Granddad with adult son who is neurodivergent with Downs and shares name with his nephew. Both are treasures. Partner Bob, agrees. Know insurrection when we see it. Woke Again Christian fed up with organized religion exerting control over politics & capitalist system putting profit of rich over health of planet & basic needs of underprivileged Americans. Go legal branch! I listen to new & emerging artists. He/him. Far less serious than the profile paints. #KCRW, #WAPS, #KEXP, #MVYRadio

Saying in jest:
Jim Jordan has never been successful at anything. So hopefully he becomes speaker to break McCarthy’s record for minimal days in office.

Heat pump technology is very efficient. If you plan to stay where you are, it’s worth taking a hard look.

Depending on where you live, a heat pump will work great and with climate change possibly better wherever you’re located..

I love that dirty taco! Oh Oh, Boston, you're my home! The Standells, 1965.

bBuck,

@wx1g
The Standels are worthy, but not my favorite Boston song. I’m in Ohio now, but school years were Malden, Walpole, Stoughton where I learned to love:

Gonna drive by the Stop n’ Shop
With the taco on.

Ta…co on, Ta…co on

They’re both great songs. Is WBCN still broadcasting?

I, a straight person, have a question. I'm talking about homophobia in a draft blog piece, and what’s a good choice of word for the people that homophobes dislike and abuse? Has it got to the point where “queer” is respectful and appropriate? Is “LGBTQ” better? “Gender-diverse”? (I think I’m correct to think that “homophobe” has grown to include anti-trans and gender-related bigotries generally?) Who has written a really good essay on the subject? Thanks in advance.

ProPublica just came out with another amazing piece of journalism, this one on the efforts by the capitalist firm Philips Respironics to hide the harms caused by its products.

Philips makes CPAP ventilator machines designed to be worn while asleep, creating positive air pressure to help people with sleep apnea. Back in 2010, Philips added a foam to its CPAP machines to reduce rattling that kept users awake at night. The foam Philips chose degrades, releasing toxic carcinogens directly into the mouths, throats, and lungs of users.

Philips knew about this right away. It spent years hiding reports that it was legally obligated to share with US governmental regulators. It waited over a decade to issue a recall. Thousands of people are sick; hundreds have died.

Go ahead and read the whole thing, if you have the stomach for it. It’s a typically excellent piece of investigative reporting by ProPublica:

Got the second lottery ticket at the Marathon downtown. It turned out to be a 5 mile walk, 4 dollar lottery investment, 3 stops (added the library to rehydrate), 2 lottery tickets total and hoping for just 1 big win. The raindrops on the trip: countless.

My dad to make sure I made the right decision when I renounced my lifelong passion of Alabama football when the SEC started chanting “F” Biden during the football games. The Dark Brandon meme resulted from this event. So I’m pretty sure I did. But it would be worth a chat with dad.

It took a good chunk of the day, but we had extra tomato paste so made a batch of tomato sauce. The farm store is across the street from the airport on top of the western ridge.

It was a beautiful walk today. The clouds were amazing becoming more dense as the walk went on. It was completely cloudy when I got back home.

View over the valley and getting cloudier.
Farmland as far as the eye can see under mostly cloudy skies.

I warned Bob I’ll be grumpy, sore old man today. I just completed what is now an aspirational 7-mile walk down the valley, across the valley and up the other side, back along the ridge and downhill to home. It was my first time crossing the new traffic circle on a weekday which, as I learned, was not constructed with pedestrians in mind.

A few more pics from the walk in Akron. It’s hard to believe downtown Akron is less than a mile to the left. Cuyahoga Valley National Park is to the right. The river heads to the right towards Lake Erie about 35 miles north.

View of the treetops with one orange tree changing color early
Sam taking a turn in the woods towards the river.
Another view west across wildflowers toward the river.
