Shout-out to NameCheap. I had two domains expire that I didn't realize (because I had auto-renewal on and a credit card attached but it turns out the credit card wasn't checked "use for renewals”) and I thought I had gone into the redemption period where you have to pay $90 to get them back, which fine, it's my fault. but I contacted support and they were able to renew them for me at the list price. A++

@film_girl Saw a tip on the DeadBirdSite to deal with those guys many years ago, very glad I did. It's been easy to keep up every domain.

It should be super simple:

Billionaires should start paying their fair part of taxes

benfrog,

@stux Oh, c'mon. Next you'll want the US to start taxing huge companies. 😜

I periodically find myself looking at old Pixelbooks on eBay. WaPo’s tech writer has good taste.

@ernie This Pixelbook (which I think I've bragged about before) is amazing. Best thing I've ever bought.

Searching for a instance to cross post the Minimum Competence news to — any suggestions folks?

We cross post to and I generally feel yucky about it. Would love to transition away or, at the very least, give folks a option for listening/watching.

@bryanhansel Real question--what is/was the union situation like at the copper-sulfide mining company? I've heard a ton about the iron/steel mining company from the Steel Worker's Union (great job on their part).

okay, that's enough, we need to put a limit on names in the tech industry. if you're named sam and you're hoping to become a prominent figure in tech, please pick something else. mar(c/k)s, you're on notice too.

The first two episodes of the new "Frasier" arrived on Paramount on Oct. 12 to mixed reviews — IndieWire says it's "decent by revival standards, but suffers by comparison." The magazine's team takes a look at the show's heyday in this @Flipboard Storyboard, from why the apartment is one of the all-time greatest sitcom sets, to the gay sensibility of the show. Will you be watching, and if you've already seen it, what do you think?

Benedict Evans' newsletter: "If you follow a lot of car accounts on Instagram, Instagram will show you car ads. A small number of people have persuaded themselves that this violates your human rights and threatens democracy, & persuaded an EU court that explicit consent is needed for this."

benfrog,
@benfrog@mstdn.social avatar

@jeffjarvis
That may be one of the dumbest things I've ever read. (That reflects a total lack of understanding of how much personal data needs to be stored, in how many places, and how dangerous storage of that data is, to personalize ads).

    A well-known URI defining params around which paths of your site opt-in to how they are used. The server uses this to decide how to serve the content, and the requestor must include a request header indicating how it intends to use the content.

    Browsers, bots, etc. would have to include the header with appropriate value for their use. Server would decline access by default to requests not including the header, but you could set up the well-known URI to allow access.

    Could it work?

    benfrog,
    @benfrog@mstdn.social avatar

    @ramsey
    Just thinking about this quickly, it seems feasible using most servers and some code. Those kind-of-creds could go literally anywhere on the server-side (a good example of how to store them would be Lua or another scripting language under nginx--it does DB's like MySQL), then be pulled by any other language. Just abstract concepts here.

    benfrog,
    @benfrog@mstdn.social avatar

    @ramsey
    Good point. I've worked with Lua doing auth work in the past under nginx (and passing some information over to PHP), but there are likely a ton of other solutions.
