artifact doesn't exist... you get nothing.

What do you request?

So that you can choose the right universe there is now a spreadsheet collating most answers see:

@futurebird This was the most fun exercise Iʼve ever encountered in six years of being on Mastodon! Leaning toward A or E myself. When will we learn more?

bigattck,

@futurebird I read everyone responses but couldn’t get universe E. It seems like E is a trap that once picked, the person will be randomly assigned to one of the remaining 4. That’s why I request the chemical composition of the body. This should help us find any dangerous chemicals that humans shouldn’t have and if nothing exists then that universe is not human.

futurebird,
@futurebird@sauropods.win avatar

@bigattck none pose physical dangers of this kind. The differences are mostly about tech and culture.

World E, along with World D, are the ones we would likely find most alien, with approaches to daily life that would require a lot of adjustment.

Curiously, in World E, at least the concept of a Stock Exchange has survived, in much the same way that the notion of a typewriter has survived; but if any exist, the largest one is 'clearly the work of children'. Whereas despite it's technology, World A does not have even that.

This is archaeology, isn't it?

I've gone and cheated now, compiled all the answers in a spreadsheet and listed everything I can conclude about each universe from those answers. (I guess I shouldn't post that because it might be spoiler-y.) On the basis of what I currently know, I'd choose Universe D.

About a high tech civilization “not fixing the inability to walk” when thinking about mobility devices, short of a world with instant healing they are still needed. Even if having your leg cut off is a “grow it back” kind of thing that still takes time. So while I considered having a world with no mobility devices, thinking on it, I decided that only a really barbaric place that kept all sick people hidden would do that. Though I’d love to hear other thoughts on this.

futurebird,
@futurebird@sauropods.win avatar

Also just because a disability can be cured doesn’t mean that the cure is a great fit for everyone. Where practical people ought to be able to choose their medical treatments— so simply having cures isn’t the end of people having different mobility needs. What if regrown limbs never feel… normal or what if you are allergic to the plastic used in the prosthetics? etc

skye,

@futurebird also at some point people just. get old and weak. if a world doesn't have eternal life and youth, no matter how healthy people are for most of their life, at the end they're not going to be

onceitwas,

@futurebird it used to be common practice in the west to keep people with physical disabilities hidden....

futurebird,

@onceitwas Like I said barbaric. And there is still a bit of it around today.

legumancer,

@futurebird I love this. I want to ask for an artifact but I'm having trouble of thinking of any that might convince me not to go to plant world.
