RIP Steve Albini. I never got into his music, but he sound engineered great albums from bands I love, like Pixies, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Mono, Low, and Flogging Molly.

bk1e,
@bk1e@mastodon.social avatar

Huh, he also engineered Mogwai’s “My Father My King” single. I was going to ask “how have I not heard this song?” But apparently they closed their 2019 set at Emo’s Austin with it, and I never looked up what it was until now.

Can you answer this simple question about the C programming language?

$ cat test.c
<string.h>
<stdio.h>
int main() { printf("%d\n", strlen("\x01c")); }
$ cc test.c && ./a.out

What number does this program print?

bk1e,
@bk1e@mastodon.social avatar

@whitequark Shoutout to GoogleTest’s string printing code for handling this case. It prints an extra “ “ like “\x6B” “ANANAS”, in case you want to copy/paste the output into your code.

@gregpak I’m fascinated by the non-retrofocus version of that lens, the one that protruded so far into the camera, you had to use mirror lockup in order to mount it. 🤯

I am now working on my own chess API and it’s actually pretty fun. I learned that using bitboards is apparently very efficient. So I now use 8 64bit bitboards, 2 for the color and 6 for the pieces (I thought about just using 7 because you COULD theoretically represent the colors in one bitboard, but using 2 makes it faster at the expense of an extra 64 bit, which is neglegible). Gonna continue on this in the upcoming days :3

bk1e,
@bk1e@mastodon.social avatar

@claras_universe Neat. This reminds me of the Amiga’s bitplane graphics. 16-color mode used 4 bits per pixel, slicing each of the 4 bits into a separate 1-bit bitplane. This format is probably slower for representing chess pieces, though.

We see a lot of criticism online for . Some warranted, some not. But we cannot deny they have been incredibly influential. They kickstarted EVs and now we starting to see their radical design language kickstart trends that span industries. It’s really cool.

For instance, I was at a public park the other day and saw this:

@kirsch Haha, that term was “coined” by one of Dave Barry’s readers back in 2003: https://web.archive.org/web/20031029212146/http://home.earthlink.net/~sendmyfriend/iu.htm

Okay, so, podcasts are great but sometimes I prefer to read instead of listen. 🤔

So what if – hear me out – there was a thing like podcasts, but for text! 🤯

It would still be distributed via RSS, you could still follow them and automagically pull them to your device. But instead of audio, there would be text. ✏️

👉 We could call them: textcasts!

And get this: I already have one! It was super easy to set up, actually. You can find it here:

@gregpak Still cheaper than the earlier, concave 35mm f/2. And almost 100% less radioactive.

This dial is just stunning. Bloody love it.

Playing with the 105mm f2.8 Macro lens I picked up by shooting a watch of mine.

bk1e,
@bk1e@mastodon.social avatar

@brunty Nice. The trident second hand is an interesting detail. I think it’s more visible in your photo than in many of the manufacturer’s product photos, which position the second hand at about the 35 mark, often overlapping the trident and the minute hand.

@bk1e Note to self: the 70-210's "macro" capability is apparently at the 70mm end, not the 210mm end.

bk1e,
@bk1e@mastodon.social avatar

@bk1e Aha, the zoom/focus mechanism lets you turn the focus ring farther when zoom is at 70mm. And the focus mechanism seems to have a little extra resistance to keep you from doing this by accident and getting the lens stuck at 70mm.

Every blue LED is too bright

bk1e,
@bk1e@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc I have an air purifier with a white LED that is bright enough to cast a circle on the ceiling, and when I called the manufacturer (Blueair), they sent me a decal (in the mail!) to stick on the power button and dim the LED.

Target trying to make 8-packs (in place of 12-packs) a thing seems like a naked ploy to get people into Target more often.

I see what you're doing and I HATE IT.

bk1e,
@bk1e@mastodon.social avatar

@stefthepef I always thought it was “shrinkflation”, but it looks like Waterloo sparkling water is cheaper per can at Target than at H-E-B ($0.54/can in 8-can packs vs. $0.60/can in 12-can packs).
