"When vulnerabilities are discovered in obscure bits of open-source technology critical to the functioning of the internet, often there is no entity responsible for fixing the bug."
C'mon Slate, do better.

The issue is hardly that we don't know who's responsible for open source projects. If you are building anything serious on a abandoned FOSS code, you are to blame, not the original authors.

The issue is that large organisations use –and rely on– open source projects without funding them.

@molly0xfff Right, interesting thanks. I'll have to look up why Bitcoin or Eth wouldn't be securities…

You have a choice between two products. Both are within your budget. One has a prestigious brand; the other has good value, that is, quality for the price. Which would you choose?

axx,
@axx@mstdn.fr avatar

@evan It doesn't cover a third dimension, the most important to some of us: the most ethical choice, which can be neither brand nor value for money.

axx,
@axx@mstdn.fr avatar

@evan respectfully Evan, that sounds just a tiny bit disingenuous 🙂. The price of tea or the war are completely orthogonal to the subject of this poll, but another dimension that affects how people consume, sometimes trumping the binary offered, does sound relevant. At least a worthwhile topic for the comments? I was saying this less to criticise the poll and more to explain why some of us would not be able to answer it.

Do you run a Matrix synapse homeserver? The make sure you've upgraded to synapse to at least v1.74.0 (December 2022), or better yet, to the latest 1.84.0! Some security issues that work over federation have been fixed: https://matrix.org/blog/2023/05/24/disclosing-synapse-security-advisories

EU member states want to kill end-to-end encryption and privacy, episode 235:

"Denmark and Ireland expressed support for scanning encrypted messengers for child sexual abuse material while also endorsing the inclusion of wording in the law that protects end-to-end encryption from being weakened"

aka "i'm not interested in the technical details, just make it work peasant."

(and this is the most progressive opinion in that leaked document, it seems)

I never tire of reading about the absolute shipwreck that is Uber.

"Uber also covertly operated the microphones in its drivers' phones to listen for the chimes the Lyft app made: drivers who had both Lyft and Uber installed on their devices were targeted for (strictly temporary) bonuses."

Wonderful. More generally, as @pluralistic puts it Uber "invented algorithmic wage disrimination, an exciting new field of labor-law violations".

WOW I have a lot of feels about this article: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/cedar-the-goats-story-revealed-our-beliefs-about-pets-and-livestock/

I'm not here to debate (very personal) diet choices, I'm just sharing my own story. It's really interesting to read about how those of us who raise meat animals have go through a process "hardening their feelings and navigating the shifting status of their animals" - I haven't put it to words, but that's definitely the process I went through in the last few years

axx,
@axx@mstdn.fr avatar

@rysiek @sundogplanets This whole process and philosophy has been given a name: carnism. It's so enmeshed in most societies (all societies?) that most of us grow up with it, do not see it and actively refuse the idea that there is a lifelong process that disconnects us from the fact other animals are also sentient beings. Hence my first reaction to this: "what? diet choice are very much not personal and completely political!" :ablobcatcoffee:

I have 3 tickets. Let me know.

axx,
@axx@mstdn.fr avatar

axx,
@axx@mstdn.fr avatar

@whilelm @taziden J'ignorais que c'était une option.. Aucune idée si ça existe en France. En Angleterre, tous les virements de grandes banques sont des "virement instantanés". Avec Wise, tous les virement sont rapides / instantanés en tout cas.

More proof that the (somewhat) United Kingdom makes little sense: there is an official coronation quiche https://www.royal.uk/the-coronation-quiche

I'm trying to imagine France having an official presidential potato salad when someone gets elected "to the highest spheres of the State", or Germany heartily sharing a bundeskartoffelsalat for to celebrate a new chancellor.

Mastodon has successfully sold 12 million people on the practical use of decentralization because they see it in action. And they love it.

Bluesky’s biggest fans think decentralization is horseshit—and they’re hostile to it being implemented.

This is a bad omen for Bluesky.

axx,

    @amberage @nileane How is it shady? it's been announced for a long time, has produced publicly available work and is only starting to move to a beta.. Te level of bad faith towards bluesky on the Fediverse is really interesting, there's a lot of "not invented here" going on. The Fediverse is great. Why couldn't the AT protocol also be great, if not better? What's the point: we have ActivityPub and that's it, that's where we stop? Weird.
