strip away the "AI" branding and the new google thing is

"we take search results and decontextualize them by putting them in an unsourced blob of text"

turns out that's worse than being sent to a website where you can see the context of the original thing (a joke site, an SEO spam blog, some reddit guy, &c.)

Heads up to anyone using facebook or insta: you'll receive a notification about your data being used to train AIs. The opt out process is deliberately convoluted and you have to fill out a form to object. This is what I wrote in mine, and the objection was immediately registered as successful, so feel free to copy.

Masto reply bores, this is not a post on which to fart out your opinions about Meta or AI or whatever. So don't. I'm sharing helpful info for people who need it, not for you.

What's wild about this is that it sounds similar to the thing Microsoft just announced and is putting in all Windows computers.

Trump has said FOUR times that he will withhold federal funding from schools that require vaccines. Not just COVID. ALL.

This is most schools. This is hitting me where I work. This will lead to children dead from measles. It's obvious, inevitable.

Someone on here said they just couldn't bear to vote for Biden to keep Trump from office since at least under Trump there were better masking rules.

I hope that person sees this.

Worse is worse.

edit: because I don't know measles from smallpox

How to tell your OSS is ridiculously popular: people aren't 100% sure they didn't embed it, and tack on the software equivalent of "packaged in a facility where peanuts were also present" to the license list.

This watch contains software, so statistically probably contains at least traces of curl.

Texas made the wrong decision on toll roads

Lawmakers turned to toll roads to boost the TX economy & address population growth without raising taxes, but the consequences spiraled.

Some state leaders rightly regret the policies & laws that drove the toll road construction boom. “We were sold a bill of goods. We were just looking for how to find money. We now know that this was the wrong way to do it.”

While the Texas GOP’s ongoing destruction of public education may seem ideological, it’s worth looking past the culture war smokescreen. It’s simpler than that. The people doing it are pouring state money into their own pockets.

It’s just crime.
