Speedrunning is kinda cursed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEQWT9rSkfM

Did you know this? Apparently if you bought a copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 in the US, depending on when you bought it the "bros" in the logo is either aligned left on the label or right.

If the logo on your cart is aligned right, you can't get a world record under current strategies.

And until last year, nobody realized this was a problem. It was believed the versions were functionally identical.

Thinking about getting a KVM for when I get my expensive hardware dongle (Mac Mini) so I can compile iOS apps.

Some of the reviews on the KVMs I'm seeing warn about not having something called "EDID" and this potentially disrupting audio, desktop icons etc. Very few of the KVMs advertise either EDID or its absence. Does anyone know what this is about? Is "EDID" ever present on inexpensive KVMs?

bk1e,
@bk1e@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc Related: keyboard/mouse emulation enables switching inputs with a keyboard hotkey, but it can also cause problems.

My Kinesis ergonomic keyboard doesn’t work with keyboard emulation. My workaround is to connect it to the KVM’s mouse/aux USB port and use physical buttons to switch inputs.

Some KVMs (Monoprice Blackbird) also switch inputs based on mouse position. There are a lot of negative reviews about this. Aux USB port helps here too.

I hardly ever watch the same movie more than once or read the same book over again. I've always been like this. I can remember text, going through it again seems pointless. This isn't about "spoilers" (I don't even believe in the concept of spoilers) it's more that once I know a story I can tell it to myself all that I want. I don't need to see it again.

But music is different. Music gets better the more you return to it. So, the Fantasia movies are among the few I've watched multiple times.

bk1e,
@bk1e@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird Have you seen Koyaanisqatsi? Live action, no story, lots of time lapse, set to music by Philip Glass.

For a few months in 2020, I listened to the Koyaanisqatsi soundtrack every day, but then I suddenly realized that I could play the Koyaanisqatsi DVD every day instead, so I did that. Somehow, it had never occurred to me that you can watch the same movie every day if you choose.

Today I learned that "PYREX" (all upper case) is borosilicate glass that can handle thermal shock, and "pyrex" (lower case) is cheap sublicensed stuff that capitalismed away all the merit in the product.

The upper case version is apparently still sold in europe. I wonder why?

Okay here's a Windows question

Is there a way to monitor temperatures in my system in general?

I have a program called CoreTemp. It gets CPU temp only.

If I want my GPU temp, I have to go into this nasty Nvidia alt-z overlay.

My PSU's software can't get the PSU temp, but CAN get… RAM temp? Somehow.

What I really want to know is the temp of my M.2 SSD. These instructions https://www.easeus.com/partition-master/m-2-temperature-monitor.html#:~:text=2%20SSD%20temperature%2C%20go%20to,Properties%20to%20see%20the%20temperature. explain how to get that in Windows… referring to a nonexistent button in Windows Settings.

bk1e,
@bk1e@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc I’ve used CPUID HWMonitor to check SSD temperature. I’m sure it does CPU and GPU temperature as well. Not sure about power supplies.

bk1e,
@bk1e@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc CrystalDiskInfo also does SSD temperature, plus S.M.A.R.T. reporting.

Win10 is finally getting inbox support for S.M.A.R.T. reporting with SSDs, but it’s only in insider preview builds at this point.

bk1e,
@bk1e@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc I find it astonishing that the ATX power supply connector doesn’t have an I2C bus.

Apparently some PC power supplies have a USB port for monitoring: https://www.corsair.com/us/en/p/psu/cp-9020037-na/ax860i-digital-atx-power-supply-860-watt-80-plus-platinum-certified-fully-modular-psu-cp-9020037-na

So here's the fun thing about the PVM (PWK Virtual Machine) used by Wheel of Fortune (2010, Wii) and a bunch of other spigot games:
It's a stack-based VM (a stack machine), but it's not a simple one. It's a typed stack, as it's built of an array PVariable* which is a base class with a bunch of subclasses. So you get polymorphism with your stack.

My computer monitor seems to be haunted again.

It still puzzles me how Apple Silicon Macs can confuse an external monitor so badly that it displays image retention and vertical pinstripes for half an hour after you unplug all input sources and power cycle the monitor.
