Hey, ... this is a real part of the - sub-standard housing - tinkering with deposits to stoke house price will do nothing to address this problem...

We have a lot of rubbish housing that people (often renters) are being forced to live in, while you & your refuse to improve r maintain dwellings properly.

What we need is an enforceable landlords' duty to maintain alongside a better insulation scheme for owners.

Why in fuck''s name would I wish to have an if all I'm doing is swapping one bunch of evil corrupt tories in for a corrupt bunch of / , & tories in ?

I want a genuinely green socialist , not a co-opted same-as-it-ever-was under new management.

are (again) at record levels (according to Rightmove, at least) but interestingly around a quarter of all rental contracts are then concluded at a discount to the advertised rate....

This might be 'realism' by or suggest in some cases the rents advertised are not achievable - there are no renters prepared to pay these astronomical rents.

Given discounted rents have grown fro 16% - 23% in a year, may suggest driven rent is peaking?

@HopelessDemigod Yeah...

Only The City-State of [] made "purposeful vacancy" illegal and seizes vacant property, fixes them up and rents them out and will only return ownership to the that neglected them after the landlord paid all the fees, fines and costs of renovations.

Also said apartments are then only offered in a rent-controlled fashion...

Something every city should do!

the new normal that should have arised from the current covid was a fully populus, masks as common usage, huge amounts of industry restructured for remote , single payer , elimination of the class and massive awareness

but the minute we approached any of that screeched on the brakes. this state will never be out for your interests.

How do the ensure the poor are further impoverished?

One simple mechanism: freeze local housing Allowance (benefit) rates.

The squeeze is on & of course, when you wonder about the implications, along with the pain it causes poor households, it also acts to transfer the nation's income from & the vulnerable to the class... yup, more Tory !

Wealthy who enriches himself on the labour of others criticises workers (during a cost of living crisis & housing affordability crisis) for wanting to save money.

Why is this news? Why hasn't the journalist asked some obvious questions to provide a little context for this bear-defecates-in-woods story?

  • how much does gain from leeching off the labour of their myriad tenants?
  • how much unpaid overtime and other forms of wage theft is facilitated by working from an office?
  • are workers more likely to fail to complete their contractual work while working from home, or is this "they don't work as hard" merely a euphemism for the extraction of unpaid extra work?
  • how much has the pandemic further shifted power away from workers and towards plutocrats?
  • what do the tenants from whom Blackstone extracts its billions think of working from home?
  • to what extent is Blackstone a significant contributor to the very housing/cost of living crises that are making the financial situation of workers ever more precarious?
