We don't spend enough time talking about the quality of water for your coffee and espresso at CoffeeGeek; it's my fault, because a) we have really good water in Victoria for coffee straight from the tap, and b) I have an under-the-sink commercial water filtration kit for coffee.

Well, I'm changing that. We're going to be reviewing water filtration kits designed for coffee soon. First up is BWT's innovative kits. Like this retro-grade kit for espresso machine reservoirs.

  • I want to perform a task
  • Oh no, I need to learn how to use this web api
  • Oh, there is a Python script on Github that calls the API for me
  • Oh no, now I need to learn how to use a new Python package manager
bk1e,
@bk1e@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc Poetry uses custom extensions to the pyproject.toml format that aren't used by other tools like PDM. If you are installing the API-wrapping project in another project's venv as @SnoopJ described, then this is abstracted away by the [build-system] section. However, if you want to develop the API-wrapping project (or deploy it using the same tools you would use to develop it), you must use the tool that is listed in its pyproject.toml.

There's a lot of room for improvement here :(

bk1e,
@bk1e@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc Create a venv somewhere else and run pip install path/to/api-wrapper-repo/ (or whatever dir contains the pyproject.toml). That should use the [build-system] section to install it into your venv.

bk1e,
@bk1e@mastodon.social avatar

@SnoopJ @mcc Great point, I always forget about pipx.

I just tried pipx install C:\local\path\to\poetry\project on a project that I work on and it worked.

However, pipx install https: //github.com/path/to/poetry/project (without the space after https:) did not work. It failed with “ERROR: Cannot unpack file... ; cannot detect archive format”

This week we are promised a "Shape"

In is there a standard for custom commands? (development scripts/tasks)

Like scripts in package.json with JavaScript or Makefile targets, or custom commands in rust (and alias in rust). For development tasks like format, test, make check... and custom dev scripts.

In python with setup.py you could define custom commands. But now?

Doesn't seem to be a standard for this, just a bunch of separate tools. But I would love to know if I'm missing something for custom commands/scripts.

@renedudfield “poethepoet” is another tool for running development-time tasks.

A fun side effect of being anosmic is that sometimes I think I smell something, but it's just the nasal equivalent of phantom limb.
The best part about this is that because the smells I'm supposedly smelling aren't real, my brain doesn't seem to think they should be limited to things that would make sense to smell; you know, physical objects with distinct odors.

I just smelled slackware.

@SnoopJ Reminds me of outputting color bars from my Amiga and viewing them on my dad’s oscilloscope, back in the ‘90s.

I did an image search for a color bar waveform and apparently the SMPTE color bars are defined in YPbPr, not RGB.

I have literally implemented SRP at both the client and server side but I am still unable to figure out, if I were to purchase or set up a "Passkey", what exactly I would have, or how it would work, or which computers, web browsers or web sites I should expect it to work with

bk1e,
@bk1e@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc I’m not exactly sure what a “passkey” is either but I’m pretty sure more web browsers and web sites support passkeys than TLS-SRP 😅

It is disappointing that TypedDict doesn't support setting default values.

from typing import TypedDict

class Con(TypedDict):
 host: str
 port: int = 9090

data = {"host": "test.com"}
connection = Con(**data)

I expected it to give me "port": 9090 by default but it does not!

Looks like building the dict as instance of Con doesn't make any difference than just building a {} and that is very confusing.

bk1e,
@bk1e@mastodon.social avatar

@diazona @rochacbruno @cpontvieux @nedbat Not sure if you noticed but mypy returns the same error for the original non-dataclass snippet.
