It’s a great street, don’t get me wrong, but I’m sure there are plenty of better streets in the world, especially if they’re less of a car distopia.

This. This is so spot on. I could rant for days about the damage Thatcher & Reagan did to the world. People think Obama and the orange guy were consequential presidents - they weren't. They didn't really do anything much. We're still living in a Reagan/Thatcher world!

In fact you could argue that the failure of Obama to do anything much about the damage neoliberalism caused is a massive failure on his part. (Along with his many foreign policy blunders)

As I've been looking at new cars recently, I've been really impressed with some of the designs. Car companies are finally doing some nice stuff! (After decades of stagnation) All in the EV space of course, some with a great retrofuturistic vibe.

Look at the Rivian R3, it's just wonderful! I could not love this more.

(I'll post photos of my new car when I pick it up on Thursday - it's not this one 😀)

So many work weeks end with unfinished work bugging you and playing on your mind for the weekend.

Not this week! Friday afternoon we found the solution to a really gnarly, intermittent, bug that has been annoying everyone for a couple of weeks.

Every week, I get my trimmer to cut my “hair” down from a few millimeters to ~0.5mm. And every time I’m done I ask my girlfriend “aren’t you going to say something?”. And she’s like “ugh, what?” and I tell her that I cut my hair. And that it “would be nice if you noticed some time”. And I’m pretty sure I’ll keep on doing this joke until one of us die, or she leaves me, whichever comes first.

I’m still amazed that, in a 30+ degrees day, I can cool most of my house at absolutely no cost & zero emissions. Solar panels are wonderful.

@jinahadam @nesevis I just typed me usage details in to OVO and estimated $2,400/year. My current deal with Tango is about $1,600/year.

They make it SO deliberately confusing to compare though.

A few times I have told the anecdote that the singly most baffling thing I ever saw in a code review — not the most insecure, just the most “how could a real programmer have written this? how could this ever make sense?” thing — was simply a C++ variable “number_of_trucks” … declared as float. Unambiguously referring to real physical trucks in a fleet.

Reader, it’s been over ten years and I am blowing the gods damn whistle. I had edited that story to protect the guilty: the variable was named number_of_planes. It was shipped by a company whose name begins with “B” and rhymes with “GOING out of business.”

@0xabad1dea I worked at a large investment bank years ago where all currencies were stored as floats EXCEPT GBP which was store as Ints in pence. (Yes, even Yen that has no fractional value).

Of course, on occasion, some programmer would forget to * or / by 100 to get GBP and all hell would break loose 😂

It rhymed with Reddit and a European Alpine country with a square flag who DID go bust 😂

Ooooh, they're making a series based on the movie The Gentlemen. Great movie. But a lot of its power comes from the performances of many amazing actors, hopefully they can carry that on in a series.

It's on Netflix though so it's sure to get cancelled just as it gets good.

@simonbs It's easy to say "ignore the haters", but you can't, it's human nature to worry about these things. Focus on the positive reviews though if you can. I'm going to leave a review now (should have previously) even though I hardly ever use the app 😀 But when I do, it's really good - does what I need! 👏

I started watching a movie last night that I'd like to finish tonight - can't remember on which app though.

Honestly think I'll just go back to 🏴‍☠️ everything.
