After working with triangle meshes for so long, moving up to volumetric tetrahedral meshes can be tricky. For instance, there’s a lot of convenience in having an edge adjacent to at most 2 triangles. In a tet, a face is adjacent to 2 tets but an edge can be adjacent to an arbitrary number of faces.

Alan Hugh Schoen

25 January 2024
(11 December 1924 – 26 July 2023)
The geometry-enamored condensed matter physicist discovered the gyroid.

Stephen T. Hyde and Gerd E Schroeder-Turk.

“Schoen is celebrated for his 1968–70 discovery of the gyroid, an infinite periodic minimal “soap film” surface (IPMS). Its intrinsic beauty—carving space into a pair of enantiomeric labyrinths—is more than a geometric jewel.”

Years ago when I used to fly around on business, I flew on Air France and the wine glass had such a cool logo that I was obliged to steal it.
Ever since I've wondered, wtf, and today I learned.

bathsheba,
@bathsheba@mathstodon.xyz avatar

From 1932 to 1976 Air France's logo was the Hippocampe ailé, or winged horse sea monster. (Now of course it is a miserably generic sans serif wordmark.)

original version

bathsheba,
@bathsheba@mathstodon.xyz avatar

This logo is known colloquially as the crevette, or shrimp.

bathsheba,
@bathsheba@mathstodon.xyz avatar

The logo on my glass is clearly the same beast, with the fox-tail thing being a wing, or maybe one hump of its tail. But the design is completely different and where did that come from?

bathsheba,
@bathsheba@mathstodon.xyz avatar

Jean Picart le Doux designed it in the 1960's, for the china used by first-class passengers on the Concorde.
It was manufactured by Limoges, it remained in use into the 1970's, and you can still find some on Ebay.

bathsheba,
@bathsheba@mathstodon.xyz avatar

Going further down the china rathole, even closer to the design on my tiny glass is this tiny (7cm) dish made by Gien.
Here my search ends, for I have bought one on ebay for $14.05, in the least coveted and therefore cheapest gray color. No date of manufacture is given.

bathsheba,
@bathsheba@mathstodon.xyz avatar

La crevette may still appear as part of the Air France brand identity, though never the main logo.
And I'll leave this thread with this daring Deco departure, which was also an official version for ten years starting in 2009.
Vive l'hippocampe!

Do any native English speakers pronounce "asked" in ways other than "ast" and "axed”?

I never realized I've been pronouncing it "ast" my whole life until I took some voice lessons recently and really paid attention to how I pronounced everyday words. But if I try to pronounce every letter in "asked", it feels super-weird.

@jmac my mom was British and she taught me to say every consonant. (I learned American English later.) ((I also eat fork on the left.))

I'm the devil so I'll be the devil's advocate: because I put down $x00000 and went $y00000 in debt to get this 2-family house, and my tenants didn't.
After 10 years the total rent I've received is less than half the purchase price of the house. Meanwhile I've done $z00000 worth of repairs and upgrades, which both I and the tenants benefited from, but only I paid for. All rent I receive goes toward upkeep, I've never taken cash out. I sometimes put cash in. I get a place to live and that's all. If I had instead used the purchase money to rent this apartment, in cash I'd be ahead.
Yes, I have equity now. I paid and sweated and risked my financial life for it. I rent to people in the same socioeconomic class as myself, who made different choices.
Yes, the rent is too damn high. Yes, when the revolution comes it's coming for me. Yes, I want the revolution. Yet I personally am not ashamed, and also I don't, here and now, feel obligated to give half this house to my tenants.

People on tumblr are so strange.

Do you want to know what my most popular post is over there? Is it a short story? A cool ant facts rundown? Is it some political issue thing?

No-- it's a "note to self" I posted about the world-building in my "Planet Myrmecos" series outlining how "Traditional Ant Names" work in the story. (super personal and obscure) People are over there giving each other ant names now like a colony and it's been going on for days. Don't understand... but, I'll take it.

IDK if I’m getting old or just impatient but I when see a password box that does ⚫️⚫️⚫️⚫️⚫️ with no option to see what you are typing I think the company is incredibly inconsiderate!

You want me to conform my password to 30 annoying rules “must have a special character but not at the beginning or end” I’m using a damn touchscreen and now I can’t see what I’m typing. (This is why everyone hates passwords. )

I’m not convinced ⚫️⚫️⚫️⚫️⚫️ makes it more secure anyway— is there any evidence?

bathsheba,
@bathsheba@mathstodon.xyz avatar

What torques me is apps that don't keep me logged in. Passwords are something my browser handles, and if you force me out of that onto your app then you'd better keep me logged in till kingdom come, because I did not and never will write that down or look it up.

Bangor has grown a bewildering number of pot shops recently. I cannot say with confidence that it has more coffee shops than dispensaries. Sit in any Bangor Dunkin’s and look out the window, and I’d wager that you can see two shops with 🪴 signs.

What a change from when I lived there, when there were just one or two winking “pipe shops” downtown!
